Therapist News - Trigger Warning

I'm sorry, I don't know who to go to about this. I saw my therapist yesterday and she said 1) I might have a sexual addiction and 2) that I have a sexual dysfunction because my tastes in sex run violent (I'm a woman who has rape fantasies and prefer BDSM). She thinks I must have been molested at a young age because of it.
I wasn't but she doesn't believe me and wants to do hypnotism to recover lost memories. I am nervous and unsure.

She sounds like a terrible therapist honestly who isn't listening to you and is putting her preconceived notions before everything. I second the person saying to get a second opinion.

Do not do this. Find another therapist. She's not hearing or listening to you. She's going to go into your hypnosis sessions not to help you see your actual past, but with an agenda of making you see what she expects you to see.

Yeaaaaaaah, that sounds like bullshit to me. Specifically the "hynopotism to recover lost memories" thing. There was a whole scandal about false memory syndrome and people misusing that technique that led to accusations of devil worship, etc. in kids.

My first therapist insisted that there was something going on with me because one of my main hobbies was writing slash fanfiction. She was convinced that I must be a trans man in denial or secretly a lesbian and would get frustrated and short with me when I disagreed.

The problem is that I was in my teens and this was my first experience with therapy, and she was supposed to be a professional and know what she was talking about, so I started doubting myself. What if she was right? What if I was hiding my true nature from myself?

About a year in my parents decided to have a serious talk with me because it seemed that I was worse off than when I had started therapy and I finally broke down and told them everything. They helped me find a different therapist and one of them would stay with me for the sessions whenever I asked, because at that point I wasn't willing to blindly trust another stranger who could mess my head up again.

Apart from that, the whole recovering suppressed memories via hypnosis is a very controversial procedure because it is relatively easy to create fake memories and convince the patient of things that never actually happened.

I’m an ace virgin who is squicked by rape fantasies and anything other than mild BDSM. Your therapist is full of shit and the “hypnotized to recover lost memories” thing is a load of festering bullshit. I’m sorry she’s making you feel unsafe when that’s the opposite of what she should be doing. Especially about this topic. I know it’s not easy or always feasible, but maybe find another therapist.

Liking rough sex is just fine. You don't have to have molestation in your past to have kinks and/or fetishes! This therapist doesn't sound knowledgeable about things like that.

Rape fantasies are ridiculously common with women. That does not mean something is wrong with you or happened to you.

I echo the others. Absolutely do not go under hypnosis with this therapist, and find another/better therapist as soon as you can.

I've never read a Garth Nix book I didn't like. From Sabriel to Shade's Children to The Ragwitch, everything scratches that itch for dark, sweeping fantasy.

My current favorites are Meg Cabot, Nicola Yoon, Rainbow Rowell, and Sophie Kinsella. I used to like Sarah Dessen too, but not so much now after her Twitter fiasco. For my four favorites, I’ll always read whatever new books they have out, but the only one who hasn’t written a bad (to me) book is Nicola Yoon.

I will read anything written by CJ Cherryh. And, in fact, have. A couple of her books aren't my favorites, but 99% of her output is incredible.
William Gibson as well - *love* love love.
Same for Tanith Lee.

Love Dick Francis and his steeplechase/jockey mysteries, and love most of Pratchett's stuff. Love Isak Dinesen and Rudyard Kipling and Laura Ingalls, love what I've read of Mary Renault.

So many more....i have shelves and shelves of things, heh.

Honestly a lot of my favourite authors are genre authors. Like Linda Howard, or Catherine Coulter, Meg Cabot, etc.

I love Jane Austen too, but it's not like she's putting out anything new. :P

I've read a lot of Alastair Reynold. I don't love all of it, but the Revelation Space series is possibly my favorite series of all time, and all his books are enjoyable enough while being fairly simple to read (= doesn't use difficult words, English isn't my native language and having to look up words a lot sucks). I don't know about favorite author but if I had to come up with one that's the only name my brain can conjure.

So, like everyone else who's "staying the fuck at home", I've been needing to burn of some serious anxiety between my time at the "office" and the time with family, so I've started Tabata. One week into doing at least one set per day; feeling very good about it. At the beginning it was hell, and now I'm actually enjoying myself - as in, I'll think "Yay, one more hour of emails and bad skype calls and then I can do another one".

Anyone else do this / have any success stories, warnings, or advice to share?
