Willem Dafoe gave an amazing performance in Netflix’s Death Note. The guy who played L was pretty great too with the exception of that final scene, but I blame the writing for that.

The performances of Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Richard E. Grant, and Ian McDiarmid (whose character shouldn't have been there, but he did a great job) in The Rise of Skywalker.

Honestly, I think most of the actors did a good job, they were just given unsalvageable garbage to work with.

Weekend Plans?

What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am visiting my sister for July 4th. My mother and nephew are also here and the rest of the family will be here on the 4th. Going to be stressful as fuck.

I want to have some sort of party with my best friend and his roommates but all I've got is a "we'll see" and some unreturned phone calls. And this is for the first major holiday since the covid restrictions are finally starting to get lifted?

I'll pick up my sister's boyfriend and drive him 1,5h to where he needs to be. Didn't ask why, but I guess he's going to see his kids from previous relationship.

Then I'll try to clean up my apartment, because it is a complete depression/hoarder hell hole.

I have spent all this week making multiple trips to the bathroom per hour or alternately lying face down stretched out because it is the least painful position, so I kind of suspect I will be doing the same thing this weekend. :/ Hopefully some shiny Tepigs will show up tomorrow while I am trying to play Pokemon Go in the bathroom or lying on my stomach. When I am able to lie down in a position where I can type, hopefully the current fic will start moving faster after an epiphany I had a couple days ago about how to tie it all together.

If I feel up to it, might be helping make some tweaks to the now fully-assembled shed and the mostly-assembled shelves inside (made of spare concrete blocks and the pallet the shed kit came on because we're thrifty like that).

Aww, hope you get some time to relax!

I’m gonna enjoy my three day weekend and do nothing except write self-indulgent fic.

Getting ready for new job that starts Tuesday. We'll be celebrating the 4th on Monday. Not sure what we are doing, but whole family will be there.

Tonight we are celebrating my new job, so we ordered Thai food.

I'll be watching either My Cat from Hell or Dr. Jeff, Rocky Mountain Vet.

I will hopefully be: reading more books (that I took out from the library two weeks ago) so that I can say that I read more than two whole books this whole year, drinking some tea and eating soup to stave off the cold I think I'm getting from the AC, catching up on films/shows in my Netflix queue, and trying to find a comfortable position to lay/sleep in/sit up straight in because whatever is to the left of my right shoulder blade is twingeing w/ pain when I move.

It's vacation time at my dad's place! I'll try to find a badass looking bracelet made of recycled bicycle tyre at the local market, and that's about it.

Oh, and I need to call my brother on the 4th--regular day in our country but it's his birthday.

Tips for motivation to work out?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen my memories on FB of when I tried fencing with longsword one time and have thought of picking it up for real this time. And just to make things even better, there's a group starting up in my "village".

The problem is that I've done the couch potato life for quite a while and I need to get into some shape before september. Do you have any tips to get going? Only hard limit is no running because my shins can't take it.

If you've found a workout that you can see yourself coming back to even when it's shit at first you already have a significant portion of the battle won, if you are decided on fencing then by all means you only have to show up to the group no matter what your condition is. Nobody who actually works out is an asshole to people getting started/going back to it and the social boost really helps to keep the streak going.
(Edit: Sorry, I reread your question and you mention the group starts in september! The second paragraph of advice still stands though!)

If you want other options then you can always start small and simple and go from there, going on daily walks with a podcast/playlist/audiobook you like (you can even have designated workout ones... I listened through a good portion of TMA to put me through folding laundry and it really helped). Don't be shy about trying new things as long as they don't pose a threat to your health, and don't force yourself to stick to a workout that you can't enjoy either. The two best motivators are 1) Finding a workout that you can have fun with / doesn't feel THAT bad and 2) Having an external boost to it of any type, but even better if it's social.

It genuinely gets easier with time and the effects are very much worth it. Good luck anon!

There are few things that have helped me get motivated.
1: Do something that is fun and you want to do. For me, it's hiking and taking walks with the dog. Especially listening to podcasts or music I love.
2: Have an appointment to work out. My dad works out everyday at 11 o'clock in his basement, no if's and's or but's. And, whenever I had a scheduled class or practice, it would get me to do my workouts.
3: A group. A irl buddy or group help but this does Not have to be in person. Follow a youtube workout channel (or dance channels are very fun) or the exercise videos on a streaming service.

And don't overdo it the first workouts! Everybody always does this and then burns out or hurts themselves. Either find a very simple, easy workout to ramp up from or do half a workout (for example, do half the reps in a workout video and take longer breaks.

Find a reason outside of 'I need to work out more' and that'll help. For example, if you enjoy nature or photography, you can use either of them as your second motivational starting point. Instead of 'I need to work out more' it becomes 'I enjoy watching the sun set so I'll go for a walk around that time' or 'I enjoy taking photos and sharing them online so I'll go for a walk to look outside for inspiration'. That kind of thing. Alternatively, if neither of those are your kind of thing, there's a myriad of other examples. 'I'd like to wear certain kinds of clothes' - so start collecting images of outfits from Pinterest or catalogs or whatever for things you'd like to try out over time. 'I'd like to have more energy' - start a journal monitoring what foods you react well with and use it alongside a journal that lists when and where you are doing your physical training. Be sure to reward your hard efforts too in some way. Promise yourself little presents as you work towards larger goals.

For motivation, think of working out as something nice you're doing for yourself, a gift to keep your body healthy and your mind sound. And take it from me: I was a couch potato with diagnosed depression, GAD, and a former pack-and-a-half a day smoker when I started working out, and after about a week there was a positive difference. I actually felt better, I felt like I had accomplished something just getting off the couch and going for a walk. I felt better if I worked out, my mood was better, I was happier, and as I kept it up, I got better physically and mentally! The trick is, as cliché as it sounds, to just do it. Just go. Take that walk. Lift those weights. DUDE TAKE UP FENCING, BE A BADASS! If I can do it, you can do it!

Fencing sounds AMAZING I HOPE YOU DO IT!!!!

I would start simple, OP.AND I mean simple. Start by picking a time in the day. Maybe before lunch, maybe after work, or something (you figure out which works best for you). And during this time, take ten, maybe fifteen minutes and go for a walk. Pace doesn't need to be brisk at first, but it's just a walk. Just to start getting your body used to moving. Start to employ a routine. After two weeks, i would start to employ YouTube videos. Got a dance/choreography you want to learn? Start trying. Got an instructor you want learn from ? Exercise sets, pilates, dance, yoga, whatever. But start doing that. Maybe get someone to hold you accountable-- did you actually spend twenty minutes on that routine? Etc..

Good luck!

Try to find more immediate reasons to want to work out. If you sleep better on nights after you've worked out earlier in the day, focus on that as a reason to want to get a workout in. If you feel calm and relaxed after a workout, really savor that feeling and work on internalizing it so it can motivate your future workouts.

And then, also, if you can, definitely try to find something you enjoy doing. That can be really tough if you're not a physical activity type person and/or you don't have a ton of money to throw at an activity. But it's definitely worth trying to find something you enjoy. I've been playing tennis lately (easier if you have a tennis partner admittedly), and even though I'm pretty bad at it, it's SO much easier to do it consistently than going to the gym ever was for me, because it's actually pretty fun. Whereas going to the gym was always a total "eating my kale" type of activity for me. I basically hated it.

Finally, my personal advise for all activities with a learning curve is to write off the first three sessions. Just assume they are going to suck. Then, if the activity continues to suck after you're no longer brand new at it, that's when you can start to surmise that maybe it's not for you. I mean, if you really, really hate it then I guess follow your instincts on that. But if you just hate it because you suck at it and don't know what you're doing yet, then that's very very normal.
