I like Dean/Castiel and hate Sam/Ruby in fanfic mainly because I only really read slash and I'm not a big fan of Ruby the character anyway. However, I don't think most of the people who argue against Sam/Ruby because of the rape issue have a problem with it being done in fanfic. I think the arguments here come into play more because there's the question of whether it's happened in CANON which I think, despite many wanting to see some m/m action in canon, would also object to canon Dean/Castiel because of the rape issue (not that it'd ever happen anyway because I doubt TPTB would give us canon gayness for Dean or Sam but the Ruby issue is scarily more of a possibility that they'd do). So yeah, I think it's the canon vs. fanfic thing here because there's just some things that people, including me, are more comfortable with seeing in fanfic than it happening in canon.
