But I also wish there was more of more experienced submissive teaching less experienced dominant, regardless of who is in which position. Don't know if I should be recommending this, but in the Outlander series, the main couple has the man starts off as a virgin...

I occasionally browse the "first time" tag for my favorite pairings and, with very few exceptions, I'm disappointed when the author of a fic used it to mean "first time this virgin character has sex" instead of what I wanted, "first time this couple has sex with each other".

I don't mind it but mostly because one of my favorite storytelling tropes is emotional hurt/comfort, especially around feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, and this is as good a vehicle for that as any other

I also don't mind it/even like it a lot of it's written really good, especially if it's more in the vein of the less experienced one getting past insecurities or hang ups and not necessarily because they've never heard of what sex if before at all.

I don't know I just think of as potential to be really fluffy? And to me is more of a "taking care of someone" sort of thing than having interest in the loss of virginity thing.

I also really like it when it might be one of person's first good experience too.

I don’t mind it, but it can get pretty stale. I prefer it when the virgin character takes charge of their first time and plays an active role, not a passive one.

I love it in slash, but only when the virgin!bottom character is extremely enthusiastic and extremely responsive, and basically just too horny to be remotely nervous. Like, if anything the top has to get them to go easy and calm down a little and not just attempt to move immediate to "impaling myself on your dick" or whatever.

When it's all slow, and tentative, and the bottom is really nervous and insecure, and there's all the "I'm ready" talk that goes on and on...that I just find tedious and completely uninteresting.

Also, I like virgin!F/M a lot less than Virgin!M/M, even if it's done how I like it. It's just one of those areas where I like the extra distance from reality that M/M provides.

Yeah, this is my take too. I don't mind a little cute shyness on the virgin's part, but it's way better if they get just a taste and then practically become cats in heat, haha.

Oh man YES, I love virgin!bottom fics where the partner has to be like WHOA, SLOW DOWN BEFORE YOU HURT YOURSELF?? but the virgin bottom in question is just, yo, I have waited so long to do this, and I'm SO into it, let's GO, more SEX!

I also like M/M first time fics where it's an older character who hasn't had sex because he's somewhere in the ace-demi zone and hasn't wanted to in the past, but now does want to for whatever reason-- or even if it's a character who's been deeply closeted and denying himself, in period fic. For my own personal deal, I enjoy seeing an older character having a first time.

But M/F virginal first time fics... eugh, uninterested.

First time m/m fics don't fetishize women being uncomfortable/scared/in pain. They're more likely to show the characters mutually enjoying themselves

I hate it in published fiction and I hate it in fanfics too with m/f, m/m and f/f. It just reeks of purity culture. No, a character isn't dirtied if they've had sex before meeting your OTP. No, not even the younger/prettier/shorter/bottom one.

i actually love this trope, but pretty much only when the culture of the setting requires it. and honestly, even a lot of historical published fiction is moving away from it, which I do like, and more virgin dudes, which i also like (the amount of fiction where a stuck up dude had a mistress but was priggish about women, and I was supposed to like the dude or care about his growth? no).

I also love this in historical settings! Especially if having enjoyable sex for the first time is framed as a freeing thing instead of whatever else people who hate this trope assume.

I don't think I would ever read a female virgin fic in my life. It's all so cringey to me, and borderline psedo-pedophilia when it's done in such a way that the big strong experienced man has to teach the tender quivering young woman what sex could be, and ugh... I hate it.

I mean I'm pretty sure those are largely female fantasies that you're reading

Definitely agree, especially the last part. When I was younger of course a lot of my female friends made out like they’d never masturbated but once I got into my 20s I noticed most of us admitted it and feel it’s normal.

And I get that there are SOME women out there who have hang ups about it or can’t do it for whatever reason but man am I tired of female virgins in fic always blushing and acting like a child shaking their head if their experienced partner asks them to “show [me] how you touch yourself” and then asks “you’ve never...?” I roll my eyes reading that. It doesn’t make it more special if your first orgasm is from a big strong man ffs.

Am I the only one who looked at the image and thought "The woman is staring at the guy like there's spinach on his teeth, rather than with desire"?

Someone upthread already mentioned experienced woman/virgin man, but the other time I like virginity in my smut is when the inexperienced character is some kind of robot/angel/other nonhuman whose human partner is introducing them to physicality for the first time.
