It's the little things

What are some of the little things keeping you happy these days, FS?

I did my nails with a pretty pinky-orange glitter polish, and I did a turquoise and black leopard print accent over that on both ring finger nails. It's...not subtle but I love it!

NAYRT--dude, a lot of people have a lot of reasons to be scared and miserable this year, and depression can fuck with people for basically no reason sometimes too. Leave them alone.

A warm, fresh, apple fritter eaten with an exceptionally good cup of hot, black coffee. That was this morning and I'm still not over just how good it was, lol.

I've been craving a warm apple fritter so much! But there are no good doughnut places near here and I'd have to make them myself, which takes the fun out of it.

Damn, that does sound good. Of course, I've never been disappointed by a pastry paired with black coffee.

My cat mostly. She makes me smile every time I see her. She's the light of my life, and I would do anything for her.

I took a walk today along a street with a lot of mature oak trees and they're dropping acorns like crazy. I don't know why, but the sight of so many of them make me happy. When I was a kid, I used to collect pocketfuls of acorns just because I liked how round and smooth they were, and I liked how their caps were miniature bowls. I'd put them in my dollhouse.

I don't collect them anymore, but it still pleases me to think about how many there are and how many I could collect if I did.

I got a house in FFXIV. It's by the beach in a little Mediterranean-esque neighborhood. Bur, first time Millennial homeowner, living the dream with virtual real estate. XD

I'm excited to start my vegetable garden; it feels like I've been hauling dirt and laying cardboard and moving planks forever, but it's gonna be worth it.

Also since I've had packages stolen off my porch since COVID kicked in, I've been having most packages delivered to my work and I got a text from a flummoxed coworker this morning (I have three days off, another reason to be happy) about the crate of daffodils that just got delivered.

My yard is gonna be awesome and smell amazing, I can't wait.

That sounds awesome!
I saw this cool vid about planting daffodils, crocus, etc. - a way to make your yard look like a flowering meadow. In the vid, they tossed up a couple/three handfuls of golf balls, just randomly, and everywhere they fell, they planted a bulb. Did this all over the yard, and in spring it was just starred with flowers. They were over blooming by the time the yard was getting long, so they could be easily mowed - it was a neat effect!

Good luck - have fun!

AYRT--I've never heard of using golf balls; I just chuck the bulbs, heh. It doesn't hurt them when they're dormant.

I don't have a lawn, but I'm planning to plant a bunch of these in the park strip and side yard and overseed with flowers and native plants.

I started playing violin again about three weeks ago after a hiatus of 17 years. I was never exceptional because I never practiced enough due to my mum thinking she was hilarious making funny comments about how bad it was living with someone learning violin for the first time. But I was competent enough to play easier pieces in tune etc.

Not surprisingly I'm terrible after so long not playing, but I'm doing something I never did as a kid: practicing every day. And every day something clicks and sounds better. Little by little. It doesn't sound like much, probably sounds screechy to everyone else still but I know the difference. I keep playing because of that, but also because "fuck you mother - you're meant to ENCOURAGE your child, not destroy their self-esteem!" (I have many other things in my life where I could level that accusation at her btw.)

Oh man. My dad was like this too! Hugs to you, nonny.

People found it really strange that he was a music teacher and I can't play any instruments or read sheet music. We had a piano in our living room. I asked him to teach me piano for every birthday and christmas for years. He played 3 Blind Mice for me once and told me I was only allowed to talk to him when I could play it all the way through. I was so excited to show him when I found all the right keys and put it all together and all he said was that I was a smart arse who thought I knew everything. Failed every prac exam in HS music class because I couldn't play in front of other people.

I hope your violin playing brings you joy now. People suck but music is great.

High five! And your mom sucks for joking like that. My family was like that when I tried to learn to play guitar. They thought they were being funny, but it was very hurtful and made me feel like I wasn't progressing, so I put my guitar away and didn't play for years. I picked it up again a few months ago and I had to start from square one again, but without people making fun of me, I can actually hear the difference between how my playing was last month and how it is today.

I'm sorry your mom belittled you like that; good for you for taking up the violin again.

Fuzzy sweaters, carrot and apple juice, reading vintage novels, and fantasizing about finally (hopefully) winning NaNoWriMo for the first time next month. :)

I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year too and I've never successfully finished a project, but fingers crossed that we both reach our goals this year!
