I forget the title of the novel and the name of the author but back in the 90's this book I read was supposed to be scary (it was about a boys' private school) and was even recommended by Stephen King and it was just dull. The closest it got to being scary was one kid was named Howard Stern.

Pretty much everything billed as horror.

Look, I'm not fearless. There are things in media that freak me out, It's just that there's never been anything in the horror genre that scares me.

Any giant spider. CGI, puppet, whatever. The just aren't scary to me - sometimes they are laughable, sometimes they are cringe-worthy, sometimes just puzzling. They just never look real or move that realistically to me.

I played the Hallowed Hallows Headhunters DLC for Borderlands 2 and was spooked by it, also theres this campfire channel that is literally just footage campfire in the woods and it totally creeps me out,.. But then again I'm a wuss.
(there have been horror movies that don't scare me, but those range from old horror movies to body horror flicks)

A lot of these pixelish indie horror games that people keep freaking out about. Pixel graphics just aren't scary to me, no matter how many jumpscares you throw in it.

Now strangely enough, I was a bit creeped out while playing Houseflipper, of all games. It's just such a silent, creepily empty atmosphere, I keep expecting a horde of Zombies to pop up or something. (Though ghosts and stuff would be creepier. I don't find zombies all that creepy, just gross.)

Meant to be scary, but not: The original illustrations to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - except for the one with the spiders in the woman’s face (that got me pretty good, too), I remember thinking as a kid that they were trying a bit too hard.

Not meant to be scary, but was: a how-to cartooning book my dad had. There was a page of caricatures of different sizes, and one of the largest was a woman’s face that was exaggerated to resemble an ostrich, staring straight ahead with a huge toothless smile. That haunts me...

(There was also a ‘50s-styled kid that was almost all giant teeth and his eyes hidden under a cap that gave me chills at first, but for some reason, I was able to talk myself into being ok with that one. But never the ostrich-face woman.)

People who let their dogs run loose in un-fenced yards or public areas and don't keep an eye on them... fuck you. I don't care if you think your dog is the bestest thing ever and loooooooves people. That's dangerous. You're endangering your dog by setting them up for an accident or nasty encounter with a kid, pedestrian, or someone who has an anxious dog (on a LEASH because we're IN A PUBLIC PLACE) who will freak out and try to protect itself if it sees another dog running at it.

stuck up people in my apt bldg. I had to deal with one this morning. I was standing in the elevator and she sneered at me and said "are you going up?" in the snottiest voice I've ever heard, and I said "yes" pokerfaced and she looked disgusted and got on. what a bitch.

Found out from another relative that my family aren't visiting me for christmas anymore. They're still using the plane tickets I gave them money for, but they're going the opposite direction from the airport to stay with friends who live in a nicer area. They won't be seeing me because they won't have a car and it's hard - their words to my other relative.

There's a train direct from the airport that stops a block from my place. Costs about $2 per person.

I should know better by now I guess but the babies were excited to see me and I didn't want to spend christmas alone.

Etsy artists. I get that it takes time to make things, and I get that things get made in the order that orders for the things were placed: I understand that there are several orders ahead of mine and the artist will get to my thing when they get to it. I even get ~artistic temperament~: not feeling up to doing it today? Okay, how about tomorrow then, will that work, especially since I have already paid you for the thing?

Honestly I think I'm done with purchasing from Etsy artists, because in the ten+ years I've been shopping there, I've had problems with all but two or three, and its always been a timeliness issue. Currently I am waiting on a ring I bought and paid for in June. A recent inquiry into how much longer it was going to take (since it's now almost October) got me a snotty toned "please reread my terms" reply; yeah, bih, I read your terms AND SAW THAT YOU HAD CHANGED THEM FROM WHEN I ORDERED MY RING. Also, I specifically ordered that ring to take advantage of a discount that artist was offering that she didn't give me. Meanwhile, this ~artist~ is posting her new tattoo pics on her Instagram and talking about how sad she is that all the joy has been sucked out of what she does, because her customers want what they fucking PAID HER FOR, I guess. And the really sad thing is that she seems to be the majority, either that or I've just had really bad luck with awful, flaky people who are just in it to take people's money.

Sigh. I want to do the nice thing and Support Independent Artists, but why do so many of them make me never want to do it again, holy fuck.

I ordered a pair of corduroy pants and a sweater and they came today, but I'm in the SF bay area and its 99° outside so it'll probably be October before I can wear them. (I love them tho, the cords are cornflower blue high waisted flares and the sweater is a cowl neck gray boucle with extra long slim sleeves. It's soooooo comfy! Dammit will summer ever end, lol!)

I finally wrote to that artist I commissioned over two years ago to demand a refund because she never delivered.

No response so far (two weeks ago now) but I didn't expect any, tbh. She even came out and said she's ghosting messages in the past.

The situation just sucks. I was so excited when she opened commissions back then because I loved her art style and have an OC that fits her aesthetic so I jumped at the chance - me and a friend added money for a two character commission. It was not a cheap commission either.

Then came the wait - and we were very patient. We knew she was a popular bnf artist in a popular fandom at the time, so we expected she'd have a lot of people who commissioned her. We also knew she moved recently and hey, sometimes things just add up you know?

Then her tumblr went completely silent. Nothing for months. Over half a year later, she popped up again with a general update: That she moved, that she has depression and general mental problems etc but that she hadn't forgotten about the commissions and was working on them. Okay. So let's be patient. Sometimes, these things take a while and hey, I know how much depression sucks.
She kept tweeting and posting selfies on her Twitter in the meantime, all in a language that could only be read with the built-in translator. Most of it was general "woe is me" stuff. No art anywhere, for a long time.

In the two years of wait, she never contacted anyone personally. She gave at max 5 official updates, always something along the lines of "I haven't forgotten, I'm working on it, I actually finished some!". The last part, I highly doubt. Because she never posted anything and nobody else did, either. Halfway through, she actually opened commissions AGAIN, plus opened a Patreon. Which sure, she needed money, but it's always a terrible idea to take on new stuff when you never actually finished the old work when you're already mentally unstable.

One day, she opened b&w sketch commissions on her twitter, exclusively for her own country's fanbase. She also finished and posted the, quite quickly. At that point, I started to get a bit ticked off because it had been over a year and no word, but she finished those newer commissions already? What even? So that was the first time I sent her a message. I was nice and just asked politely about the commission status, because she apparently was drawing again and that's great and everything. I was walking on eggshells because I really didn't want to be mean to someone in a similar mental state as myself.
There was no reply but some time later came an official update where she outright said "hey, I'm ghosting all your messages because I can't deal with answering them". So... yay. Great.

Then came the latest update some months ago, over two years after taking those commissions. She once again said "Hey I'm working on it ~on my own time~ but I managed to give some refunds as well". And that was the point I decided yeah, so if she says she gave refunds, I want that as well. Mostly because It had been so long and me and my friend were so annoyed with the whole situation that we actually really didn't want that commission anymore. And it was too much money to just throw away without at least trying to get it back.

But yeah, I'm not hopeful. She went all "Please be assured I didn't just steal you money" in that last update but really? I think she did. I'm pretty sure I won't hear from her again.

Parasocial Relationships

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
