Nic Cage is a good actor but you only see his true talents when he works with truly great directors

I... I kind of agree? To be fully honest, the only performance of his I can recall actually liking is Mandy, that movie is what Ghost Rider should have been back in the day, only a decade late!

Yeah, I think his best performance ever was in Port of Call New Orleans, where he was - not coincidentally - directed by Werner Herzog, one of the greatest living directors.

NA - Personally I recall thinking he was good in both Lord Of War and Leaving Las Vegas. That said, I was like nineteen when I watched both of those, and that was a long time ago; present-me doesn't entirely trust past-me's judgement on such matters.

Best acting?

I know that can be subjective, but I would actually put American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson as best for John Travolta, with Pulp Fiction as runner-up, and as best Leaving Las Vegas (depressing as hell, but a good performance) for Nicolas Cage, with a bunch as runners-up (Raising Arizona, Moonstruck, Wild at Heart) - he does some fairly bizarre characters well. I'm not sure Face/Off even makes my top ten for either.

Neither of them are my favorites, but both aren't bad actors by any stretch of the imagination.

I miss old John Woo action films.

Face/Off is such a silly/fun movie, but I always confuse it with Conair.

I haven't seen a lot of Cage movies, but I recall Family man and City of angels, I really liked him in those.
He is like Jim Carrey for me in this regard: I'm not really into their humorous stuff; their "quirky" acting usually makes me see them as themselves rather than the characters, breaking my immersion.

However, when they do something more dramatic /emotionally honest I feel they can still retain their individual charm/quirkiness without it overwhelming me and/or giving me second hand embarrassment.

Good?

This is a good movie? The plot only works because every single character is an absolute moron.

For John Travolta films, this is at the bottom of the barrel, along with Broken Arrow and Battlefield Earth. Not sure which of the three is the worst, but it isn't the Scientology circle jerk.
