151 I think I saw you posting on /a/. Big deal, I don't have every album by a Japanese band that's extremely obscure pretty much everywhere outside of Japan, and has existed for years. I knew who eastern youth was in 2000 way before anyone in the US outside of Los Angeles had heard of them. I could look down on you for either not knowing about them, or not knowing about them before they did their split EP with Cursive (who sucks, by the way).

tl;dr I could beat you at your music elitist game, but I don't look down on people for not knowing good bands exist

If I recall correctly (and I'm no inside authority on the subject, but I happened to acquire a fondness for that pairing around when it first popped up, so I think I have a good idea of how it got started) it kind of cropped up accidentally in spring '05 when

blue_phlox posted a couple of pieces of art that they'd randomly drawn of that pairing to

lower_tadfield, and

air_and_angels wrote a mid-length fic partially inspired by said artwork. Around the same time a pair of roleplayers who'd just started playing Famine and Pollution in a general fandom rp stumbled across the same art and ended up being inspired by it to incorporate the pairing into their roleplay. They posted a fair bit of F/P fic to lower_tadfield and it just kind of snowballed from there.

I think back in the day people generally read that first fic and the rp, started to like the pairing, and wrote their own fanfic? So it's probably mostly a matter of people happening to like the way the characters and their (yes, absolutely) canonically nonexistent relationship were developed in fic and fandom in general and getting into the pairing from that. (Although I'm sure some people are just in it for the nubile men.)

/tl-dr
Yup, it's a totally fanonical pairing that kind of accidentally snowballed into existence. No doubt certain fanfics happen to push the buttons of some people (me of four-years-ago, for instance) and made them acquire a fondness for the pairing, and for others it just doesn't turn their crank. Different strokes for different folks and all that. I hope no one's jumped on you for wondering about the relative popularity of this pairing though. (I love the pairing, but it *is* totally random.)

Incidentally I haven't been in GO fandom for years so maybe the F/P fans are totally different now and this is of no interest to you? All I have to offer is how the pairing pretty much got started. :)

110, I do the opposite, I call the characters by the actor's name, all the time. Or I'll use a character name from a different movie/series, and that gets all sorts of confusing.

I can't say I share your exact opinions, since I fell in love with Jill from the start, but I can say that he's really fun to RP as (I do, in two places), and there's nothing wrong with liking him. I'm kinda glad the backstory wasn't tragic too. It fit the canon I'd had in my head for them: stereotypical competing siblings. Hehehe.

But seriously, man, I'm so so so happy their backstory was typical (albeit, extremely messed up) siblings. If it had been horrendously tragic (ie: Siel killing everyone Bel loved (...lol), or... or something like that), I might have just put down the manga. It's refreshing to have a psychopathic guy just... not have some long and complicated reason, for once.

Actually, I think that The Gunslinger is the hardest to get through of the Dark Tower series. I only pushed myself through it because I was told it gets amazing after that.

That said, I just gotta wonder what you were thinking when you expected Bel to have an tragic backstory. Dude, the one page of backstory we got was the most lolarious thing ever. And even before that, it's obvious that Bel never forgot his brother or his past, and had absolutely zero amount of emo over it. From what we see in the one-page-flashback, Belphegor and Rasiel were equally insane as children, so I don't think Rasiel actually gave him a reason to be insane -- they're just fucked up and always have been, which is awesome -- but he definitely gave him the crazy-freakout-over-blood bit to his batshit insane mode. But even early on you can tell that Rasiel gave Bel a bit of his crazier crazy, and that Bel didn't feel sad or regretful or solemn about killing him at all. "Killing a cockroach" indeed, lmfao.

... Still gotta say, though, Rasiel is butt ugly. I'm sorry but he is. I'm alternately amused and disappointed. NOT SEXY TWIN IS NOT SEXY though the floating pimp throne makes up for it a tad. :D Also I can't hate Fran because I'm 99% sure by this point that s/he's Phantasma, so uh. Also s/he totally grew on me with the "magical pose" bit.
