I can see it.

While it's true that it does try to promote equality and has socialist ideal, it also has a militaristic bent and an imperialistic streak (even when the narrative sometimes says it's wrong - characters are alternately shamed or lauded for it).

Those elements are definitely there but even though it's a very American and liberal and mid-century vision of utopia, it's still not really compatible with conservatism, I don't think. You really have to ignore a lot.

I feel like a lot of "conservative" Trek fans are libertarian meritocracy wonks who think that any problem can be solved by the right clever man, and classic Trek strongly supports the narrative that Kirk just knows better and should be allowed to do it.

So the post-scarcity aspects of Trek are because clever men made scarcity obsolete ("a rising tide lifts all boats") not because the Federation is a welfare state. And libertarians think of themselves as the clever men.

The Heinleinites, you might say.

AYRT: Exactly. Personally, I find myself increasingly in the cyberpunk future.

The socialism in Star Trek wasn't done by wealth redistribution, it was accomplished by technology that provided for all. Also they must have done away with corporatism- which the left today fantastically fails to address.

How imperialist? I only watched TNG but they were very strict about non-interference. They even called it "the prime directive". And iirc the Federation weren't militaristic. The Klingons were, but that aspect of them was typically framed as being an inappropriate way to handle most conflicts.

I once saw an interview with a wealthy businessman. He hated Star Trek, because he thought the greatest question in the history of mankind was how to distribute resources, and matter replicators are an easy way out of having to answer it. The folks in the comments section thought that was an incredibly dumb take, but I didn’t think it was that bad.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It is true that Star Trek is post-scarcity but I do think that it is a stupid take to say that post-scarcity stories are inherently uninteresting

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Not that it makes the show uninteresting, but that it takes the easy way out with it's history. Many problems in our world are due to inequalities, particularly in resources. Replicators are not a realitic or feasible strategy for remedying these issues. It's like waving a magic wand to fix your problems. It does the show a disservice to depict a utopia that can only be obtained through a magic device that make almost anything, rather than showing it obtained realistically through hard work and proper strategy.

Remember when Paul Ryan said Rage Against the Machine were his favorite band?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Also when conservatives pick songs to use at their rallies, and it's clear they've never actually listened to the lyrics (like Springsteen's Born In The USA).

Also, Mellencamp, The Pretenders, and Depeche Mode.

Honestly given how much this series preaches about acceptance and loving everyone there, and challenges bigotry, are so many racist fuckwits in all sides of the fandom. Sadly some people really don't absorb the messages of the media they love despite the creator's best attempts.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I was thinking about this secret, and I personally can't think of a single conservative I've ever known who liked Star Trek. All those I've talked to about it called it a socialist fantasy. How strange, lol!

My dad's one. But he's growing less conservative by the day. He's never gonna be a socialist, though. He grew up on the original series. He's the one who got me into scifi in the first place. A lot of his conservative friends are into it too.

My parents were both super conservative but liked Star Trek. I remember seeing Wrath of Khan with them in the theaters, and I know we watched a couple of the movies on television. My mother has ended up becoming less conservative as she has grown. I'm not sure how my father reconciled his enjoyment of tons of sci-fi and fantasy with being as conservative as he was or if he would have become more liberal as he aged like my mom.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
My dad is a huge Trek fan. He also reads Drudge report and sends me links from some place called red state.

So, yeah...

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
My uncle's Jehovah's Witness and politically conservative, he adores Star Trek (and Star Wars.) He's not super bright, tho, so I doubt he'd pick up on the politics of it.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, that's easy. Very few conservatives see themselves as the enemy of progress and the kind of utopian goals reflected in Star Trek. Very few of them even grasp what socialism is.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I think you put 90% of conservatives in a post scarcity society, most of them will be fine with getting free shit without having to work for it.

That was me, btw. Forgot to sign in.

Popping back in to point out that it is not totally money free, either, Latinum cannot be replicated and has become a currency all of it's own.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-23 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they still trick natives out of their gold (dilithium) for trash and trinkets, so I guess it's close enough to be American still?
