I don't really have an opinion on this but I'm curious what the die-hard YKINMK, fandom free speech, anti-anti people think about it.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-25 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Big BIG difference between YKINMK and writing kinky fic based on an horrific event and fenocide that happened within living memory.

they don't say anything about it because it doesn't affect them or register on their list of issues. only people pointing out that fandom spaces perpetuate some fucked shit gets them rolling out the 200 page i-cracked-open-a-thesaurus-to-sound-smart essays on why you can't tell them what to do and any crit of fandom spaces is tantamount to real world oppression and discrimination.

Unless you are claiming that the Holocaust is just as imaginary as Snape and Hermione, I think you're trying to make a connection that doesn't exist in an attempt to sound clever.

I think the author has a right to write it and I don't want it banned, but they also need to face up to the rightful criticism they received.

I mean, here's my thoughts on it: YKINMK and that's okay.

Am I gonna read that fic? No. Do I find the idea of that sort of fic kinda weird and distasteful? Sure. Am I gonna go defend the author writing the fic? No, why would I bother to do that? They wrote the fic, they knew it was going to be controversial. But am I gonna go rant at them? No, why would I bother to do that?

I simply don't read it. Exactly the same as I don't read rape fic or underage fic or other fics like that.

I think their kink is disgusting, but since I'm an adult human being, I have better things to do than to use the search engine and tags to find people with the kink, send threats and suicide bait, try to dox them, post a dozen posts a day to a side blog about them, and chase down anyone who has any other connection as an enabler. All to shame nobodies with a follower count in the double digits for a similarly small audience.

I block and move on, which is probs the healthiest option.

The author of the fic in question is an edgelord asshole who writes shit specifically to stir up wank then uses the resulting wank to drive traffic to their patreon.

Do I believe people can write stories, including porn, using real historical settings? Yes. Am I going to waste one iota of my energy shoring up JD's massively inflated ego? Fuck no.

Fiction Is Not Reality made a post defending it. People were calling it a Nazi fic. He called that unfair because the MC is undercover to smuggle Jews out of the camps.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? Sounds gross, I wouldn't read it, and I sure hope it isn't used to justify censorship.

Anon because I am definitely going to get piled on for this, but imo fanfic writers can use any setting/scenario that original, professional movies and books use for their stories. There are heaps of stories that are highly offensive and insensitive to the groups of people who were/are affected by what is depicted. Student/teacher happens in fiction all the time when in reality it is at best power imbalance and often underage non-con. Stories with an organized crime setting in which we are to root or at least sympathize for some of the criminals are a thing when these organizations do unspeakable things to keep and grow their territory. Hollywood makes WWII and other movies all the time and is not above using them as backdrops for, maybe not a/b/o, but mainstream romance tropes.

Fandom plays in the same sandboxes mainstream does, and fan creators have no team behind them, make no money from it, have very little exposure. Imo they should not be condemned for not adhering to a standard that professionals with huge platforms who are making money telling these stories don't follow.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-25 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Why are fanworks (or original fic published in a fandom archive like this story) held to a different standard than mainstream traditionally published works? Bad as this was, there are far far worse things being checked out in libraries and sold in bookstores with nary a peep.

People who act like this is the worst, most horrifying fiction they've ever seen just sound like they don't read outside of fandom much.

I find it hilarious on how seriously people take fanfiction these days. Like it's imagination that can go in the most fucked up way possible that you can create and read for free, and just as equally people are free to not read any of it. But I suppose it makes someone feel better about themselves to screech about how evil someone is for imagining anything 'bad' instead of pure innocent unproblematic thoughts.

What a reasoned argument. Personally, I find it disgusting, but I also think the author is free to write disgusting, horrible things because free speech is a right. It's the ugliest but most necessary right, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-26 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
people are certainly free to make porn about terrible instances of human suffering, but that doesn't mean that doing so is in good taste or that people aren't allowed to be upset about it

Okay, reading through the comments on this I think I understand the issue: Kids these days do know of YKINMK, but they put caveats on it because they've never heard of DL;DR and ergo know no other way to avoid content they don't like but declaring it the exception to YKINMK in an attempt to get rid of the content.

Just scroll past it, or, if you've already clicked on it, use the backspace key. Where is the problem?

And there I was thinking we can't sink lower than tiktokers making a holocaust trend. But yes, I guess a Holocaust A/B/O fic is what we need on a platform widely available for everyone, for free.

There is a reason why fandoms like Hetalia and South Park stopped writing Holocaust-related fanfictions and anti-culture didn't even exist then.
