136. LOL IRL - he would probably love to do that anyway, even if he's not your grandad

156. IAWTC, very very very much. I love that movie so much, it had a lot of darker things in it that I'd never seen before in a Disney movie, it was pretty much one of kind, since they haven't made anything half as awesome as that since.

Srsly! How many Disney movies feature the villain sexually harrassing someone and singing about "burning desire" and "sin" on screen! :p

138 - Jack is complete garbage, and I feel sorry for anyone who's inspired by poorly-written, poorly-drawn, poorly-paced dreck.

I can see why you'd keep this a secret.

OLD SECRET IS OLD.

HE HASN'T BEEN THE DOCTOR SINCE 2005, WHY ARE YOU POSTING THIS NOW?

[identity profile] followingmyfish.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
120. Um, wow. (Also, when are people going to grasp the basic fact that saying "I'm not a racist" in a situation like this doesn't actually make you look any less racist?)

144. Like other people have said, music defies language barriers. The fandom for Japanese music would be a hell of a lot smaller than it is if only people who spoke the language felt like they were allowed to listen to it. Don't worry so much about it.

144. Oh, please. I think I know all of five words in Japanese and I like that band as well. This does not make me feel guilty at all because there are a ton of Japanese out there who love English speaking bands and don't speak a lick of English.

Good music goes beyond the lyrics. It's the sound that matters. The melody.

Read the lyrics to the songs you like. I bet a good portion of them are trite but you still like them anyway, right? Why? Again, because of the overall sound.

Sometimes the lyrics don't actually have to be real words. Nonsense will do if the melody is right. Think of skatting.

This Elle Fitzgerald video is a good example where words don't matter as much as melody.

156:I love that song. It's one of my favorite Disney songs. It's just so chilling and melodramatic and over-the-top, but it's sooo good(and the Latin chorus, god I love it. I've always had a weakness for songs with a Latin chorus in them ^___^)

N!S TMI DEAR GOD

119 I liked that movie alright but it can never be my favorite version because it doesn't tell the whole story.

120 The inner city squad were better and your comment has the whole tinge of right wing talk radio style racism. I can't believe I'm even saying this because that means I'm admitting to even watching this dumb movie.

124 Doc Hammer's hair needs a fandom. Seriously.

134
I hate that movie for collectively shitting all over the most important comic book I've ever read. I know Clowes was involved with it, but it's still shit. It's more a Terry Zwigoff movie than a Clowes adaptation. (Although I felt like Scarlett Johansen was perfectly cast in this movie.)

143
But WTF, part of the whole concept is that he keeps getting hit on by a gay man, right? I like that dynamic.

144 That's how I felt about Eastern Youth. Well, kinda. I felt like a idiot because I got so into their music but I had no idea what they were saying, and a friend of mine told me that they played a show at some racist Japanese Nationalist rally, and that made me suspicious about them.

Anyway, I don't think you need to know Japanese to appreciate The Pillows. Also, you should support your local bands (if you like them at all, that is). That's important.

147 Am I the only person on the face of this earth that found FLCL inspiring rather than Gurren Lagaan? I'm beginning to think it's a mini generational gap or something.

149 I hate his character but, daaaaaaaaaaayum!

[identity profile] fruiterian.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
147. Dude, you're not alone in the FLCL thing. Maybe it's just because I watched FLCL at a more tumultuous time in my life, but it's been loads more influential than most other shit. Watching Gurren Lagann? I loved it, but it was pretty cheesy at times... I'd take FLCL over GL any day ;D

I HEAR YOU, OP, AND I SECOND THE MOTION FOR AWESOME FIC. I'm like the only person I know who enjoys Westerns, though, which makes me very sad :( because it narrows fic possibilities on my F-list by like 10thousand percent.

Re: 159

I feel your pain. I can never find any western fic, and it saddens me so. :(

[identity profile] fruiterian.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
144. I love the pillows. Oh so much. And I really don't know a lick of Japanese, and I don't think it's that bad. (I mean, how many people on livejournal watch anime and barely know anything about the language) But I think music's a different game anyways--you don't need to understand the lyric to understand the song.

Of course, this is someone who listens to a good chunk of j-rock... and who is more likely to support indie Welsh-language bands an ocean away than the ones who are close by.

170. Dude, I was just talking about Dan Savage with my Colbert-loving friend the other day. You're fucking awesome. (Also, I didn't see the episode in question, but that does sound freaking adorable. And, y'know, Terry doesn't have to just watch, he could maybe get in on the action or something :3)

102 - RUI! Has the HYD movie came out yet? I want to see it!

120 - Oh brother. Surely they didn't win because, *gasp*, they DANCED BETTER? Why is that NEVER a possibility? *sigh*

136 - Morgan Freeman is love.

148 - Uhhhhhhhhhh.. okay? And yes, they are GOOD for doing the same shit over and over. I can tune in after not watching for years and know what's going on cause it's the same recycled thing.

106. LOL

122. When gay couples catch me looking at them, I just give them a warm smile. It’s better than looking away; because that gives the false impression you think something wrong with their relationship.

144. OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD. I LOVE THE PILLOWS. THEY WERE MY FIRST ROCK CONCERT! THEY ARE MY MOST FAVORITE BAND IN THE UNIVERSE! Why the hell shouldn't you like them? Music is universal! Hell, it's what brings different cultures together! You don’t have to be the same nationality as a band in order to legitimately like them!

146. Me neither, bb. <3

147. This!

157. Well that’s because Ned and Chuck is the cutest thing on the planet.

171. Hmmm, I like them better as sisters. They're dynamic is great.

104. I think I need to know who Todd Rungren is, this very minute.

108. Hold on now, what video is this from? I don't remember him ever being attacked by people in blue uniforms in any of the AVGN-videos...

116. Those posters make me insanely curious. Are they of the same movie? Or remakes in different languages? Are the characters in the french children replaced by adults in the english, or are they the same characters who have aged? These questions, I must have answers to them.

126. Oh man, Gears of War slash. I wonder why that thought... simultaneously DOES surprise and doesn't surprise me. Having been on the internet I KNOW that people will ship anything, but so rarely seeing ship-stuff for supposedly serious, beefy shooters makes it kind of surprising when I actually DO come across it!

And regarding your desire to see slash, well... you have my sympathy OP, but I'm afraid that's the most you'll ever get. While something like TF seems to garner lots of slashy attention for some reason, I'm afraid GoW just won't strike anyone's fancy that way. Even if I hear that comfort-fic would be happening after the end of 2...

164. But but this is shonen! Certainly all obstacles can be overcome with friendship and hard work and effort, right? Right?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
TF has a different aesthetic that's generally more women-friendly. Since women are the ones writing slash, attracting women means attracting slash. The fact that it came in The Orange Box only helped that, I think.

144. You don't have to understand the language to like their music. Music is more than just lyrics. The lyrics on one of my favorite albums are in a made up language.
