115 Ugh, STFU about Hetalia already. I think it's insulting that you need a comic to spur you to do historical research. What ever happened to just researching a subject out of genuine curiosity? We get it. You're shallow fangirls who need "hot" guys (oh excuse me, I forgot the handful of"cute" girl characters) to get you interested in history. That isn't anything to brag about. And I don't even have a problem with the people who are in it for the slash and the male characters or whatever. I hate the people who think that telling everyone how much they really really care about history will somehow "make up for" the fact that they're in it for OMG BISHIES. I think that makes you look ignorant and shallow. Seriously, it's a gag comic. Stop trying to make it out to be something more profound than it actually is.

Rage all you want, I'm beyond giving a shit about your opinion. It's fucking funny how defensive you guys are, anyway.

121 DO NOT WANT

123 Well, that's not the only reason I'm watching it, but I do hope that they reunite.

125 You should be ashamed.

138 DO NOT WANT

152 If I ever got to wear one of those uniforms to school, I would love to. However, every school uniform I ever see isn't cute at all. They always look dumpy or too plain. Not to mention that the public school district instated standard school attire a few years ago, which basically translates to "wear a polo shirt and khakis to school" instead of actually, you know, mandating students wear a real uniform.

158 I think it's funny that whenever anyone's offended, Hetalia fans are like "LOL it's just a gag comic, don't take it so seriously" but then whenever anyone assumes that Hetalia fandom is all about lolz and bishies the fandom snaps back with this "WE DO HISTORICAL RESEARCH IT'S SRS BUSINESS" bullshit. I would be inclined to agree with the fans that say that it's not worth getting offended over if it wasn't their sole introduction to history and geography.

173 It was just your typical teenage self-loathing yaoi fangirls ruining the entire fandom. If you don't believe me, just read some of the old listserv posts (if they still exist). I mean, damn, I was only 16 at the time but the fandom turned me off to the whole series and Gundam in general for the longest time. And I never understood that whole thought process in yaoi fandom of "we have to hate the female lead character." I never had a problem with yaoi or slash itself but the inherent misogyny of many of the fans really turned me off to it altogether for the longest time.

Seconded to the nth degree! You summed it up better than I could. 125 pisses me off for the same reason.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Who cares why someone likes history? Why is this such a big deal to you? Every Hetalia secret that comes up you're sitting there spazzing away, horrified at the idea that an entertaining (to its fans, lest you get so terribly offended by the idea of Hetalia being entertaining) series with attractive characters provides a gateway to learning more about the world in general.

Gee, I guess if someone doesn't have the purest of motives, they might as well not do anything.

I care if someone gets into any subject because of cute guys.

Re: 115

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? It's really none of your business why someone likes something, and judging a wide swath of people on something you only think is the root cause is even ruder.

Whether I like Hetalia because I like history, like the humor, or like the cute guys, it doesn't really matter if it expands my horizons.

Because a woman being interested in a subject over TEH CUTE or TEH BISHIES is an embarrassment to the entire gender. Sorry if you disagree, but that's how I see it.

115. I love this so much... because this is exactly how I felt. I mean... I don't mind that they like it as long as they're honest about what they're in it for... the history element is bull. You can like history before and be intrigued by the concept (when I heard the premise it could have been cool until I actually saw what it was and got so dissapointed)

buuuuut... To be fair Carmen Sandiago got me into history back in the day =B lol.

[identity profile] panzer-knight.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
FUCK YES CARMEN SANDIEGO. <3 That might've been an inspiration for me, too. And I don't that as nearly as bad considering you actually do learn historical facts from it.

P.S. I never caught Carmen. In ANY game. :(

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
What if they ARE being honest? It seems that you want them to fit a certain box and if they don't they're lying.

That sounds unfair, isn't it?

And it isn't for everyone like everything else in media. So you hate it, doesn't mean what you feel is fact.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think people are even honestly into history because of Hetalia. They're into researching aspects of WWII for fandom purposes, maybe. And it's not like WWII/European history = having a true interest in history. That's the same shit that millions of Americans passively watch on the History Channel all the time.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually there already been fics that went out of WW2 and Europe. Hetalia, believe it or not, covers more than WW2, y'know. Not that learning a certain part of history is wrong since there are historians that specialize in a certain part of history. Even if for fandom purposes, they are still learning something out of it. They are learning history as much as it seems to pain you.

It not like History Channel doesn't do their work either although it usually spurn me to research certain things.

A book isn't the only way to learn about something, sorry to say. Even upper college level courses aren't immune to use other media to reach their students.

173 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That was pretty much my conclusion too, in the end, and the reason I left the fandom. When the crazed misogynistic interpretation drowns out the actual canon character? Yeah, it's time to book.

Also, misogyny in slashdom sucking: word. :(

[identity profile] kimchiburger.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
115. I really don't understand you. People are learning about something because of a series. And you're bitching about how they want to research for a series? Goddamn, my friend was interested in go because of Hikaru no Go and you'd bitch at her for trying it out because of the show? If I decide to look up psychology after watching Monster, you'd yell at me for not having the interest to begin with? I'm sorry most people don't have the ~PURE~~~*~*~ love, motivation, and genuine passion for history as you do obviously, but there's absolutely nothing wrong for people enjoying it through a series they like.

I think your opinion would have more impact if you haven't been acting all butthurt about Hetalia ever since the wank began. Sorry to say.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. In fact, my psychology major within me is utterly baffled because this is a common thing for people to get into a certain subject because of a show or whatnot. I mean, if someone got interested in psychology because of Evangelion or Monster, good for them (personally, while I wasn't into Eva all that much, I could understand if people research on psychology because of it). Personally, I did it because I'm the type of person people go to for talking and giving advice and the human mind is an extremely fascinating thing.

Although admittedly, I should've gone so deeply into Cognitive Psychology. Maybe I could avoided the dreaded class that is Psychology of Language (despite I wrote a subject heavily related to it as my senior thesis LOL).
ext_81845: screencap of dusty attenborough with a thoughtful expression, also STUBBLE, from legend of the galactic heroes (think it over)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Those series had something else going for them, though. (Like an in-depth plot, for one thing.) Hetalia is just a gag comic with a bunch of cute guys and some token random cute girls thrown in. It's not any deeper than that and most people seem to be into it for the slash aspect (which I don't have a problem with).

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Eva doesn't have much of a in-depth plot than being Anno's cry for help.

Hetalia is gag humor, it's not going to have a plot most of the time, but it seems have surprisingly fascinating characters for a gag humor comic and occasional serious strip as well. Laugh at that as much as you want to.

Maybe some are, but stop acting like it's the only reason. You hate it and that seems to cloud your judgment more often than not.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't read any of the main chapters, did you?

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
115. I don't care about Hetalia in the slightest. But I'd say it's pretty damn awesome when people do research for a fic and end up getting interested in a subject. Or you can keep on insisting people only get into intellectual pursuits for the right reasons--hey, there'll be a lot fewer knowledgeable people out there, but who needs them?

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
115: I'm sorry you feel that way. ):

152 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Khaki's and polos? Eek. In my area (my school is one of many private schools in my area), only the boys schools wear that. All the girl schools have skirts. I'm glad my school has taste at least. XD However up until the late 90's girls in high school had to wear a uniform shoe. It was flat, brown, and had tassels on it. Thank god I never had to wear those.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
115. Y'know, I could give two craps about Hetalia, but "I think it's insulting that you need a comic to spur you to do historical research. What ever happened to just researching a subject out of genuine curiosity?" kind of bugs me. There's nothing wrong with being inspired to learn more about any given subject because of a comic, book, movie, tv-show, or whatever. I mean, something has to trigger that interest, and sometimes the way the subject is taught in school isn't quite enough to catch interest.

So if someone does actually start studying history on their own, does it really matter if it was because of a "profound" book, a good class, a history channel special, or just a gag comic? The point is, they're making an effort to learn.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you know that you don't sound any better than those small subset of fans you're raging about. You don't know me so back off.

And sorry because you have a history major and the subject alone helped you get in doesn't give you the right to generalize a fandom and make it a fact. Sorry to say. Just like I don't have the right to belittle every Eva fan for getting into Psychology for the show and I got into that subject because I wanted to understand how people tick.

And for the last time, MOST fans get that it can offend others. But you seem insistent to ignore that.

Seriously, while 158 can be offended, you just need to chill in a corner for a bit.

lololololol

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Lol at all of the butthurt Hetalia fans bawwing about your comment. Shit, someone thinks your fandom is shallow?! OMG I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS HOW DARE YOU.
karel: (makie; because I am)

Re: lololololol

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-02 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they ever said it was particularly deep (well, some have, but some =/= all. "Hetalia fans" is not a monolithic entity of unified opinion). They're more upset that [livejournal.com profile] childings is setting rules as to who can be in his/her sandbox. Some of the people taking offense aren't even Hetalia fans. It's illogical to tell someone to stop trying to educate themselves just because you don't approve of what spurred them to do it. Even if they only learn a little about a specific area, they're that much more educated for it. I really have a hard time seeing this as a bad thing.

It's like telling someone who has to fulfill a multicultural requirement at college in order to graduate (as in, they wouldn't normally take this class) that they shouldn't take whatever class they pick because "their reasoning is shallow." No matter what their reasoning is, they'll come out with that much more knowledge and probably be at least a little bit of a better person for it.

The More You Know and all.
