Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
So it's apparently been decided that a ship in one of my fandoms is incestuous and therefore wrong although they're step siblings whose parents didn't even start dating until they were adults (and not even young adults). I get people being squicked out by incest, but I feel like that situation even counting is kind of ridiculous.

Anyone have any fandom-y things they want to complain about?

Argh, that's annoying. Also reminds me of that one post I saw that said all ships amongst the Batfamily are incest and just... sigh.

For me it's currently Star Wars fandom. All of it.
1) Yes, I like Reylo. Yes, I do think the shippers are a tad annoying. No, I don't regularly ship the innocent girl with the villain (I actually have never done that before? People can ship on a case to case basis - shocker!). Yes, I want Kylo redeemed, but actually mostly cause I want Leia to have some happiness and not cause of a ship. Yes, I ADORE Finn. He's one of my favs and I don't ignore him for ~white boy abuser Kylo.
2.)Han Solo was never a favorite of mine and I'm kinda glad he's dead after how terrible I thought Harrison Ford was in TFA.
3.) Which I also thought was a very weak movie (no, I don't think TLJ was flawless).
4.) I actually adored the Aftermath trilogy and am sad about Chuck Wendig likely never being able to write for SW again

You'd think SW fandom would be big enough that I could find a little niché in fandom where I could just stare at pretty fanarts and gifs without any ~this is problematique posts to annoy me but apparently not.

Star Wars fandom is the worst honestly. It is the only fandom I've met that not only seems to insist that certain options are objective fact that no one can disagree on and that the creators owe the fans exactly what the fans want (those fans who are unhappy only, of course), but that it is perfectly okay to attack people who disagree and even the creators in real life and just generally be nasty and try to ruin this for everyone. I still love Star Wars, but I mostly avoid the fandom.

I'm so fed up with the Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac fandom's joint decision that Death Mask's real name MUST be Angelo because ~irony~, urgh.

there's a popular fic-writer in one of my fandoms who writes legitimately the most boring and meandering fanfic i've ever read. genuinely NOTHING happens in their stories, N-O-T-H-I-N-G. it's all pointless, unbearably dull internal-diatribe from character X, who they also write as a completely flat piece of cardboard who somehow always ends up with Y despite putting no effort into making that happen, Y just turns up at the end to reward X's mediocrity by dating them.

i've read their fics because they're always recommended as 'amazing' and i try to get into them but i just... can't. they're too fucking boring. the sad thing is the prose and dialogue aren't even bad, but the content of their fics are always the dullest things in existence and i'm just so baffled at how they're a popular writer in the first place. even their smut is boring ffs!

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
This. Like I can handle nothing happening action wise, (to a certain point) but there's no point in writing a fic if the ship has no buildup or chemistry. Ugh!

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt.

not only does nothing happen in their fic, they're multi-chaptered snooze-fests of nothing happening, where character Y is present for 3 chapters out of 10 while character X gets to have a life and story-focus. not that it does anything due to the aforementioned cardboard status, but the ridiculous discrepancy in their character favoritism just BUGS ME. if you're writing X/Y fic can they at least BOTH be present for a majority of the fic???

That makes like zero sense, I get it if they were raised together but their parents getting together long after they grow up means just about nothing.
I actually had a friend whos father got together with the mother of the guys she was dating. They weren't happy about it, and their parents relationship lasted a lot longer than theirs, but that didn't make them siblings all of a sudden.

Hate that! (I'm a Wincest shipper, but still - annoying!)

I really, really, really hate when someone like Bucky Barnes is so woobified as to be infantalized. I mean...COME ON. Stop that.

Also - please make something *happen in your chapters*, we're hitting the 20+ mark now and almost *nothing has happened* and i'm about to give up.

Haha same! I have some other incest ships too, and I get that a lot of people are bothered by it. Which is fine, people can be bothered by whatever they want. It just makes way more sense to me if it actually IS incest. But "their parents got together way after they became adults" so it's wrong to ship them is just...weird to me.

It's just dumb. Familial feelings don't just automatically happen 'cause your parents got married.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wouldn't even look sideways at that kind of relationship if it happened in real life, that's how fine it seems to me.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
ugh the infantilzation crap bothers me SO MUCH, and i've gotta be honest i do not get how writing a competent adult, who has a sad backstory, as some kind of tiny baby child is at all appealing. there's doing stuff with their angst-past, and then there's woobifying them so much there's no way they'd actually manage to live the canon life they'd do because they'd be having break-downs every five minuets.

and this shit is 1000x worse when it comes to smut, i like my ship being written as two adults enjoying each other and having fun sexing each other up, not a parent and their literal child-in-an-adults-body who need their hand held because SEX IS SO SCARY, OMG IMPURE THOUGHTS. there's nothing more unsexy to me than one-half needing to be 'guided' through sex like and infant.

I'm still mad about all the people who insisted Snow was a pedophile for dating/being engaged to Serah from FFXIII. FFS he was 21 and she was 18.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's just ridiculous.

I remember months ago seeing someone complain about how a four year difference between middle aged people was abusive because of the age gap and that just boggled my mind.

People are crazy.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, was about to post something similar. No, dumbasses, it's not pedophilia when two consenting adults get together, regardless of the age gap. Cradlerobbing, maybe, but use the correct term FFS.

Of course, when YOU do, they assume you condone pedophilia just because you had the nerve to point out the difference between pedophilia, hebephilia, and ephebophilia. Which of course leads to people condemning ships involving two people who met at 17 and 24, even if the romance begins years later.

I don't get what reality Fullmetal Alchemist fans are living in that causes them to think everything about FMA is fresh and woke and unprecedented by any other anime or manga, and that Hiromu Arakawa is also the only woman who ever wrote shounen manga.

A couple weeks ago a post came up on my Tumblr dash, and it was all about what a GENIUS Arakawa was for making a shounen protagonist who was rude and obnoxious rather than an optimistic sunshine child, what a breath of fresh air that was! And I'm rolling my eyes in their sockets because Ranma Saotome, Yuusuke Urameshi, Inuyasha, Ichigo Kurosaki, etc. etc. didn't die for Edward Elric to be deemed the first hotheaded jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold shounen protagonist EVAR.

LMFAO THEY SAID WHAT

you are not wrong, anon. ffs. Ranma and Yusuke alone would be enough but...

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this, especially when it comes to Winry. I mostly liked her but seriously people, at the end of the day she is in fact the typical sidelined female character in a shounen series. Bending over backwards to show why she's so amazing and not like the other shounen heroines and this why Arakawa is so amazing because clearly no other shounen series has ever had good female characters is just annoying (actually I'd like to also direct this to One Piece fandom and to some extent Boku no Hero Academia as well. You can admit that your series has flaws when it comes to female characters and still enjoy it, it's fine, you are allowed to still like it).

Yeah, calling that incest is pretty ridiculous. It's really not incest.

I made the rookie mistake of leaving a glowing review on the first chapter of an MCU WIP fic. The fic then turned out to be really OTT about bashing most of the Avengers and acting like they’re all abusive to Tony. Now I wish I hadn’t left the comment and the kudos. I love Tony, and the first chapter of the fic was good, but I hate OTT character bashing. Plus, the next few chapters weren’t anywhere near as good as the first chapter anyway. Such a rookie mistake.

Eh, sometimes that's how that goes. I hate bashing in fic, especially if it's just super over the top crazy ooc stuff.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I stopped giving logged in kudos to WIP fic. I got tired of having my screenname visibly approving of a fic that turned to crap afterwards.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you abandon a WIP don't mark it as completed. If you mark it as completed add a tag or a note to the summary warning that it was abandoned. If you don't add a tag or edit the summary at least use the author notes at the beginning of the fic/first chapter.

Basically, warn that this fic is abandoned anywhere other than the author notes at the beginning of the last chapter you posted, meaning that I wasted over an hour reading a pretty good fic only to end up being blue-balled.

I only ever look for completed fics. I read carefully the tags, summary, author notes at the beginning (and sometimes even at the end to see if the fic has an actual conclusion or if it is just like part 1 in a planned series or something). And still they got me.

Re: Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2019-11-02 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Some asshole got me with this yesterday too! The end chapter was just a note to go to their wattpad page where they might post the completed fic at some point. Fuck wattpad. Fuck people who mark unfinished or abandoned fic as complete.

Careful what you wish for...

I once had a fandom friend who, after being disappointed by the direction a story was taking, would "complete" them by having some previously unforeseen catastrophic event destroy the world it took place in.
