ILU 108 ;D

Everyone loves matty because he's so damn sweet (like delicious, delicious maple syrup)

And Canada is fun to learn about :3 we may not have a 2000 year history but the years we've been around for have been pretty interesting :D

Hetalia friends are the best, lulz.

(this comment seemed crack and fangirly. I'm usually so composed :'D)

This comment made me realize that I've never had maple syrup before. I hear it's a good substitute to honey... can you use it to sweeten tea and stuff? *ignorant European here*

108 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that... I don't drink tea. However, I wouldn't advise it.

But I'd would advise using it on pancakes and waffles~♥

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only ever used it on pancake and waffles, and sometimes ice cream/desserts. XD *Canadian here*

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Good enough. xD Apparently I'm sort of allergic to honey, so I've been looking for a substitute to use for cooking and whatnot. I think I'll try maple syrup (if I can find any here, that is).

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Try agave nectar. I've heard it's very sweet and good for baking and putting in drinks. As for tea, ugh, no, don't do that. You'll ruin your tea; it's just too thick for the job.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And by "cooking" I mean "toppings." Tonight my brain fails harder than usual.

[identity profile] sam-eileen.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
oh dear! you've never had mayple syrup!? D:>

one can you it in tea, or maybe on ham, but traditionally it's used as a topping for Pan-Cakes or Waffles. I hightly recommend trying it. :) Though try to avoid "imatation" maple syrup, its cheaper, but not as pure in taste. The very best comes from Quebec.

*apperently I'm an expert on Maple Syrup cause i'm Canadian? wut? lol*

Also, if you ever happen to be in Eastern Canada during the winter, try to visit a Sugar Bush, where they produce Maple Syrup. Trust me, nothing is better than Frozen Maple Syrup on stick! ^.^

I'm gonna be quite now...

Sadly I live in the darker depths of Europe, and maple syrup is not very well-known over here, at least as far as I know (I haven't really looked for it). But I think I'll definitely try it in the near future. :D It already sounds delicious.

Re: 108

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to jump in here and say, yeah, putting it in your tea is probably not a good idea. It has a distinctive taste that will most likely clash with the tea.

But on pancakes, waffles, or (my favorite) bacon? YUM. If you have sweet potatoes where you are (I don't know if they are only a North and South American food?), you can also drizzle maple syrup on top of baked or mashed sweet potatoes (with a little brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon...YUM).

Re: 108

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
On bacon? Wow... I don't eat much pork but I'll have to try that. And that sweet potatoes recipe sounds great! ...that's it, tomorrow I'm going to try to find some real maple syrup somewhere. (And sweet potatoes. They're not very popular here either. :/ I love them, though.)

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
The best is when you've got a big breakfast of pancakes (or waffles), bacon or sausage, and scrambled eggs, and you put the syrup on the pancakes (or waffles) and it runs off and pools around the meat and the eggs and you take a bite of egg and there's just a hint of syrup about them and it's this wonderful mild salty-sweet combination and this thread has made me remember the bottle of syrup in my fridge; brb making scrambled eggs.

*JAWDROP OF SHOCK AND AWE*

...

*recovers, clears throat* Sorry, you know, having one of those odd moments where you're reminded that foods you consider essential (e.g. maple syrup), childhood experiences you think of as formulaic (e.g. going on a maple drive), are not, in fact, universal! How strange.

But yes, seconding putting it on virtually all breakfast-type stuff (pancakes, waffles - what on earth ELSE would you put on those?! just fruit? - eggs if they're scrambled, sausage, bacon) and on many desserts (especially ice cream - good substitute for chocolate/fudge toppings), but NOT tea. Eww...

It's very sweet, and so goes good with sweet things, and balances salty things very nicely, but I agree the taste is too distinctive to blend well with tea.

Also seconding the "maple candy on a stick" thing - even if you are unable to visit Canada some time, you can probably find maple candy to order online if you were ever curious enough. And you can make sugar pie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_pie) with maple syrup, although that's like...an instant heart attack.

Funny, when I can't get maple syrup for some reason, I tend to pour HONEY on my eggs and bacon as a substitute.

[identity profile] ripxvanxwinkle.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
ha ha, late reply (and there's a bunch of other now) but yeah, Maple syrup is pretty much the best thing ever. It goes great on most breakfast items (waffles and pancakes, eggs, bacon, ham, but it's best with sausage [of any type- breakfast, polish, oktoberfest])... it tends to go best with pork, and even though I'm not a big pork eater it's so good D:

anywho, pretty much people consider it a test of your canadian-ness if you can eat more that two maple candies without wanting to die :'D

Also, in regards to tea, it doesn't work out too well, due to the thickness of the syrup. it's very unique-tasting and it tends to clash with more delicate teas :B

Also, real maple syrup is the only way to go. people have preferences, mine is Quebeqois syrup and the syrup that my uncle makes (ontario) xD

long comment is long B:

I don't like real maple syrup, but the fake kind is good. The flavour of the real stuff is just too strong for me.

Re: 108

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maple syrup can technically be used as a sweetener anywhere you would usually use sugar or honey. TECHNICALLY. It does, however, have a slightly different flavor than honey or cane sugar, though, so it's sometimes an acquired taste. I personally don't care for it because people tend to over-use it as a condiment or main sweetener and I tend to dislike sweets. But in the USA, particularly in the South and Eastern states, it's a common ingredient in all kinds of things, from chili to fried chicken, glazes for meats, gravy, vegetables, particularly beans, corn and apple breads, pastries of all kinds, stews and rice and the list goes on. It's hard to describe to someone who's never tasted it, but in savory recipes like that, just a little bit adds this level of sweet mapleness that's super-yummy in moderation. In addition to pancakes and waffles, you also drizzle it into grits or oatmeal or cold cereal or on top of fruit or toast. It's also really common to see sausages and bacon flavored with maple syrup (and maple-smoked, which is different).
