"I wish I could have known about the view from halfway down"

From Bojack Horseman. That entire poem was devastating.

I'll never shut up about wanting an animated adaption of The Dark is Rising by Cartoon Saloon, the studio that did Secret of Kells etc.

I try to make damn sure my fics don't have errors like that.

I'll ... write it. Check it. Edit it. Check it. Edit it. Leave it a day or two so I'm not accidentally correcting it with my eyes. Check it. Edit it. Get a friend to check it. Edit it. Read it. Post it.

It's not even a big fandom I write for. Or particularly often. I just hate the idea of somebody thinking I'm stupid. Even if it's just fanfiction in a small fandom with unpopular characters.

Spent all of February deflecting responsibility of any kind. My depression is just consuming me, feeling so useless now that I'm jobless and going broke fast. Finally got things going today but it fucking sucked. I hate having responsibilities.

DA - Also, I'm pretty sure by the time she goes back (back to Jamie's time, I mean, not back to her own time) she's menopausal. They very much don't make the character look that old, but yeah, she is in fact late forties.

I mean, I still wouldn't be in a hurry to swap the relative comfort and safety of the mid-twentieth century for the fuck-all of the 1700's.

Just saying, specifically re: the birth control/childbirth situation, it probably wasn't a concern for her by the time she went back.

AYRT
That part always gets me too!! But as an adult the added knowledge of River Phoenix's career and too early departure hits my emotions really hard when Chris and Gordie say goodbye at the end.
Either way, I'm a complete mess at the end of the film. Even the final shot where we see adult Gordie with his son and his son's friend makes me super emotional.

By the time she almost gets raped by his ancestor, i think the damage had been done. Jamie had slowly been... inadvertently charming her, and she definitely tried to resist it at first. She def gave vibes that she loved her husband, but that it was a love slowly fading, withering away.

DA - This is why it didn't bother me, personally. I just feel like the groundwork was very much there to explain the tenuous state her and Frank's marriage was in at the start of the story. Like, they honestly weren't even sure they were going to be able to reconnect, they'd been apart so long. So to have the fragile tendrils of their reconnection shredded to absolute smitherines by crazy and traumatic time travel (and a dude wearing Frank's face who is a sadistic psychopath?). *shrugs* I completely understand why Claire felt like there wasn't much left to hang onto from her marriage. And I don't say that as a shipper. I was honestly very neutral on the Jamie/Claire relationship throughout the seasons of Outlander I watched.

But I didn't realize she had made a choice to go back. I mean at that point just divorce your husband (if it was allowed) and call it a day.

I mean (SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS) Frank was dead when Claire decided to go back for the second time. Plus they'd been separated before that, which iirc was Frank's decision because he'd gotten serious about someone else.

And IDK about in the books, but from what I recall, in the show she only stays with him because he all but begs her to, can't have biological children of his own and wants to be the father to her child, and she's pregnant and it's the forties which makes being a single mother a pretty horrifying prospect.

IMO the TV series felt quite fair to Frank. I never felt like the was the bad guy (except one moment where he very nearly strikes Claire when he finds out she's pregnant with another man's child, but he stops himself and never does it again that we see, so like...eehhh?). However, it does sound like the book is a lot more intent on outright character assassination for Frank because only Jamie is allowed to possess winsome qualities. *eyeroll*

Mine's really dumb, but I need five more cents to get free shipping and I can't find anything to bump up my cart. It's driving me nuts.

I'm not in any obvious danger feom covid but oh boy I feel that.
Even if my chances for a bad case are low, I DONT WANNA RISK LONG COVID FFS or infecting anyone else

I already had half a year of low grade permanent fatigue after having had mononucleosis. No thanks, dont wanna try what covid could do to me.

In the same vein goes my annoyance with MEDICAL PERSONAL REFUSING TO GET VACCINATED either at all or to be nit picking about the vaccine. NO astrazeneca isn't worse, TAKE WHAT YOU CAN.

I am listening to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger right now and I haven't watched this video because I don't want things to be over, rip.

What is that thing where your brain expects a word and automatically finishes it for you without actually registering the exact word? This secret had me cruising along until 'speled' and then I was like 'wait, what?' and went back.

(I gotta admit, they had us in the first half)

I used to be a copy editor for a newspaper when I was in college and the work was a slog of hell. Bless Beta readers (who don't try to take over the plot as part of their 'job').

Oh, things I didn't know I needed until I needed them.

The Dark is Rising Sequence was my entire childhood and I will never stop wishing for an adaptation. (That rot they made before was NOT an adaptation.)

oh god, the author's interviews. basically the rape is there for the sole purpose of testing their relationship - because HOW ELSE can you possibly know if it's the real deal /s

I've found one thing that helps me with so much re-editing is... change the font away from your usual. EG, I prefer reading in Times New Roman. If I highlight all and change it to / edit in Verdana, that's enough of a visual dissonance that I'm more likely to notice any errors.

And/or -- I post it in my DW, under a 'private lock', and read the preview to catch errors. Again, it's just different enough from my writing doc that it's easier to notice those little slip-ups.

If anyone was going to spend money on so many CGI dragons, I would prefer it if they spent it on Temeraire, but I too, spent a lot of time in my teens reading both Pern and Valdemar novels, so I get the sentiment.

Eh, James Herriot was administering them as a vet before the war. His description of what it was like is marvellous.

Nothing wrong with idfic but she was writing fanfic while calling out ficcers. It's even worse when you consider that she was writing RPF.

For me, 8 didn't have enough dynamic within the con. There are parts of planning or carrying out a heist that give an idea of character and relationship and there was weirdly little of that. Even 12 had some of that, even with the fake twist.

I agree with some of this, mostly that people cared about the relationships stakes with 12 and 11, and somewhat 13 and I think that was my problem with 8; there was no relationship stakes.
