Slightly OT, but I know the exact vibe you mean. I've always gotten that vibe from Whedon too. Elon Musk also gives me this impression.

These days I pretty much don't trust anyone. I've decided to secede from humanity and wish I could become a hermit.

It's not strictly poetry as put to music, but the lyrics to O Fortuna are a trip. Carl Orff was having a bad fucking day when he wrote it. It's my favorite emo poem by far.

Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening by Robert Frost is my favourite ever poem.

Time and time again it's the people who make the worst first impression on me that later leave with the best lasting impression. Basically, I've learned to give 'open jerks' the benefit of the doubt - though socially distant to the point that they read almost misanthropic, they often have good hearts once they finally grow comfortable around you.

That sounds like a sweet experience!

Since you mention Elon Musk, it bums me out that I love Tony Stark but I would probably find him just as insufferable as Elon Musk if he were a real guy.

I like it. I think that if it came out now I wouldn't enjoy it as much, but Leaves of Grass came out 160 years ago and it was groundbreaking.

Amen. I think about this kind of thing a lot. Social media has changed so much over the 15 or so years I've been in fandom and now I just don't know where I fit into it anymore. A "calm, insular fandom experience" is literally all I want and I don't know where to find it. Everywhere I go it's discourse this and drama that. Especially because my current main fandom is a kpop group, so it skews pretty young, and most people don't know what fandom was like before Twitter and in some cases, even before Tumblr.

And, like, I get that there have always been inter- and intra-fandom wars and wank, and admittedly I'm probably wearing rose-tinted glasses to a certain extent but I feel like with my first fandom, I was so lucky - we had our own little LJ community and we all respected each other and I don't remember any major drama going down. I just want that again. :(

I think that's partly why I've come back to F!S after several years of not being around (and was very pleasantly surprised to find it still active). I don't know most of the fandoms that are talked about anymore but I feel like we're all of a "generation" of fandom that maybe none of us are quite ready to say goodbye to...?

AYRT Oh same. :( I mean at least Tony Stark gets a reality call and tries to change, in the films at least. I think the problem with Elon Musk and every single other person like him is that they already think they're Tony Stark the superhero, whereas in actual fact they're the POS spoilt obnoxious arrogant rich boys that Tony was before he got kidnapped.

Are we talking about people who don't want to hear ANY critique of their writing at all, or people who think that *unsolicited* critique of people's writing is rude and fic readers should never do it? Because if the first one, then yes, I agree, it's irritating to see people complain about both.

But honestly, I've never seen a fic writer complain about the first thing; I've only seen fic writers complaining about the second thing, and people getting really pressed and angry when a fic writer complains about unsolicited criticism, and I really don't get why they get annoyed. It makes perfect sense to me: people should seek out critique, but it doesn't have to be the critique of randos on the internet.

Oh man, there are so many characters that I love but I just know that if I couldn't switch them off when I wanted to, I would just despise them.

It's a fandom cliche at this point but Richard Siken.

Same nonny. That's the experience I crave too. And I think you're right about us all being an older generation.
