What bothers you more and more with each passing year as you grow older?

Inspired by today's Secret #7.

The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who not including Paul McGann.

Also that one tweet response from JK Rowling about children shitting themselves and magic-ing away at Hogwarts.

I’m still bothered by the fact that Tom Baker was the only one in the special. I wanted the other actors who played the Doctor to be included in some capacity as well, included Paul McGann. And I may be just a tad bit salty because Seven is my favorite Doctor from that era and Sylvester McCoy wasn’t in it.

Not being able to sleep whenever and for however long I want. You'd think I'd be used to it by now but no, I resent having to wake up every day to go to work or perform house chores more now than ever before.

I'm retired and it is a wonderland of spontaneous naps.

So you have that to look forward to.

People thinking "you don't know what you want" is an okay thing to say.

Besides having more and more hair where it shouldn't be and less and less hair where it should be?

It's getting harder and harder to find enjoyable things among the absolute deluge of new shows and films. I think I liked it better when there were only 10 or so shows on TV (we only had three TV channels), so I could easily check them all out and choose the one I liked best.

Yep, same to the hair thing. I'm so jealous of people with a thick head of hair.

That I was never able to actually finish a degree due to unrestrained undiagnosed ADHD, thus crippling my ability to get a decent job, and I'll be stuck in retail forever, too poor/too tired to afford going back to school. I don't even know what I'd do if I did. I wanted to be a geologist? wtf do geologists do.

Re: What bothers you more and more with each passing year as you grow older?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, I say this from personal experience: you absolutely do not need a degree to get a decent job. What you DO need is skills/experience, but you can get those from plenty of places that aren't college, and you can do it on your own terms.

I feel this. Pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD and it's fucked me over time and again in my life. Oof but I feel you nonny.

Injustice of all kinds. And the fact that so many Americans just don't care and thing a self-centered worldview is a good thing. The fact that so many people deny the racism, sexism, and classism that are so obvious in our society. The way people can defend horrible actions like police shooting and killing unarmed black people. The way people continue to vote for the party that doesn't even care about them unless they are rich or business owners. Even someone totally self-centered should be able to recognize that Republicans only help the upper parts of society, and if they aren't part of that, they aren't going to get benefits for their vote.

I do not understand why so many working class people voted for the orange fucky fuck. He didn't even pretend to give a shit about them.

Please nobody take this as indicative of The Ace Experience as a whole, because it very much isn't, it's purely my personal experience, but--

Being ace/aro. I'm so lonely, and I'm so scared of being alone when I'm old. I want to be in love and have sex and be physically intimate with another person. I want that type of companionship and intimacy in my life more than anything. But for some reason my stupid brain just isn't capable of feeling those things for anyone. It never has been and I have no reason to believe it ever will be. And I just can't understand how someone can develop neurologically in a way where they have the appetite for a thing but not the means to satisfy that appetite. Like, I know life isn't fair, but what the fuck?

Re: What bothers you more and more with each passing year as you grow older?

*waves* you beat me to it! I know plenty of ace and aro people just are, but I spend too much time wondering how much of my being ace is due to only experiencing negative stuff about sex--not in a purity culture way, but I hit puberty at 11 and got mockery from my peers and propositioned by much older creeps, but I basically never had age-appropriate sexual or romantic experience with anyone. I can think someone is attractive and kind and funny and even "wouldn't it be nice to be with them?"

But my brain's answer is always "NO."

The idea of sex in the abstract is fine, I don't think it's wrong or disgusting, but the idea of having sex or even being in a non-sexual relationship myself is panic inducing. And as for fearing dying alone, I only have one sort of friend my own age and a couple relatives in their 70s.

It sucks and is terrifying.

*hugs* and solidarity.

I feel this to an extent. I’m not scared of being alone exactly (I feel more resigned than anything), but I get very sad sometimes because what I want out of a relationship is something I can’t have. Well, maybe I can have it if I meet the right person, but it feels impossible. I’ve tried dating, but when I told the people I was dating that I was ace, they started treating me differently and distancing themselves. One assumed I had some sort of trauma and offered to help me find therapy, which was nice, but it made me feel angry at myself because why can’t I want what everyone else wants? Why is my brain programmed like this and why can’t I fix myself?

Yep. I would like to have a kid but I don't think it's possible without a partner and I just... don't do that.

How my life so far is basically a series of traumatic events exacerbated by Marianas Trench level self-esteem and executive dysfunction. I'm anxious about everything, can't keep my house clean or anything organized, have no close friends, and I already have a full time job so unless I win the lotto I won't and don't have time for the full time job that would be getting the diagnoses, therapy, and meds I'd need to do more than tread water.
