Who are your favorite authors? Which authors do you think are good just about every time? The ones you'll read every book for.

I've never read a Garth Nix book I didn't like. From Sabriel to Shade's Children to The Ragwitch, everything scratches that itch for dark, sweeping fantasy.

I like his writing a lot too, though I've only read the series that Sabriel is part of. I should try some of his other stuff too.

So far, Tanya Huff hasn't disappointed me but I've also not read all of her books yet.

I haven't heard of her before, but her stuff looks cool.

Where do you recommend we start?

Re: Favorite authors

(Anonymous) 2020-04-04 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My current favorites are Meg Cabot, Nicola Yoon, Rainbow Rowell, and Sophie Kinsella. I used to like Sarah Dessen too, but not so much now after her Twitter fiasco. For my four favorites, I’ll always read whatever new books they have out, but the only one who hasn’t written a bad (to me) book is Nicola Yoon.

Sorry you got disappointed by Dressen. I haven't read any of these except Cabot, but I'm sure they're all great.

I haven't read a ton of Meg Cabot's adult stuff, but there's nothing from her YA selection that I don't adore. <3 And Sophie Kinsella always captures that adorable romantic comedy genre perfectly for me.

Robert Cormier. He set me on my dark path of loving books that end unhappily.

Ah. I will have to remember to stay away from him then because while I like super dark stuff, I prefer at least the ending to be happy. Glad you've enjoyed him, though.

Those are my two favorite genres too, with a bit of a preference for fantasy. Some of those I love, and some I haven't heard of. Adding them to my list to look into.

I will read anything written by CJ Cherryh. And, in fact, have. A couple of her books aren't my favorites, but 99% of her output is incredible.
William Gibson as well - *love* love love.
Same for Tanith Lee.

Love Dick Francis and his steeplechase/jockey mysteries, and love most of Pratchett's stuff. Love Isak Dinesen and Rudyard Kipling and Laura Ingalls, love what I've read of Mary Renault.

So many more....i have shelves and shelves of things, heh.

Oh, yes, CJ Cherryh. You are the one who got me into her, I think. She's really great. I've only read Neuromancer of Gibson, but I liked it a lot.

I have lots of shelves of books too, though not as much as I used to. Had to get rid of a whole lot of stuff because we are downsizing. Just ordered a bunch more, though.

Gibson is phenomenal.

Without a shadow of a doubt the Burning Chrome collection is my most re-read book.

Honestly a lot of my favourite authors are genre authors. Like Linda Howard, or Catherine Coulter, Meg Cabot, etc.

I love Jane Austen too, but it's not like she's putting out anything new. :P

Totally okay to have genre preferences. I myself have a major preference for fantasy and scifi authors, with an emphasis on epic fantasy authors.

I've read a lot of Alastair Reynold. I don't love all of it, but the Revelation Space series is possibly my favorite series of all time, and all his books are enjoyable enough while being fairly simple to read (= doesn't use difficult words, English isn't my native language and having to look up words a lot sucks). I don't know about favorite author but if I had to come up with one that's the only name my brain can conjure.
