American Exceptionalism

We get it! You're the most special unique country in the whole history of the world. You are the best/worst at everything, the most wonderful/terrible in every way, the standard by which every other country is judged. We get it.

Now please
shut up

I have kind of the opposite problem, I'm American and I'm constantly being told how much better the Scandinavian countries are and I should go live there. I say I've never been there and ask what specific things are better and they get pissed and don't tell me. I tried googling it and the only thing I got that sounded really good was there's less pollution there. The rest of it doesn't affect me directly, for example, I got told college is free there but I don't want to go back to college, especially since I can't speak any Scandinavian languages anyway.

The quality of life is supposedly better over there. But I think their taxes are higher because of it?

"Quality of life" is not exactly specific.

Can't speak for countries I've never lived in but personally I'm all for higher taxes if it means better social infrastructure.

NAYRT - Look, I’m no expert on the politics of most European countries. But I will say that I literally cannot fathom living somewhere without at least a semi-decent healthcare system, gun control, and quick and easy access to abortion if needed. And that's just three huge points out of many. Your country honestly sounds like a dystopia.

" a semi-decent healthcare system, gun control, and quick and easy access to abortion if needed.".OK. Those are specific good points.

I feel like every American here probably feels bad enough about the country right now without you yelling at us about how annoying American exceptionalism is (which, singling American exceptionalism out also feels like a slightly self-contradictory way to deal with American exceptionalism in the first place, but whatever)

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. We feel bad enough already, they don't need to try to make us feel worse.

Re: What are you over?

I 100% agree, and I love how the comments are proving you right.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Please explain how, precisely, that is the case

(I suspect that literally any comment by an American would have someone saying something like this but still, please explain)

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Have Americans recently been telling you personally that Americans are exceptional, or is your domestic news media choosing to focus on the US a lot without regard to how much Americans actually care if you think they're exceptional?

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Yes. All the time. Even in this thread in fact, the way you people get so defensive about this sort of thing is insane. At least North Korea keeps to themselves with all their brainwashed nonsense.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Which specific posts in this thread do you consider "brainwashed" or do you think are saying that "Americans are exceptional"? Please link them. It should be really easy! There's about 5 posts in this thread!

Their news media tells them that most Americans believe America is the greatest. They believe their news media because it's completely objective and not nationalistic at all, unlike American news media.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
As another non-American, I completely agree. Their country is a garbage fire loose canon that is massively fucking things up, not just for them but for other countries. Damn right I'm angry at your country. I'm pissed as hell at your asshole country.

The fact that so many Americans (including "liberal" Americans) still get their egos out of joint when someone who isn't American dares to vent about how shitty it is to be having to deal with the fallout of America's bullshit is really telling to me.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're just throwing around bait but whatever, I see people shitting on America all of the time, both non-Americans and Americans alike. You're neither original nor alone in your wanking and there are plenty of hate circlejerks all around the internet for you to beat off to with others that share your sentiments.

Hoo boy, nonny. Not even gonna read the responses to this one! Think I can probably guess like 90% of them. Butthurt Americans are very predictable.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not butthurt, I fully acknowledge that the country is awful right now but there's very little the average citizen can do to make things better, and it just sucks for those of us who are doing all we can, and don't have the resources to move elsewhere, to have our noses rubbed in the fact that our country is a disaster.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. But.

I'm also over Europeans gloating over how much better Europe is, and I'm saying this as one of them. There was a Tumblr last summer where Europeans complained about a heat wave, and an American suggested air conditioners – and then Europeans kept reblogging and adding bits on how air conditioners are not a thing in Europe, historically, and how they wouldn't even work with the windows, and how they're expensive, and how it's stupid to buy one for just a few days of the year, and blah blah blah, just piling on and on. It was ridiculous. Like, yeah, Europe is pretty cool, but maybe once in a while, the Americans have a good idea? And that's just one anecdote in a larger trend, where every post about something fucked up in the States inevitably gets a comment by some condescending European explaining how this would never happen in their country.

American Exceptionalism is annoying and looked down on for good reason, but there's a definite wave of European Exceptionalism, gloating at the sight of America in flames, that rubs me the wrong way, and its existence and hypocrisy is not acknowledged at all.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
Aircon actively contributes to climate change which is causing the higher frequency of heatwaves. So... no.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
So your idea of European exceptionalism is people not wanting to buy expensive environmentally destructive systems to account for a handful of days of hot weather a year? Yeah okay.

Re: What are you over?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-26 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I just love how everyone piles on the A/C point and completely ignores the rest. I guess what I can take from this is, if it's something unpleasant or truthful, just ignore it instead of reacting to it! Because that'll make things better.
