Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If given the choice, would you choose to leave the Matrix, or stay in the Matrix?

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Stay, I guess. The world outside was too awful.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This assumes one's been made aware of the Matrix?

Hmmm. Not sure. On the one hand, I'd want to help people. On the other hand, in the Matrix context, I don't think I'd be much good to anyone out of the Matrix. So probably stay.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to say I'd leave, because truth and reality and all.

But then again, I've been guilty of spending like 14 hours straight playing MMORPGs so history's not for me on this one.

Stay. Outside of the Matrix seems like a horrible, hopeless place.

Re: Important Question

[personal profile] malurette 2019-06-16 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'd have to leave. I'd rather never know and stay in the Matrix in ignorance, but once that knowledge is forced and a choice must be done, the responsible thing would do to leave and try to make the better of the outside world. But I would hate it all the way.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I think if the Matrix were real, I would be a resource drain if I left it, because I’m not particularly good at any of the skills that would make a good guerrilla fighter. I could maybe grow food?

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd choose to stay, but I'd definitely want to know what the situation really was. If I had to choose between living ignorantly in the Matrix or leaving the Matix, I'd probably choose to leave, even though it would majorly suck.

Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So I know we've had a lot of discussion here in the past about commenting, if there's such a thing as a bad comment that's not actually rude, comments vs kudos, etc.
But I wanted to ask for the comm's feelings on creator responses. How much does it matter to you if a creator responds to your comment? Are you happy to engage a little more, or do you suspect they're just inflating their comment numbers? Have you ever had a bad reaction to a comment? Or one that made you particularly happy?

When has Fandom Helped you in Real Life

[personal profile] ill_omened 2019-06-16 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
At work I was shown a new programme to convert CCTV and Video files that nobody really knows how to use, but is key for sorting a compilation into a playable format.

Turns out it's the exact same programme I use to convert all my anime into a playable format for my TV. Having struggled with all kind of bizarre and finicky formats from rips of shows from the eighties, I'm quite adept with it.

Explaining to my boss why I'm so conversant with it, and that I could run the office through how to use it was quite the challenge.

Job Woes... well... more like thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently had a job interview. It went… not well. At least in my eyes.

But that’s not what this post is about. It happens!

I actually got an offer for a seasonal job from someone I worked with before, so I accepted it because I figure the other job is a bust so, may as well work for a few months, yeah? Plus, I find the work fun.

But now I have this paranoia of… ‘what if I get that other job?’

I mean… it’s a full time job with benefits, of course I would take it!

I would just… feel really bad about bailing on the other one I accepted lol. Especially since it’s seasonal so it would be even more inconvenient to bail last minute.

I’m too sentimental for this cutthroat world, Fandom Secrets!

Anyone else feel like this when it comes to jobs? I know I gotta do what I gotta do and I know they'd understand, but my soft heart...

AND I posted in the wrong spot! Now I feel bad about that!

If you get the other offer, you take it. That's business, and that's life. No employer could blame you for taking a full-time position with benefits when they've only offered you seasonal work. Even if that weren't the case, you don't really owe any company your undying loyalty. It's good to maintain positive business relationships, definitely - if you can, still offer two weeks' notice so they can accommodate the transition. But they can't really except more than that. In the end, you have to do what's best for your career, end of story.

I think a good question to ask is, "If the situations were reversed, what would the company do?" Managers may be sympathetic on a personal level, but at the end of the day, in modern America, if leaving a worker in the lurch or screwing them over is in the best interests of the company, the company will almost always do so.

So for me, personally, while I'm personally sympathetic to the individual people I work with, it's hard for me to feel loyalty to a company writ large, when such loyalty is generally totally non-reciprocal.

Well, yeah. I mean, unless the 'seasonal' type job really sucks/is taken out of desperation, most people would feel bad just ditching one for the other.

No, wait.

Going by what my bff says about the people who've been hired at her work, and how they show up late, don't show up, quit with no notice, etc.....

I'd say that people who actually feel bad are few and far between. And it's good you have a conscience. But go for full time + bennies, that's what's best.

If the full-time place does offer you a job, ask when they'd want you to start. Unless the answer is "immediately" (and tbh if they were that desperate they should have hired you sooner!) then tell them that you'd taken a short-term gig at another place, and would want to give the place you're leaving 2 weeks' notice.

As well as being considerate to the seasonal place, this will also establish to the full-time place (assuming they care) that you aren't a flake.

I'm the womb-to-tomb type of employee. I want to be at a place and help it grow and thrive and function and be a part of a thing for decades. I REALLY freaking love community in a job. It gets my rocks off. And I know that workplaces don't view employees as a long-term investment anymore, but I can't stop feeling like I'm betraying someone by looking for a better place.
