[Fire Emblem: Three Houses]

Being white in a video does not equate to being some sort of white supremacist in real life. Technically, the game is Japanese and set in a made up land, so white is not the default race.
You might be right about his violent streak, but it's that type of personality that people have always been drawn to, and always will be drawn to. You don't have to like him, but don't try to play the race card just to get people to side with you. Like, seriously dude.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP but eh, I do think the fact that he's widely perceived as fantasy white would make a difference here. If he were a dark skinned fantasy person... they usually have less fans.

Not that fans of him are necessarily racist, but the trend is a thing

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
The OP mentioned nothing at all about white supremacy. You brought that up, not them.

And fandom having a strong pattern of preference for white characters over time is hardly some kinda absurd hyperbole, whether you agree with the idea or not. And similarly, it's hardly absurd to suggest that fandom might perceive an anime character as white.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that he's a white supremacist, it's more about baggage.

Also he is absolute white. He lives in a place based on fantasy Ireland and his hair is blonde, which is a normal Japanese shortcut to "is Caucasian."

Also like. He was the most popular far and away since before we knew about his violent streak so.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
His story branch was super, super personal. I'm not surprised it's lead to him staying popular.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'd argue Edelgard's story branch being all about how she was getting back at her abusers was pretty personal, too. She was fucking robbed.

And LBR, most people only care about Dimitri because "hot white man with manpain."

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Her extreme facist tendencies and the fact most people play other routes first probably has something to do with it

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no horse in the Dimitri race, but seems to me a lot of Edelgard stans are willing to overlook all the bad things she does too because she's their waifu.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't played this game yet and am not familiar with the characters.

But just chiming in to say people deliberately ship characters with bad personalities. I mean, are you new to fandom? Being hot is important (and so what if it is? It's sexual fantasy!) but troubled manpain and violence? Obviously that's going to headline ship wars. And that's okay. There's literally nothing wrong with any of that. Shipping is fantasy, not real life commentary on ideal relationships.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's still really noticeable how it's only white manpain that's sexy.

lmao dimitri was absolutely not the most popular since before we knew nothing?? everyone made fun of him and his shitty hairstyle. he had some fans but he def was the *least* popular lord until timeskip reveal at E3.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2020-01-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
All three (or four if you count Rhea) lords have their hardcore fans, it's just that people think Dimitri had a more fleshed out and complete character arc than the other two. Edelgard wins her revolution and then defeats the people who abused and traumatized her off screen? That's unsatisfying imo.

I'd normally agree, but I think Dimitri's one of the few exceptions.

There are theories, that I'm inclined to believe, that one of the reasons for Dimitri's violence and instability is because he's literally being haunted and goaded to give into his need for vengeance by his father and the others that died in the Tragedy of Duscur. The events that lead Felix to start calling him the Boar happened post ToD, his good childhood friends have no idea he's probably hearing the real, actual voices of the people he saw die.

I think people also are forgiving towards him because he doesn't make excuses for his actions. Spirits are possibly haunting him, but he owns that his bad acts are his and his alone.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Theories. Because those are canon.

I don't go here so all I'm wondering is who decided to put seams across that coat to sculpt pec-shapes into it. That is not how clothing works.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... Romans did that with their armour as well haha.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of guys love Edelgard the most because she's a hot white lady but nobody seems to have a problem with that.

Lots of girls like her for that too and act like it makes them superior to the Dimitri fangirls because their shallowness is gay.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I'm a Claude fan. But it was really noticeable how everyone I knew in the FE corner of fandom was going nuts for Claude since first reveal, while Edlegard was met with, "Yawn, I'm betting she's going to be waifu fodder." Claude got tentative and lukewarm at best responses and kind of got ignored.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I genuinely can't think of a single example of non-white "prettyboy manpain", so maybe that's part of it?

Not saying that fandom doesn't have a marked preference for white characters, but maybe in this case it's due to a lack of representation in this particular archetype.

Or maybe "prettyboy manpain" comes in all the colors of the rainbow and I just need to broaden my media consumption. I'd love recommendations!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm amazed people are able to even memorize names of the characters for this fucking series, there's like a million billion characters and they all look the same.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-10 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
The word "manpain" has lost all rights to be used even in cases where the very specific real definition is fitting (a man is in pain because something worse happened to a woman he cares about and his pain is given more weight and attention by the narrative than the woman's) because now people just use it for every make character they don't like who has things worth being upset about. And I'm not in this fandom, but I'd bet money that's how the OP is using it.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-11 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, yes. In this case, the male character in question has very legitimate reasons to be traumatized (he was the only survivor of a massacre that killed his family, and then he had to watch helplessly as the country where it happened was blamed for the entire thing despite his best efforts to clear their name, leading to a mass genocide in that country in retaliation). Anyone would be traumatized in that situation.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You seem a little obsessed with the color of his skin, sweetie.
