Seconding all of this. Including tagging for Major Character Death. Or having something in the A/N that's basically like, "Yo, this is not a happy fic, I used the Chose Not To Warn tag for a reason y'all."

You have the right not to tag for MCD. But your readers have the right to decide you're a dick and not read your fic anymore, and a lot of them will, if you smack them in the face with MCD because you're like...a libertarian about fucking tagging.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad to hear you say this! I too do not understand what could be difficult about tagging. I mean, it's really, really intuitive. Tag the key elements of your fic. Especially tag anything that might be triggering or substantially upsetting. And if you're not sure a particular tag fits your fic, make your own tag(s) that do fit!

I want to second this, even though I do find him generally attractive as Doctor Strange, as well. But yeah, S1 Sherlock was the only time I was more than vaguely drawn to him.

Oh God, same. I'm pretty sure Frodo is responsible for almost all of my whump kinks

I love that book!

It's also very Tim Powers-y.

Re: Coffee vs Iced Coffee vs Caffeine alternative?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I like hot coffee okay, but strongly prefer cold when it isn't chilly out.

Iced Capps from Tim Hortons are the love of my life. Mocha Coconut Iced Macchiatos from Starbucks are AMAZE, but they're also like $6.50, so I hardly ever get them. Sugar Free Vanilla Iced Coffees from Mc Donald's are what I get when I'm trying to be low-cal and low-cost.

And when I've had enough sugar for the day, plain black iced coffee (home made, and not too strong) is pretty good.

I also enjoy the 'plain' or 'regular' or otherwise unflavored version of most energy drinks. I know most people don't like them, but I genuinely think they taste good. Also, energy drinks actually help me feel less like death when I'm tired, whereas caffeine doesn't really do anything for me in that regard.

Also, something that the movie made quite obvious, but that a surprising number of viewers seem to have missed, is that Tony's support for the Accords is basically, "We should operate under oversight, and if sometime in the future we don't like what they're telling us, we can just renege on our agreement." Whereas Cap's position is, "I don't trust the oversight mechanism, so I'm not going to enter into an agreement that I'll then have to abide by."

I know this is too late for anyone to really see it but there you go.

I'm one of the anons with chronic health issues. It's eroded away at my friendships until a small core group has been left. I'm clinging on to those friendships with bloodied fingernails though.

My health has gotten worse this last year and as a result my friends have been getting a little distant. Now they're having a get together. I'm invited, but they're also inviting another friend of mine. But they didn't ask me to invite her, one of my other friends who has like no connection to her is going to do it... As far as I'm aware they don't know each other that well except through me. (Her and one of this other group were both my bridesmaids.)

It seems like such a weird move? And for some reason I get a very very strong impression of them trying to build the friendship group but closing me out.

I knew it was coming. I'm terrible with people anyway. It just hurts so damned much.

da

He brought two super powered criminals, Maximoff siblings, into the base and let them do as they want, namely fight his Avengers teammates.

He also lied to get into the Army. He was unfit to be a soldier, too sick to do his country any good on the frontlines.

Refusing to do anything during Sokovia's fall...

He rejected Accords and then got a wan full of amo in the airport in another country. He does what he feels is right without any consideration to the law and ordinary people.

I don't think that he betrayed Tony by not telling him about his parents because they were never friends in MCU. Steve had his secrets and used SHIELD's resources for his personal goals.

I've been mostly enjoying it so far. I do think it's very... tidy? in the way all the characters/plots tie together, but then, I'm a fan of the xanatos gambit pile-up, so ymmv.

Hey, anon. I'm sending you a hug over the web. I'm in a similar condition, and it's a shitty situation but you're not alone.

Try to hang in there, and focus on your health for sure.

I think it definitely applies to fanart. I also think you're probably embodying this; there's a good chance that your art is just fine, but you're also comparing yourself to the best artists in your fandom and falling short. (Which is what the two cakes thing was about where fic was concerned, too.)

And given the fairly terrible fic I have occasionally received in exchanges (not often, but sometimes), if an exchange allows art, I figure there's going to be a very wide range of artwork involved, too.

The risk of getting something that is just not very good is something that exchange participants really do have to accept. So is the risk of getting "thank you for drawing this" as a response because your recipient hated what you did.

Maybe try doing fests or bingo cards or something where you're not creating for someone, as a way to ease into it?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's what CNTW is fucking *for*.

If you don't want the risk of being smacked in the face with *any* of those required warnings--and I certainly understand if people don't--then don't read fic marked Choose Not To Warn.

Because that tag is perfectly clear.

If you read my fic, which I have tagged Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings, and you get bent out of shape because I didn't use archive warnings, the problem is not with me.

I'm sorry, anon. I hope it gets better. Do they at least know that you're struggling? I assume they know of the health issues, but the part about how it complicates things for you?

I'm hoping things aren't what they might seem, but I'm also not in your shoes. Not sure what to say, except I know how much it sucks to feel like you're being shut out of a group.

Re: Vent

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're inviting your other friend *because* she's your friend, and they thought it might be nice for you two to see each other as well as the rest of the group?

Or maybe they just thought she was interesting when they met her and want to get to know her better, and it's not actually about you?

Re: Vent

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, I understand feeling isolated due to chronic health issues, especially after everything the last year threw at pretty much everyone on the planet.

But you said it yourself - your friend group met this other friend at your wedding, and one of them was in your bridal party with her. That is a connection. It's entirely possible they hit it off with her then. Insisting they should go through you instead of interacting normally with a person they met and apparently liked just because you were the original point of contact is inappropriate and possessive. Assuming their not doing so is a sign that they're edging you out when you're also invited to the event they're inviting her to is verging on paranoid.

You need to take a big step back and start extending some good faith towards your friends, or you're going to alienate all of them.

Eh

My view is generally that it's better to try to make a reconstructive stab at American civic nationalism rather than leaving it to the far right. And I think the textual history of Captain America as a character supports doing so - that's also why it's not No True Scotsman imo, because the distinction being drawn is very present in the source material

Obviously this shouldn't preclude engaging with the historical reality of American misdeeds, in the source material or in general

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's pretty wild to see Cap's fandom be so bizarrely invested in his moral rightness. Like... maybe in the first movie? MAAAYBE in the first Avengers? But he's literally everything that's wrong with US imperialism AND in Civil War he was basically a libertarian icon. I don't think ANY mcu heroes are "moral" because the morality of those movies in general is at grade school level at best and completely bankrupt at worst but Cap is not some kind of pure symbol that shouldn't be tarnished. He belongs to the assholes just as much as he belongs to the fandom folks who choose to see the fanfic version of him written by fans, not canon.

I don't know why I bothered posting this here. I guess at least it was late and I didn't have even more people telling me that my sum up of a social situation they are not personally party to is wrong.

I guess it's not as bad as the thread I posted asking for advice about morning sickness years ago where everyone told me to just get an abortion. Guess everyone would be glad to know I lost the baby and my job in the end.

Really I should have just ended things then. I guess now is just as good a time to do so.

It is w i l d l y clear that the MCU takes ~WWII~ US behavior at face-value, and there is no version of that that isn't on the same line as far right reconstructive American nationalism. The basis of this from a CA standpoint makes this utterly frustrating: the bully that Steve first stands up to is literally complaining about US WWII propaganda in real time when Steve gets mad. There were good and bad political reasons to do so, but from Steve's perspective (which fits along with his justification in Winter Soldier to Fury that SSR actions were not out of fear by safety an actual WWII piece of propaganda used to justify Japanese internment camps and lmao, guess where those justifying propaganda pieces showed up!) none of those reasons could possibly be legitimate.

My point is really that it is no true Scotsman because the distinction drawn in the source material doesn't really exist in rl, and to some extent is a distinct obfuscation of the extant politics at that time and now, and worse some of the ethical choices Steve makes in the present are at their philosophical foundation not unlike the ethical choices the US makes in the present, just without state sanctioning. The oppositional framework to the US is not "intervention is bad" or "military paternalism is bad" or even "neocolonialism is bad" but that "the sovereign state is easily corrupt" which, while true, combined with his philosophy is distinctly the view that many of OP's assholes with CA shirts also take.

I do think this is because the MCU is gingerly trying to deal with the current nature of political and military conflict which does not reflect on the US well while also trying to preserve CA's "America-ness" with whatever values they think they can apply, partially so they can sell t-shirts, but as I've explained that doesn't work for a variety of reasons without justifying all the range of people who want to be CA.

eta: also there's something perverse about giving a superhero created by Jewish artists to a corp founding by an anti-semite to navigate US nationalism, my god I hate it here
