Hahaha I love this secret OP, relate to it entirely, and wish to subscribe to your extremely crochety newsletter XD

I certainly think the best thing to do in such a situation is to accept it and pass into the West and not to be an ass about it

I don't get this. It's normal to want to hang around people your own age. It's normal to want to engage in hobbies that bring you enjoyment. The idea that they should fuck off because they don't like new trends or hanging out with much younger people seems silly.

Fandom's part of my life and I'm not going anywhere. But after a weird experience in a teenager-dominated fandom earlier this year (the source media was targeted at adults so IDK what happened there), I've just decided not to engage with fans under a certain age anymore.

As someone watching a summary of Msscribe's antics from the previous fandomsecret thread...

It doesn't seem like a lot of new stuff? Puritanical posturing and those who claim "all stuff is fine it's all fiction" seems to have existed since the start of online fandom. The only difference is now it includes more knowledge about different types of prejudice.

Or are you talking more about the current fads like "imagine" fics. Which isn't current. Because I don't keep up with the currents.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, same. Just had some teenager trying to smear me into a predator because one of my ships is student/teacher. Christ, if you're that convinced why haven't you called the cops on me! See how a dumb fanfic holds up in court!

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol I definitely had that Skinner moment where I went, “Am I out of touch? No, it’s the children who are wrong”. And those kids will definitely grow up and feel that way too in the future.

It'll happen to you! - Grandpa Simpson

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who's been in fandom well over 20 years, I feel the opposite way. Nothing is new in fandom, lol. Things reoccur with palette swaps but in the end it's all the same stuff, and the younger fans think they're super brilliant and the first and only ones to ever _____ or care about _____ or think about _____ in some manner, but it never is that way

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. The SPAG is driving me mad, the plagiarism (of mine and others fics), the weird review culture. Half of the feedback is GYUNJICAPSLOCK, another half is weirdly self important. Like "I'd like it if this fic were longer". Now I miss FFN "pls next chap!" reviews for some reason. I also prefer my fandom to be without cursing if it's not in the source.
And what's the point of posting short fic on Tumblr? It made sense on LJ but it just gets lost on Tumblr.
The woke shit is also annoying but I don't get too much of it in my fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The cursing thing, totally. It's just about what's in character vs out of character. Some characters aren't going to use much profanity.

Gotta ask though, what do you mean by the weird review culture?

Oh, fics on tumblr annoy me so much - especially when posted without a cut.
Like... why. AO3 is right there. FF.net still exists. Just upload it there and then post a link on your tumblr if you want to have it there?

(Cozy werewolf anon)

As an over thirty, I am not sure how they fan anymore entirely. Lots of images on insta and tumblr? Okay. Yeah. I'm on Tumblr, but fic gets no traction there. I haven't posted any fic to ff.net in ages. Have a friend posting said fic I'm posting on tumblr FOR me on AO3. (I need to get an account, if only to chuck my random silliness on there. My old stuff can stay on ff.net and rot I guess.)

The attitudes cycle and the attitudes are also seeping into traditional publishing. I got into a discussion with a young 20 some author who INSISTED if you were going to write traumatizing stuff you HAD to have a sensitivity reader. And I'm going "You know, sensitivity readers STARTED in 2010 right, and didn't really pick up any traction until 2015. Many people don't know what one is or HOW to find one AND on top of it, you're attitude reminds me GREATLY of those who insist on making authors out themselves to write XYZ, which leads to CENSORSHIP, see Strikethrough 2006."

That didn't go... over... well. "I don't know about Strikethrough." Me: "Oh boy. Um. I don't have the spoons today for this."

So, I kind of just do me, in my own corner outside of commenting here.

I'm 33, and I think the problem is that as you grow and mature you lose patience for the things you either didn't notice as a teen or didn't know better than to do yourself as a teen. I know that my tolerance for bad or mediocre fic writing declined in a directly related proportion to the improvement of my own writing skills. In other aspects, it becomes extremely annoying to deal with unnecessary teenage drama over things that really don't merit that level of response. I have a fair amount of teens on my dash; sometimes I look at what they say or post and think "the kids are all right," other times I think "you're gonna have a real tough time of it when you go to college if this is how you interact with the world." I guess we all go through that and most of us come out the other side just fine, but it gets a lot more tedious to see and deal with after you really grow up.

For context, I was involved in fandom when I was 25 and now I'm a sometime lurker at 36. There are fandoms I'm excited about and want to chat about but I don't really get the way fans do their thing now. Just today I noped out of Tumblr when I saw a reply to some anon complaining about how the entire fandom was morally corrupt because everyone didn't speak out against one author writing a rape fic and I'm over here like, "You know they're fictional, right? I hate rape fics, too, but the author did not literally rape someone." It's just...so, so bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't change their mind anyway. So what was the reply to that anon?

Honestly same here OP. I've been blocking so many under 25s on Tumblr because they seem to generate the most pointless drama when all I want to do is look through the tags in peace and not wade through the third block-list and 'so-and-so did this that so bad/this is problematic BECAUSE' posts.

Not saying that over 25s never cause drama, but I've been lucky enough to not have to come across someone like that in my more recent fandoms.

Right now the thing that's giving me strong "I am too old for this shit" feelings is all these damn teens sharing their names and locations and selfies on the open internet and I'm just sitting here having millennial conniptions and going "Why! Do you want to be murdered??? Do you want to be abducted??? What the hell?????"

I remember there was a big deal last year on Twitter about teen fans causing drama because older content creators were starting to block them because they were underage or there was no date of birth in the profile.

And then it started to take off and although I don't create content or retweet anything considered adult in nature, i now check a blogs age before i follow and also block anyone under the age of 18-20

I'm 30 next year, i don't want to be seeing vague posts about high school graduation drama. I'm not about that shit anymore.

I'm just in my 20's, but I guess I can relate somewhat. Sadly I can't really help myself much by getting into Fandoms from media with 14-17+ target audiences.

I wish it was easier to find 18+/adult fandoms spaces; All you can do is 18+ your accs.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care about how young fans enjoy fandom, but I still avoid them because they are 95% more likely to start stupid drama.
I know it used to be a thing before too, but at least it was avoidable then, Now if you exist in a fandom space, and there is a drama, you have to be part of the drama, or both sides will think you're against them and hate you for it.

Yeah, same.

The whipersnapers can go have their fun with their friends, I will go have my own with people my age.

I have a legit theory over this, nonny. And I have to say- it's sadder than you think...
