4. Yeah, manga's the only type of fiction where bad guys always lose.

5. I..I tried to play it, I really did, but I just couldn't get into it. I have no idea why, either. I liked watching other people play it and I like the story and all, but I just can't play it. ._.

11. I'm so far behind in that series T___T I need to catch up DX

16. I've about given up on parts of my flist.

Hey, let's do it!

And actually, although she's not a BNF, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (the yarn harlot of knitting fame) has done something similar with knitters.

5. Hey, I help mod an FFVII-related comm and I'm tempted to defriend our own comm because of all the stupidity that goes down in it. DON'T WORRY, US SANE FFVII FANS? YEAH. WE KNOW HOW RIDICULOUS OUR CANON AND RETARDED OUR FANDOM IS BETTER THAN ANYONE. X_X

(And yet I still love it, abusive boyfriend it is. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy)

[identity profile] luzerna.livejournal.com 2007-03-15 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
5. WORD. It could be a nostalgia factor, like why people are still so obsessed with Sailor Moon and Digimon while the rest of their interests lie in more mature shows/books/what-have-you. Final Fantasy 7 was a great game for its time but it just can't compete anymore with some of the newer games. I guess I might have been jaded to it because I tried to get into it so late (around this time last year) but FF7 didn't live up to the fandom's promise.

14. It's hard bein' a celebrity. :( Not that I know from personal experience, but I could see why fans get to them. It's pretty well-known that fandom is populated mostly by half-brained idiots. If you were bombarded constantly with emails like "omg i luv ur stuff axel is soooo kyoot" or "wow ur a total b*atch and u suck why dont u just jump of a cliff alredy???" you'd probably get sick of it too. I sure would.

I've had the chance to speak with one or two people that would probably be labeled BNFs. They were both really nice people. BNF is really just another meaningless label to me now, like "emo" is; maybe I'm so out of it that I don't know of the cocky, airheaded little bums the term is so often attributed to but I've never seen one.

[identity profile] keikain.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the problem is people don't really recognize that BNFs are people, too. From what I've seen, people don't even try to be discrete about bashing them and are very forceful about requesting things they want from them. And, of course, they tend to attract the usual suck-ups hoping BNF-dom would rub off on them by association.

It's no wonder a lot of BNFs end up disliking fandom and their fans before they even realize that other people are calling them BNFs.

5. The game is shit, and that's why people are so attracted to it for fandom purposes, I think. When you've got characters that are just archetypes and trite plot, both have potential for massive growth. No one wants to expound on a world or characters that are already complete <3

15. Not-so-secret: I haven't read my flist in years 8D I read individual people's LJs, sure, but that's about it.

13. I used to be so obsessed with that anime, ohmygod. IT'S EMBARRASSING. I WAS IN LOVE WITH BROCK. My first fandom obsession. ;_;

...I mean, I of course know it's retarded now, and towards the end of my being obsessed with it, I knew how retarded it was and actually joined a group of more-mature fans who knew it was retarded but loved it anyway, and. Yeah. No, that makes sense. The games are genuinely fun and the emphasis is on gameplay rather than plot, and... yeah, Pokémon plot? Not really stellar. XD

12. Although this has to do more with the aforementioned secret than Sonic, I felt the same way about the Pokémon anime when they fired all the old voice actors and replaced them with new ones after they left 4Kids. I mean, not that there was much respect left to lose, but now I can't even watch the stupid new episodes for nostalgia's sake. :[ IT'S ALL RUINED.

[identity profile] vriska.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
5. I agree with the people who said that they tried to play this game and couldn't. I just couldn't get into the story, and I did give it a fair chance. I played about a quarter of the way through, roughly, and just didn't pick it up again. It really wasn't THAT great.

13. I used to like the show. XD I grew out of it, though. The movies kind of started going downhill after the third one, anyway. But I also had a huge obsession with it, with the human characters moreso than the Pokemon at times. It was amazing, I did so much horrible fanart.

But I still like the games, and am still planning on buying the new DS game. ...Even though most of the new Pokemon look really uninteresting and sucky. The older games really were better, though. Gold/Silver = LOVE. ♥

[identity profile] some-kat.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
5. You got farther than I did, then. It wasn't that I couldn't get into the story, it was just something about the gameplay I had a hard time with. I loved watching other people play it, though D:

(Anonymous) 2007-03-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
17) Oh, you're not the only one. Although I'm too scared to play an uke because there's so many people always bitching about them. I've NEVER RP'd an uke because of that. But ditto on the fantasy bit.

[identity profile] stormbringer986.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
2. I know a lot of people like that, in and out of fandom. You're nice to them one time for ten seconds and that automatically means you're BFFs for life.

4. It's not just sports manga. The villians never win, no matter how screwed the good guys seem to be. I HATE IT. I am totally biased since I've always been more for the villians anyway, but it still annoys the hell out of me! Stupid, stupid plot holes and god-modding! (Can you tell this is a pet peeve?)

10. I wonder the same thing about myself.

[identity profile] liltigre.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
3) You remind me of a friend I have who runs his CoX groups the samy way. Listened in on a Teamspeak session of theirs once and swore i'd never play under him- he SCARED me. O_o

5) I dunno. For me it's just that it was my first real console RPG. Not the greatest, not the best, but my first. Kinda like your first time having sex, but... not. :D

7) None of my furry friends use the word 'fursona'. Except my ex-boyfriend, but that's because he's a fursuiter.

8) ..... is there an avatar maker for that game on the web? :D It's kyuute!

13) I can remember waiting in line in Osaka to get a copy of Pokemon Silver when it first hit (and playing Pokemon Yellow while in line). Don't like the anime, only liked the first two movies... but the games? Big hell yeah. LOVE the games. .............. and Ash is floating in a giant glowy golden penis. WTF.

1. Yeah, I used to believe the same thing ... and it came back to bite me.

2. Agreed.

5. I think people like VII because it was the first RPG they played, or it was the most fun RPG they had played at the time. There's a lot of stupid shit in the game that makes me love it, though overall the plot in replaying it seems a bit cliche'. But really, the first time it was amazing.

14. Actually, most BNF don't care either way. I'm friends with a few of them, and really ... er, everyone's pretty much the same if you take the time to get to know them and not base everything off what people say on the internet. Most people don't realize their sway or their impact. We don't have any more money than anyone else, we're not super popular, we're not fawned over at conventions, we don't whore ourselves out in public and say, 'Adore me.' We're all a bunch of geeks and nerds at the end of the day.

17. Ehm ... I have a dominant personality, but I'll admit to a submission kink. Yeah. Lol.

(Anonymous) 2007-03-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mean to start anything, but I highly doubt you can know "most BNFs". Maybe you do for the fandoms you're in; but I have a hard time believing that you're in every single fandom that has a defined BNF, and that you know a majority of them.

5. It's a matter of timing more than everything else.

A lot of people started getting into video games with the original PSX. And the first FF to come out for PSX? FFVII. Thus, people remember it fondly as their first FF, first PSX game, first game period, etc. It's also a reason why FFVIII gets so much hate and why FFIX gets mostly ignored. The main reason, if you ask me. Everyone compared them to FFVII, even though I enjoyed both of those games more than FFVII. Don't get me wrong, I like VII, because Aeris is the most deceptively twisted little heroine that reminds me of myself, Nanaki was the first four-legged party member in an FF, Cid is just made of seven kinds of awesome. I too, think that it gets more praise than it really deserves.

13. ...lol. I miss the days when Ash would actually lose a fight for once.

[identity profile] ironjill.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
5. I really have to agree. A friend and I had a conversation about this tonight, but really...I don't get why its got...what...a movie and like...2 other games and planned other ones for it...I didn't like it. =/

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
5. Don't know why it gets bad fandom. The hype is probably just because the game was considered "revolutionary" for being the first FF in polygons rather than pixels, and I think it was one of the first RPGs out for the PSX...? I could be wrong, but yeah. It's made a lot more of an impact than you might think. I don't think that really justifies some of the atrocities that have come out of the fandom (and the new canon DDDDD:), but there you go. And that probably didn't explain anything and others have already done (I think) a good job of trying to explain it, SO WHATEVER. I just suck at shutting up when it comes to FFVII. |D;;

11. WE NEED TO START A SUPPORT GROUP. OH GOD, WHY. AND THINGS WERE FINALLY GETTING SORT OF CLEARED UP AND AND AND ASLDJWPGSSUP39*!!!!!!!

5. I played the game once, back in '99. I'm still in the fandom, but I refuse to play the game again. I'm too scared I'd turn tail and run away because the game would be hideous or something. I love my memories of it more than the actual game right now, I think. The same thing happened with FFX. The game was good, but I never had any ambition to explore it after I finished it. Then 2 years after I wrapped it I found an amazing fanfic, and it defines the game for me now. I don't think I could go back and play it without the fanon the author made.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
11. It's the same thing with SMALLVILLE... I feel your pain. And probably even worse, because episode 0615 of SMALLVILLE wasn't even that good. ;___; I had nothing to look forward to for a month! *hugs to you*

1.) I wish that were true, but I've encountered many snakes in the fandom grass.

4.) And it's always the same exact attack too. The anime/manga villain comes out with some awesome weaponry that can level towns/cities/planets/etc. and all it takes is the 'hero' to use something like 'SUPERSAIYANULTRAMEGASAILORSCOUTDRAGONLOVELOVEFIREOMNISLASHOFLOVE!' (or something to that effect) and the villain is destroyed. Everything else is just a formality. This is why I switched back to American comics. Even Superman has had his ass handed back to him numberous times. And even with all their powers, Professor Xavier, Celebro, the Phoenix and all that good shit, the X-Men STILL cannot one-up Magneto.

One learns more from defeats than they do successes.

5.) I stopped trying to understand the answer to that question years ago, and just kept smiling and nodding.

6.) Asking that of that particular fandom... you'll have better success running for President of the United States.
