Made an appointment to get my first covid shot tomorrow. Hopefully I have a mild reaction since I want to get my raised garden bed fixed up this weekend.

IA, I really feel this about Jack Whitehall too. There comes a point where the interaction becomes more about them milking the other person's responses for laughs and that just hits all sorts of sour notes for me.

Michael Palin never tried that shit, his travel stuff was always deeply respectful of the people and places he went (as far as I could tell). That's what I want out of a travel program.

Dude, do it. So what if Disney did it first?

I'm sorry anon, I hate fill. It's secondhand embarrassment city for me.

I hope so too. For me, my reaction to the first one was very mild, just a little bit of arm pain. It was the second shot that gave me a strong reaction. Hopefully the first one isn't too bad for you.

It's been a pretty good day. Someone I love who has depression has decided to reach out for help. They have meds, they are going to get counseling, and today they even talked to me and asked if I would be willing to do a couple of things regularly to help them out, which is great. I'm just... Overjoyed really. And relieved.

I hadn't heard anything about this till now but I agree with you.

In this case in particular it's a real shame because they had so much room to make a twist and still have it be a straight play on ACD's universe.

What is their primarily Chinese-inspired fantasy going to do for SEA, reinforce white people's notion that all Asians are Chinese?

There was one point in my life where I watched it basically every day, I think because I'd just got in from work and it was easy to have on in the background.

Your secret is basically why I stopped watching it. It got boring and not even trying to find the pointless answers interested me anymore.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't heard of this until now, but honestly I'd be kind of okay with it? Holmes plus supernatural has been done before, I don't object to it, and given that this would otherwise be a lower-decks look at Victorian London, I might honestly be okay with a bit of fantasy to leaven what would likely otherwise be a bit on the grim side. I mean, I've watched and enjoyed both Ripper Street and From Hell, but a 'darker take' on Holmes-era London does tend to lean towards 'unrelentingly grim'.

I agree. Honestly, I just don't think modern film and TV writers are that skilled at character writing. Jump back even to the 90s and like the characters are so strong.

Now they're just poorly conceived and executed, and honestly I think most of their depth and potency arises from fandom building fanon around them.

The trailer implies that Watson and Holmes are going to be the villains, taking credit for the Irregulars hard labour and I just...

Disemboweling a loved canon character and saying, Ta da! They're a bad guy now! isn't nearly as cool as some writers seem to think it is.

So maybe it's just the trailer, and maybe Watson and Holmes get unpacked and deconstructed in ways that have some actual bearing on the ACD stories.

I'm just... not filled with anticipation to find out.

I was about to say something like this but also I'm sure there's been loads of times where I've got vibes that the locals are snippy with him in return. Probably just part of the act as well but I've visited plenty of places where OTT smiley idiot grin "kiss the customer's arse constantly" service isn't the norm and the people serving you are more reserved. They're still nice and friendly of course, but it's a different atmosphere and in those cases might come across as both Richard and the servers are being rude.

I'm pretty sure the major demographic for this show is the lonely elderly.

I've been keeping up my new year's resolution that's basically "do six hours of set activities a day" but man it's been hard this week and particularly hard today.
I've got an explanation on my journal but basically I'm experimenting with a very flexible version of my hight school timetable where I decide what "classes" I take every week and I wonder if it's time to give myself a holiday.

Polenta with mushrooms for dinner, then some puzzle video games afterwards.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? That's very disappointing.

Awww! Glad they did that and best of luck to them.

ayrt - What's your argument here, that nobody should write any more media featuring Chinese culture in case ignorant white people can't figure out there are lots of Asian cultures?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Michael Palin is a gem, I loved this travel shows and books.
