what one fanfic trope or setup do you want to see become A Thing in popular culture at large that shows up in actual movies and TV shows

I just wish we could go back to having more variety in fantasy and scifi. Sure, dark and grim has its place, and I like some of it. But I'd like to see more hopeful, heroic stuff too. Just give us variety. Not everything needs to be R rated and/or depressing.

Yeah. I don't even need it to be happy all the time. A show can be a lot of fun and still explore dark themes and have sad episodes. What I'm saying is I miss Buffy and I would watch anything that could emulate the tone successfully.

This is why I like The Expanse. It's a "grimdark" universe, but has plenty of heroic moments too.

nb: I have only watched the first two seasons, so I'm basing my view on that.

I love and am a sucker for grim-dark scifi but even I'm a little tired of it. Mostly because I'm lured into reading a book that matches that description and it turns out it's terrible but partly because I would also like some variety. I am not completely averse to hopeful scifi or fantasy, in fact at this point in time it'd be a nice change.

Political marriages or marriages of convenience or fake relationships that turn real

I came here to say this.

+1 to the fake relationships! I love that trope!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like characters who obviously have strong chemistry but don't get together right away. I like seeing how those relationships build and change over time especially if they start off disliking each other. It's way easier to find in fic than tv these days. It used to be a thing in the 90s and then it died at some point.

I like truth serum/spells or something that reveals secrets as a plot too.

Yesssss to both of these!

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-01-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Slowly developing relationships are the best. But I want legit reasons for them not getting together, not stupid things like misunderstandings that could be gotten past with just a simple conversation. I want a relationship that slowly develops and is well-written.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
it's because of how tv has changed, no one knows if they're getting cancelled now so the writers will do as much as they can in one season. i can understand the frustration because some of my fave ships are slow-burns from the 90's, but i also get that this is how it is now and roll with it.

silverr: abstract art of pink and purple swirls on a black background (_love it)

I want more Noble Top Enforcer where the villain's #2 secretly helps the heroes.

I also like the variant where the #2 has been used up and tossed aside by the Big Bad as no longer useful, and the former baddie then achieves redemption (with or without dying) by helping the protagonists.

Found family that doesn't end in romance when the writers can't figure out what to do.

Actual repercussions for traumatic events.

A guy comes onto a girl, she says she's not interested, and that remains true. It doesn't turn out that if he keeps pressuring her she'll change her mind, or that she didn't really mean it in the first place.

I want to see HBO tackle A/B/O, just because I think it'd be fucking hilarious.

If I'm being serious, though, I want to see crossovers? I know how logistically difficult that is, but it doesn't make me want to see them any less. Weird ones! Not just like... Marvel vs DC or something, but like CSI and GoT. Weird stuff.

Intimate healing. Freaking love that trope.

Fake-out Makeouts, my absolute favourite!

Gangs/organized crime done right...

Strong platonic friendships (particularly between a mon and a woman) that aren't filled with jealousy, romance, or people saying how cute it would be if they got together!

Communication! No vague 'this is very important, but I'll tell you later' and then having the character always dying right after, or 'we don't have time to talk right now' even though what they have to say would have taken less time just to spit out and cause a lot less issues. Also I hate it when two characters fight over a stupid miscommunication that could be solved in five seconds but somehow lasts entire seasons for absolutely no reason!

This is probably so general that it’s cheating but okay. Fanfic has a tendency of making the shipped characters…integral to each other’s development? Like, their relationship with each other affects how they see the world and how they see themselves, and how they feel they fit into the world, in innumerable ways, big and small. Their relationship with each other ties very heavily into their own self-actualization over time.

That’s what romance is all about for me. That’s what makes a fictional romance compelling, period.

So I’d really like to see way more of that dynamic in mainstream media.
