[Murder by Numbers (game)]

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no. This seems like the indie game equivalent of queer webcomics.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOLed, then felt guilty...

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is that I guess there is an audience for this.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, what are these atrocious character/outfit designs?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They look pretty standard for the genre/style to me?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't say anything good about this genre.

The pattern on her top makes me think of Saved by the Bell.

The game takes place in the 90s, it's deliberate.

The 90s were like that

well if it didn't work with gay...

This screenshot is making me lol, though.

Not going to lie this is exactly what I thought. This looks like unplayable garbage but hey, it's the kinda stuff I'd probably *want* to enjoy and be unable to because it's so "scheenshotable".

As a queer person myself, I honestly hate shit like this. When I say I want queer characters, I mean that I want interesting characters who are queer, not characters whose entire existence and personality revolves around being queer. That's not representation, that's tokenism.

+1

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.
I tend to avoid most medias with gay characters because even if they catch my interest for that reason my second thought will always be 'but are they characters or just puppets with the word "!GAY!" plastered all over them'. Like I hate it whenever a character is just there to be a trope or token, but unlike the backlash media can get with other examples (like what a character sole purpose is to be the damsel in distress) there are too many people gushing over the inclusion of a gay character rather than the quality of them
Hell, I'll purposely avoid fanfic with tags like 'he's gay and he owns it', or ' she's a lesbian I don't make the rules' (well, maybe not those specific ones but tags like that anyways) because that usually means the writer amped up the queer factor by a thousand and every other line about them is about how gay they are. I mean it's fine if someone else likes it, but like you can establish someone as being queer and leave it at that. It's not as if I'm going to assume they're straight all of a sudden just because they're not a stereotype or it been longer than three seconds without mentioning just how queer they really are or whatever.

Writing a queer character like this is literally one of the top 'don't's of writing them.

I saw a discourse on twitter that queer characters who "blend in" are also bad because apparently that's done to avoid discomforting the cishet audience. I don't know what's the right way to do this anymore.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
See, I want more queer characters who blend in because I'm sick and tired of the stereotype that you can somehow identify someone who is queer because of how they talk/dress/act/whatever. Not only is it not true, it's tremendously othering because it makes it seem like we're some sort of separate species or something.

Give me businessman Stan who loves sports, always has his tie a little crooked, and can't cook for shit, but who shows up at a cocktail party with his male partner.

Queer is not, has not, and will never be, an actual personality.

There are stereotypes, which is how the word 'gay' (initially/literally meaning happy), eventually became a slur against homosexuals, How the word 'lesbian' is taken from the Greek isle of Lesbos, where in ancient times the Amazons, a society built entirely of women, were believed to live.
To put it very simply, not all guys who talk with a limp wrist and a lisp are gay, and neither are the woman whom won't hesitate to finish a hardworking job, no matter how disgusting or physical it might be.

There's this concept called reality y'know. Where people are made up of more than just tropes and have facets upon facets of individuality that allow them to be and live who they are.
There is no such thing as 'blending in' a queer character because being queer is a preference, not a formula, not a personality, not the sole identity that defines any one person.

Like they can't adopt a kid?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for the rest of us, this is how everyone who's queer and under 20 acts (online at least) and wants to be represented.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like no? How so?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. You all get so judgemental about a game you've never seen or heard of from one single screenshot.

The game itself is a visual novel murder mystery that's very similar in style to the Ace Attorney games. The costumes are ridiculous on purpose and the characters far more fleshed out than a single line of dialogue.

If anyone is interested in seeing what the game, and that particular character, is actually like just watch 30 seconds of this playthrough.

Sorry. It's all based on the secret - no idea about the actual game but, well, guess most of us are kinda tired of the same issues in other indie games or webcomics or what-have-you.

(Personally, I like the outfits even if they seem to me more like "mockery" of something than "90s outfits".)
