But you can? I hate tons of media and never been called anti. That is because I don't talk about the things I hate unless directly asked about them. Voila!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I do occasionally talk about ships/characters/whatever I dislike in my own spaces or when it is relevant to the discussion, and I have never been called an anti either.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You should be allowed to talk about things you like. That's a ridiculous standard to hold, for yourself or for other people.

"If you don't want to be labeled an asshole, you should only express positive feelings and opinions. If someone specifically asks, you can express negativity, but otherwise you risk being labelled an asshole."

That's not at all healthy, IMO. Negative opinions and feelings (that aren't ad hominem attacks) are valid, and expressing them is valid. It's polite not to give your negative opinions the same tags you know people are using for their positive opinions, but nobody should have to be invited to express negative opinions in order to avoid backlash.

OP of this comment

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess everyone thinks I am oppressing my emotions because I don't talk about that one character I hate? I just don't think if I hate something meaningless (anything having to do with entertainment/fandom), why would I even waste energy thinking and talking about it? Why would anyone freely give up time towards something they hate that doesn't matter? My energy is better spent elsewhere than talking about how much I hate Jon Snow.

I can see why fandom spaces become stagnate echo chambers.

Open your mind a bit and hear out differing opinions. Honest opinions, not ones couched in your etiquette. It will enrich you.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Try saying you don't care for anime when someone insists on telling you about every episode of their favorite series. I just don't care for the art style and storytelling in 95%. And when people insist that I watch their favorite and I turn them down I either get anti'ed or pestered that this one is different and when I watch an episode and don't love it then I get anti'ed.

It's fine to talk about not liking something if you say it once or every so often when you just gotta vent.

But if that "every so often" becomes every other day or so, that's when it becomes pointlessly aggressive and rude. You can say you don't like something, but some people feel the need to constantly remind everyone that they don't like it, and that's fucking annoying. That's a difference I think a lot of the defensive replies to you here are missing.

I have never been accused of being an 'anti', but yeah - sorry i don't like your 'thing', get over it. I won't yell at you about it, and you don't yell at me for not liking it. We're good!

i get this. sometimes i just don't like a character bc they remind me of a shitty ex i had or that one scene where they said that one thing reminds me of an embarrassing thing my dad used to say to me as a kid or whatever. or even stupid lil things like a certain trope just annoys me. and i don't want to have to justify why. but i've been in certain fandom spaces where i feel like every single negative feeling i have about anything has to be backed up by in depth meta to prove it's legitimacy and i just get tired and leave haha.

attacking people for liking stuff in fandom and just having fun is shitty, and i get why people might be on the defensive over it if they experience that a lot. but if you're really just minding your own business and letting people like whatever they like over in their own lane then i see no harm.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I respect that you hate something, that you have a different opinion than mine. And yes, people should generally understand that disliking something doesn't mean that you dislike the people who like that something.

On the other hand, people do connect with a character, place, fandom, etc for their own reasons, so in that regard, I can see how going on and on about how you hate something can feel personal for them. (I've been on both sides of this.)

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for turning my comment into a secret, OP!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate many canons, many pairings, and many characters, and I've never been accused of being an anti. I think it's because I keep my head down in fandoms that are more, ah, aggressive? About that sort of thing? Or maybe I'm just lucky.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
i agree that there's a difference between hating something and being an anti. you can dislike something and have intelligent discussion about why you dislike it without smearing your entire ass all over the fandom space.

an Anti does the opposite. they tag and scream their unwanted opinion in spaces where everyone has to see it just to get a reaction out of fans of the thing because they're trying to start shit. there's a difference between stating an opinion and being a combative dick. i gladly block people who shit all over the place with their hate and then i say "good riddance".

I don't think someone expressing their personal opinion is an anti. An anti is someone who claims their hate is an objective fact and who actively attacks those who don't hate the things they hate.

The problem is, there are some fandoms where real antis have actively destroyed the fandom and made most fandom spaces miserable for anyone who disagrees with them. So I understand why people would be wary of antis.

That being said, assuming that everyone who dislikes something is an anti is not any better and in fact is exactly the same behavior as that which makes the real antis so frustrating.

Why can't we all just live and let live in fandom? We all have opinions about things, both positive and negative. Opinions are opinions, why shouldn't people be able to freely express them? We're talking fiction here, not real life.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I thought antis are distinguished by the fact that they go after fans, specifically? No? I'm so out of touch with the newer generation I s2g...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Comment but not secret OP here and I thought so too, but then people act like tagging an opinion with “anti-whatever” and avoiding the “whatever” tag, or commenting in a general post on FS, is still anti behavior. Idk.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I though the same thing ! For me antis are not just those who dislikes or express their dislike about a show/character/ship/actor/actress but are those not respectful towards people that do. For instance, when an article is dedicated to celebrating a character/ship/actor/actress, you (general you) don't need to read it and even less to leave a lengthy nasty comment about why they are the worst and their fans are stupid for loving them. Do that on neutral or negative articles, please. If you, OP, don't do those things, you're not an antis for me and you do you. People that berate you about expressing your dislike are overstepping.

Honestly this is a bit of a mood. I love venting and bitching about petty things that annoy me in fandom. It's the fandom equivalent of gossiping over drinks. And it can be just as fun to find people who agree about the thing you're bitching about than it can be to be gushing about a thing you all like. I usually do it in private chats with individuals I know are of a like mind though. Doing it "in public" too often is just inviting trouble I don't often want.

I think this might be a case of "old fandom terminology" getting mixed with the new though. Perhaps. People use to say someone was "anti-x" if they disliked x but this didn't mean the person was "an anti" as we think of today in the puritan sense but simply they specifically disliked a particular thing in fandom/canon.

If you're really obsessive about bringing it up all the time and constantly talk about it though it may be fair to get labelled "anti-x". Venting every once in a while is one thing and sharing your opinion is perfectly valid but there is such a thing as too much when it comes to being negative about something. Especially when no one asked about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what an anti is. Antis are people who participate in harassment campaigns, usually over shit like false accusations of pedophilia.

People who are just critical aren't that. Though I have to say, people who are relentlessly negative all the time are tedious and tiresome and I do wind up rolling my eyes and thinking "well go find something you LIKE already."

Having a negative opinion isn’t being an anti. An anti is when you tote your opinion on some moral high ground as if it’s an objective fact and applying it to fandom/fiction and proceed to bully others for liking something in a non-moral way because godforbid there’s villain fuckers who don’t give two shits about “problematic” in a fictional setting.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-07 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wouldn't call someone an "anti" unless a large part of their online presence involves naming and shaming people who ship it.

I will only call you an anti if you’re entire online presence is dedicated to hating this particular thing and you spend all of your time antagonizing the fans by tagging your hate and/or spewing your nonsense into someone else’s inbox. I’m too old and cranky for that kind of behavior and just block outright.
