Fic Length and Pace

(Anonymous) 2021-08-21 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a fanfic writer who likes writing slow paced, detail oriented fics that really explore the world and worldbuilding. And I was curious. Are there readers that like that or am I driving off my readers with mx slow burn interest in detail?

What kind of fics do you enjoy? SLow paced? Fast paced? Worldbuilding heavy?

Reading something that really puts the time into how the setting works - and how that affects the characters - can be a deeply satisfying experience.

(That said, I mostly write short fic because I have no attention span. So I admire you very much, OP.)

Ah thanks! I'm glad to hear it. This is probably among the biggest fanfic project i've attempted

I'm a oneshot (<10k words) kind of guy. Honestly, I just don't understand the appeal of sprawling epics in fanfiction outside of fix-it fic or bridging gaps in the canon. It would have to be literally life-changing for me to invest in some 150k+ Omegaverse AU (not knocking A/B/O, just mentioning it because it tends to be very different from whatever canon a story is set in) because more often than not, I just want more of what's in canon. (Unless the story REALLY sucks.)

I will read anything if the themes are great. But I prefer more than 9,000 and less than 50,000 words. But I've read many epics. I prefer fast paced unless there is a ton of angst. I generally don't focus on world building since fanfic has world building built in.

Ah I see.

The canon information on other countries for this canon I found lacking and culturally ignorant in this case.

I'm guessing you're the Harry-Potter-In-North-Carolina-In-2005s Anon but that's just shooting the shit

I like plot. Lots of plot with surprises and reveals and character development and filling in holes in canon (sometimes that's worldbuilding, sometimes it's just "what happened offscreen that caused this other thing to happen onscreen?").

So while I can see the value in short vignettes, even drabbles (I used to go "wtf why even bother" until I joined some challenge communities waaay back in the day), and some people can do marvelous things with them, mostly I prefer long multichaptered fics, both writing and reading.

I like worldbuilding and I am in some fandoms whose canons were lacking in some way or another, so I like to worldbuild and patch things.

Honestly with any writing i have a hard time coming up with and remaining interested in short things.

Yeah, sort of the same thing here. I've been a really fast reader my whole life so under 5k is often not enough for me to really even sink into the story before it's over. Some people can do good short fics, and they're nice to just take a little break and see an idea someone had, but it's over so soon I feel like I kind of didn't spend any time "reading", if that makes sense.

And indeed, so many canons either skip over explanations of something, or the explanations don't make sense so you need further explanation... or it's clear that what you see in canon is just the very tip of the iceberg and there's a great deal of worldbuilding that's just mentioned once or twice (in my fave fandom, there are item descriptions. Some of them could be entire stories on their own) to be expanded upon. And that's the kind of stuff I like to write and read. =)

I like big fics, over 50k, regardless of focus.

However, I should say this: don't worry about getting people to like your work. Whatever you put out there, someone will love that stuff to bits, someone will hate it, and a lot of people won't care.

Make your fics as long or as short as you need. If you think they're bloated, you may want to recruit a beta reader.

Longer the better for me. I only generally read shorter than 50k if they're by authors whose longer works I enjoy. I usually prefer plot-heavy, detail-heavy stories and I love it when authors take the time to really dig in an explore them.

Ah that's great to hear, thanks! I'm very detail oriented in a lot of things. In the planning stage I tend to end up with information i may or may not use, but i like to know it.

It really depends tbh. I love a long plotty fic! But if there’s a ship and the burn is super slow I may not finish and instead save it for after I’ve read through everything else in that pairing. Although cat and mouse games for the ship are instant backbutton.

I don’t care much about worldbuilding in fanfic because the world already exists very vibrantly for every fandom I’ve read. But I love lore exploration and I LIVE for character studies. (Yeah, I know.)

But I need action, too. A case, a mission, a canon-typical event of some sort that makes me feel like I’m reading something that adds to the source material.

I see. I get frustrated with slow burn romance honestly.

Those are pretty fun to read. More often than not I like the settings more. Idk i'm weird like that.

I guess I do tend to be a little more excited for a story if it falls within the 20,000 - 65,000 word range. That being said, I have read a few really awesome 2,000 - 5,000 word fic and sometimes that's the perfect length for something just before sleep. I'm not sure if I've ever read anything under 500 words that was standalone that left me completely satisfied, feeling like that was enough. And sometimes it can be great to fall into a very long fic, especially one with interesting worldbuilding. But if it is much over 100,000 words, it has to be some premise that really grabs me.

I love slow build romance, but I do often like quick-paced action in the other parts of the plot, though not too breakneck that it's hard to keep track of everything.

I LOVE slow paced, detailed fic. While i prefer character building over works building, as long as it's relevant and doesn't feel like I'm slogging through the first chapter of The Lord of the Rings, I'm fine. Honestly, I'd be more attentive with dialogue sprinkled in... otherwise i kind of skim.

Slow burn and slow build with a focus on the characters and occasionally the minutiae of their interactions and day to day/relationships. The setting itself is only relevant to me if it's an AU/something about the world is a plot point in the story. Then I'm down for a bit of world building. I.e. a hunger games-esque AU, or a marriage law or A/B/O type of thing going on.

*nod* i getcha

I try to make it entertaining and enjoyable. I mean... idk , I do tend to write what I enjoy and just hope someone else does too?

Right now i'm doing a wizarding AU of an anime, so I'm developing wizarding Japan.

I love long, slow, thorough fics that take the time to really develop, and make you wait for things. Sadly, there's not that many fic writers who write those kinds of fics because, well, it takes a lot of effort and dedication and skill. But those fics are great.

Re: Fic Length and Pace

I love long fics. I will gladly read a 500k epic if it has a good plot. Details are great; I love getting into the nitty-gritty because I find that authors that have worked out the nitty-gritty have actually thought about the worldbuilding whereas some shorter fics sometimes get too hand-wavey and they lose me because their worlds don't make any sense.
But I will say, if it's that long it can't be too slow paced. I've started some long fics that I've had to back button because it was 5-10k on single emotional exchanges which I can do as a stand alone but 100k of that gets to be pretty mind-numbing.
