Re: 126, 151
(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 05:20 am (UTC)(link)I didn't know big-budget, hoped-to-earn-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ films were such insignificant things that you can dick around on them and give potentially-box-office-sinking performances in them. I didn't know all stars handle knowing the fate of the movie's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ hinges on them (and maybe the director) with grace and aplomb. I didn't know artists (any artist) are supposed to be a stable bunch.
And those who say "I could never act that way at work": you're not paid to act, period, you morons. I didn't know when you're in the middle of being all emotional you're supposed to switch it off like a light when someone pisses you off repeatedly.
FUCKING THINK, MAN
Re: 126, 151
(Anonymous) 2009-02-14 05:56 am (UTC)(link)Either he's just a "human" and this is how we all act when something frustrating happens at work, OR he's the stereotype star who gets special leeway to be unstable and throw abusive tantrums at people when they frustrate him because he's the artist. There's a reason the term "prima donna" started out as the principal female singer of an opera company and came to mean a temperamental person who takes adulation and privileged treatment as a right and reacts with petulance to criticism or inconvenience.
Re: 126, 151
(Anonymous) 2009-02-15 07:25 am (UTC)(link)Actors/actresses are allowed to lose their shit occasionally - and I'd bet cold hard cash that even the best have done it once or twice in their careers - because it's a completely human thing to do when you're in the middle of emoting to not have all your emotions under rigid control. And considering this all happened in an high-pressure situation, a frustrating environment, that better artists than him have gone on for much longer (Lily Tomlin, anyone?), and that he's paid to be emotional this is really nothing.
Re: 126
(Anonymous) 2009-02-15 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)The OP called him a prima donna. That term refers to the idea the artist star of the opera gets to be tempermental because they're the star. If somebody thinks he already sounds like a prima donna, I don't see why they'd change their mind if you explain to him that CB must not be judged the way they'd be judged if they lost their shit like that, because he's an artiste. Maybe "trying to have it both ways" was a bad way of expressing that.
Re: 126
And I'll try to "change their mind" - or rather, express my viewpoint - if I think that they, and a whole lot of other sheltered people, try to simplify the situation, because it's an idiotic thing to do. How naive do you have to be to think that people will never express their anger, especially if you do some dumbshit things to provoke it and prolong it? 'Cause the DP didn't apologize the whole time - he got defensive over his indefensible actions.
"Are you a professional or not?"
"Yes, I am."
*EHN!* Sorry, dude - the correct answer was, "No, I'm sorry, that was completely unprofessional of me." Why? 'Cause professionals wouldn't have bothered a scene while the actor is in the middle of it.
"You don't fucking understand what it's like working with actors. That's what that is."
"No, that's not what it is."
Wow - so diplomatic, so contrite, this guy over what he did wrong. Especially his next line!
"No, what it is, is looking at the light and making sure that everything – "
And then Bale really goes off on him. GEE I WONDER WHY. People usually calm down after you've made them mad when you tell them how wrong they are.
And I wonder why if Bale is such a godawful prick to work with, why haven't they released the first part of the rant, when the DP messed up the first time? Is it perhaps, I don't know, there is no rant? That maybe the DP was informed civilly to not do something any first-year film student knows not to do?
So if upbraiding a dipshit who know enough about his job to say "sorry" when the star gets mad at him after he fucks up royally the second time, but not enough to not make the elementary mistake to begin with and to try to justify it, is being a "prima donna" - "a vain or undisciplined person who finds it difficult to work under direction or as part of a team" (forgive me for going with the more universally interpreted definition of the word as opposed to your history lesson) - then I guess Bale is a massive one.
Re: 126
(Anonymous) 2009-02-15 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)The OP heard the apology and said she no longer thought he sounded like a jerk. Had CB put out a statement explaining how difficult his job is, and how the guy was completely deserving of the rant and being an actor is hard and didn't they hear how the guy was defensive on the tape instead of being more apologetic? I doubt s/he would have changed her opinion on him.
And btw, just to irritate you more, I don't know where you've gotten the idea that PM only means "vain or undisciplined person who finds it difficult to work under direction or part of a time" today. People still use it to describe performers throwing tantrums or demanding special attention all the time. I am not saying that Christian Bale is one. I can completely believe it was the result of special stress around that time and his being in an emotional scene.
Re: 126
Uh... so what? No, seriously - you do know I couldn't give less than a rat's ass about whatever the OP's stance is on everything, right? My annoyance is not centered wholly on the secret post, 'cause - and remember this is a point I've been emphasizing - there's a bigger picture.
And c'mon, dude - I know you're all proud of yourself for discovering the roots of words, but you really need to stop bringing up that one particular facet of "prima donna". Again, I couldn't care less.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-15 07:42 am (UTC)(link)MONEY*ahem* responsibility fall on one person in a position of authority inevitably produces people who have little patience for fuck-ups. For instance - if you come across a surgeon or someone from Wall Street who's polite and you're not a client of theirs, you can safely assume that it's their day off. Acting in sci-fi is, of course, more frivolous but I wonder who has moreresponsibility*ahem* MONEY riding on whether they do a good job or not....
