I agree about non english speaking shows but this one looks so fucking bad...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-22 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Into the Night" is very frustrating. There's a global catastrophe and yet all the drama is generated from a bunch of men having dick-size wars. "Dick-size war as plot generator" is so not my favorite trope.

I'm going to be honest here, I don't totally agree. With regards to the shows themselves, I think they are (with a few notable exceptions) mostly not good enough to justify the annoyance of watching in subtitles, and watching dubbed is not a real option because Netflix' dubbing quality is absolutely atrocious. They'd be decent genre content other than that, but with that added in, no.

And that wouldn't be a big deal on its own because, after all, not everything Netflix does has to be for me personally. In a vacuum, I agree that it's super cool that they're making those things. But so much of Netflix' content production is composed of these kinds of international productions these days. Their native English-language production is anemically weak and generally not of high quality, in my opinion. In that context, these choices - emphasizing non-English language production, doing so with genre shows specifically and not necessarily of great quality, and not investing in decent quality dubs - just irk me.

"the annoyance of watching subtitles"
I never understood this shit. Most of the world have been watching subtitled american movies their entire lives but precious english speakers can't do it lol?! Unless you have a vision disability there's nothing complicated about it. I feel like it's just an excuse because they're not interested in foreign movies.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that it's impossible. It requires paying more attention and it's not really worth it for mediocre genre shows that I mostly want to watch as background noise.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's part of it, a lot of the world has been trained because of various reasons to read subtitles since they were a kid. A lot of skills are much easier to learn organically than to force yourself to obtain them. And whether something is annoying is a personal opinion, even if it's because of a lack of skill you have. A person who can't drive can still find their inability to get somewhere annoying.

NA

Most of the world have been watching subtitled american movies their entire lives - You don't find that annoying?

I, myself, get way too caught up in reading the subtitles to actually pay attention to the visuals, which is pretty important to a viewing experience.

If foreign movies were the same shit quality that Netflix pushes out then I wouldn't want to watch them either

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to knit or crochet while I'm watching things.

While I can and do watch subtitled shows, the extra complication of glancing down at my hands, then the subtitle, then the actors' faces etc. is an issue. (Not insurmountable - I've dived into C-dramas lately - but it's an issue.)

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either. I'm a native English speaker and subtitles don't bother me. My head does this weird thing where it 'hears' the characters speaking the words I'm reading. I'm not a pampered American though so maybe that's the difference.

Opinions differ. I have enjoyed a *lot* of the non-English Netflix offerings, and subtitles are not an issue for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I love subtitles because I love hearing the original voices and, when possible, expressions and little things that get lost in the dub. Honestly, for the people complaining, thats what the dubs are for.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly curious, do you not think international viewers deserve to have their non-dubbed, non-English content, even though they pay just as much for their subscriptions as Americans?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
There's different offerings for different regions. And Netflix pulls a lot from movies and shows that have been on T.V. before or were made a little while ago. So what's offered for each region they probably have a lot of shows in their language (that is if they come from a place that produces enough of them, I guess, I suppose some places probably don't make as many as others). So I don't think there's necessarily a lack of their own media but just that because of how big and widespread Hollywood and shows produced here (and Canada and the U.K.) that people watch a lot of them. Many of them have their own dubs over the actors though. Which is why I find it funny people act like they only ever get to see the subtitles (granted not all of them will have this option but it's not like it never happens).

I'm sure there's people who don't speak English who argue whether the sub or dub is better. People just try to turn this into a "check your privilege" thing because...?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely not. As I said in the post you're replying to, this wouldn't be a big deal on its own because not everything Netflix does has to be for me personally.

It's annoying specifically because I think Netflix' English-language production is really weak, and it seems like they want these non-English-language genre shows to also appeal to English-language viewers. But the non-English-language shows (for the most part) aren't really good enough to be worth watching in subtitles in my personal opinion, and they're not dubbed well enough to be worth watching dubbed. So it just feels like so much of Netflix' content is just betwixt and between.

So, again, it's annoying as a part of Netflix' larger approach to content, which I think is bad overall. I absolutely do not have a problem with them making non-English-language content in general.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...is there a reason why they wouldn't, if they believe it'll make them money? I mean they're not doing it for the sake of diversity.

Dark is so good! I am just getting into The Rain.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man I LOVE Dark. It's sooo good. Every time another piece of media has a time travel twist, my sister and I will turn to each other and say "WO ist Mikkel??"

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Dark has been incredible so far

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I like a lot of the non-English content. Dark is good, I LOVE High Seas, and I am here for any country they want to make Nailed It in next.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
The sets & costumes for High Seas are so gorgeous. I would happily watch hours of those people flouncing around the ship in their outfits regardless of whatever plot might be happening, though the plot is also good bonkers fun.

I wish there were more of a fandom for non-English content. I have so many feelings about a bunch of Spanish and Italian period dramas but hardly anyone talks about them.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched a lot of period dramas but I never really get into a fandom for such things. I just watch them and that's pretty much it. I'm sure you could find people to discuss them with it's just that I don't think a lot of them inspire people to write fanfic of them or anything.

i fuckin loved into the night! the guy who played the pilot is also in black spot, which is another really good french series.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this show Turkish? The first guy looks like the dude who played Mustafa in the Fatmagul novela! (Que culpa tiene Fatmagul? I know it in Spanish lol)
