Um... just curious, but wouldn't Ruby's initial act of possession be nonconsensual, therefore being something akin to r*pe but much deeper (we certainly have been given no reason to suspect the host consented) while Castiel's host pretty much gave consent to anything and everything that God would want him to do? I'm guessing if you have invited an angelic presence to possess your body, you're probably not going to question anything it does. Granted, if a fic involved Castiel falling from angel-hood, the question of consent would certainly get dicey, but in general I think many in fandom consider the situation different because of the initial consent to possession issue. Like the someone kidnapped and brought to a BDSM dungeon against their will vs. someone who sought it out and refused a safe-word.

I see your point. (Not OP, just shares the opinion)
I know that personally, my strong feelings on it are partially reactionary. When I think about it, I don't find issue with the pairing if a fic author/shipper addresses exactly what you're saying (the safe-word refusal vs. kidnapped is a good analogy) either directly or in an implied way. What has gotten me riled, however, is how many fans don't even seem to consider the darker implications of the relationship.

Granted, there must be some good fic out there that writes it romantically without entirely ignoring the fact that it's not Castiel's body, but when I ventured forth I found it very hard to find. Most of the fic I ran into described it as very fluffy, romantic, and spiritually saving Dean - without any mention of consent. Then, seeing that a few of these users were part of the Ruby/Sam wank and getting all hot and bothered that it wasn't her body really lead to the facepalming.

I could see not caring about consent for story purposes, but then turning around and flouncing over consent in another pairing? It becomes harder and harder to deny that it has less to do with the characters being paired up, and more with the gender of the pairees. M/F = Satan rape and implied competition, while M/M = pure true love. And I'm saying this with derision as a very hardcore slasher with no issues with writing rape fic, Wincest, RPS, whatever the hell floats your boat, etc. It's the inner fandom politics that really has me throwing my hands up in the air and going "WTF?!" at my computer screen. Shipping can be an amusing and baffling thing.

Canon gay secrets and scans_daily pushed me to finally read The Authority. They are LOVE. (Now if only there were more canon Les ones to introduce me in the same manner...) *adds Manhunter, Top 10, and Starman to the list* It's not just for the hot man/man interaction either, I just really appreciate really good books that happen to share my views on sexuality. It's fun reading something I identify with.

We all know (Well, lots of us, anyway) that fiction =/= real life, and when we ship we ship because we like the RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS, or because we find them interesting. Hell, some of us ship pairings that are twisted or abusive, or would be twisted or abusive should they happen. So? We don't want to suffer from our relationships; But watching or reading them in fiction is what we enjoy, and no, this doesn't make us sadists.

Hate them all you want, but when you use the excuses of 'slut' 'whore' 'bitch' 'gets in the way' to justify it, especially when there's canon proof against these statements, is stupid. But hoo boy, I smell the stink of an elitist "lol you peons know nothing about REAL relationships" attitude behind this secret, to which I say screw you. This not!teenager is in a healthy, happy, long-term relationship, and both my SO and I ship all sorts of stuff. And there are plenty more like us. Different relationship dynamics appeal to different people. Sometimes we want to explore these dynamics because canon doesn't, or doesn't explore them as fully as we'd like. But then I realized that antipathy towards female characters because they get in the way of teh buttsecks is silly and a waste of energy, and that such simple things as nonsexual interaction between the guys a preferred pairing(s) can be just as interesting and fun to read and write about as smut. And you know what? I have just as much fun in fandom now, if not more, than I did then. I hope you can too, someday.

101. Actually most people ship for fun. While some of their own desires might be projected into ships, it's no different than fantasizing, which most people do (I mean, who doesn't at one point fantasize about being in a more exciting world, relationship, etc.?). It's fun to fantasize about those things. And you know what else? It's perfectly healthy and normal.

A lot of people are aware that these are fantasies too. They don't go around actually believing that what they see, read, etc. in movies, books, anime, etc. is how it is in real life. It's more of a "It would be interesting/cool if it did happen in real life like this", and so on. Some people are just interested in aspects of specific pairings. They have certain dynamics that appeal to them, and it's fun to see those dynamics at play. For instance, I get a real kick out of love/hate relationships, but I would never want one in real life (it would drive me crazy).

And you know what else? A lot of these people are in healthy, happy relationships too. And they're not all teenagers (Honestly, what was with that agism? A lot of teenagers are well-aware of the nature of love and its complications, etc. Not all of them are inexperienced in that area).

And Waku in the front (I think? right?) makes me unbelievably happy, since I loved Waku and his death at the start affected me more than any of the others’.

Hey, at least you're honest about it. I quite strongly disagree with your mindset, but I have far more respect for someone like you who openly admits what she's doing than I ever will for the sort of slash fan who does the same damn thing and then lies about how she doesn't really hate any female character for getting in the way of the slash. And then turns right around and makes up all kinds of rationalizations about how this particular female character is simply objectively an evil whore who deserves to be bashed, and it's really just a complete coincidence that she's the canon love interest.

Education:
It isn't "selling out", it's just a different upbringing. Here in England EVERYONE, including many many American actors/actresses that wouldn't be caught dead in a commercial in america, do commercials. Here it isn't considered selling out, it's just another way to see your favorite person on teevee. It's considered more funny and light-hearted to see which products they decide to advertise. Same for new popular songs. It's no surprise that Hugh would do a commercial, because he's English, and that's just how we roll.

Also: the product is for babies. Would you rather them do the testing on babies? I can understand being outraged at animal testing if it was for something ridiculous and superficial like eyelash makeup or something, but things like medicines for everyone or baby-important things like skin lotion and whatever... that's important. If you're against ALL animal testing you better be doing research any time you take any medicine ever. Know anyone with cancer? diabetes? asthma? better hope they aren't using any of their treatments. All animal testing.
