I go back and forth between "no such thing as too old for fandom" and "there is so much more to life than fandom, time to grow up." I think both are true, to some extent, so finding balance is key (and the hard part).

You are never too old for fandom, OP. Not ever. I’m pretty sure you’re going to get a chorus of the same opinion, because given a thread or three I’ve seen around here, you’re not only never too old, you are very much not alone.

Joining the chorus. I'm in my 40s, still cosplaying the "kid" characters with my friends because I'm the shortest in any given group and I don't look my age. (And I mean, we've all seen Grandma Rikku, right? Never seen anything but praise for her.)

I spent my actual childhood sick and miserable and didn't actually get to have an adolescence, and have no idea how much longer I have left - so at this point, I'm just going to do what makes me happy and ignore anyone else's opinion. (Caveat, of course, being that if whatever dumb thing I want to do would honestly bother someone rather than just being "silly" or "childish", obviously I would not do it.)

I know everyone's not so lucky to be in the position they can do that, whether because of their job or their family situation or they get a worse reaction to being "unconventional" due to bigotry, but man. When possible, I highly recommend doing what makes you happy for as long as it makes you happy. Life is too darned short and full of depressing crap to not hold onto the good stuff.

I don't think there is or there should be "too old for fandom." It's an outside perception thing we should ignore.

Are people ever too old to "fan" sports? Or too old to "Fan" I dunno, knitting or other hobbies?

Hobbies are ageless. And as a 30+ person, I enjoy talking with young people and older people. Gives the whole thing a sense of history.

I agree with everyone else that you're never too old for fandom, but that maybe the way you interact with it changes. Or it doesn't, but fandom itself changes. Or both.

I'll admit that in the past few weeks/months I've been having similar fears, that I was just getting too old. But I think it's just that I joined a new fandom/pairing and it's a bit of a mess and I haven't found my niche yet.

My little corner of fandom before that (one I'm still in) turned out to be full of people my age, with similar attitudes towards drama/ship wars/nonsense. All very chill.

I'm generalizing of course, but younger people tend to be more intense when it comes to fandom? At least in my experience. It can be exhausting.

In my experience, being in fandom communities where the prevailing opinion is that people are past their prime as soon they hit 25 fester thoughts like these. There are certain fandoms I feel entirely too old for cause their discords are full of kids talking about their math homework or sharing tiktok threads but those worries fade away entirely when interacting with fellow older fans, specially after finding out they share the same worries too. The answer here might be searching for more adult dominated fandom spaces (hi dw!), trying to meet people irl or even being a bit more open to the kids, since they can be welcoming in their own ways. Godspeed anon, fandom is a hobby and as long as you're enjoying yourself without hurting anyone, what's the issue with it?

Enjoy your harem, OP! I too relate to Kae, but it's the BL fangirl aspect that really speaks to me. Her fangirl moments hit a little too close to home and make me cringe 'cause then I remember what I was like when I was a teenager, but damn is it funny. Did you ever read the manga? The ending made me smile so much and I wish we'd get some OVA that showed it animated.
