Who? What?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Names? Those are some very generic looking women.

I don't know the other one, but one on the right is Jenna Moreci, known for her writing tip videos. I don't really follow her, but I do remember that after her first book's release, readers were confused as to why she used the very same tropes she advised against. It made her look like a bit of a hypocrite...

I don't know her but she's very pretty

(Anonymous) 2021-09-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Meg LaTorre, who also does writing tip videos.

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me. Of course, I can be very cynical about these writing trope videos. Or trying to cater to the agent's manuscript wish list... or amazon key words.

I don't think this makes for good storytelling. If you love something and are passionate about it, write it. Who cares how many times it's been done before. You can solve problems in editing. Tropes serve a purpose. -goes off to grumble in old writer-

Honestly, as a writer I don't know why people act like tropes are the worst fucking thing in the world and if you're a 'serious writer' you never use them.

Tropes are things because they're popular. There's nothing wrong with writing or liking popular things.

When? Where?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
why?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh! Is that Jenna Moreci? Yeah, her youtube persona is kind of annoying, even if a lot of her advice is solid. I was surprised to see how critical her books' reviews on Goodreads were.

I suspect that if you set yourself up as the goodest of riters and then your book is mediocre then a lot of readers/reviewers are going to judge your work by a harsher standard than if you were just A. Nonny Mouse, rando writer.

... Thank y'all, now I'm going to have that scene from Spy Kids 2 stuck in my head:

Excellent.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
that line about papyrus made me laugh thank you

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What is up with the head-to-body proportions for the woman on the left? It's freaking me out.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, its just myspace photo angles

(Anonymous) 2021-09-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't neccesarily agree. You can analyze or notice things wrong with something even if you can't even do that. Like with weird anatomy choices. Or movies. Or practically anything that anyone reviews. And there are people out there better as editors than writers.

At the same time, I get the total rush that people who annoy you also just suck at the thing they talk about.

Ah, Meg, Jenna and Alexa Donne are the entire reason I try not to do authortube videos. (Yes, I have a youtube.) I haven't um, read their books. Meg, at least, used to be an agent. I like her the best? That's not saying much. Jenna is abrasive and blames her autism and err... doesn't know as much as she thinks she does. And Alexa is... grating. Maybe I should do a look inside on Amazon for their books. I just couldn't care b/c of their disdain for indie authors. (Even if Meg claims to be one? sort of. She super small press I think.)

The advice they give is really mostly good for super beginners. I couldn't relate. And yes, if you do authortube stuff people are going to judge your books more harshly. That's um, why I don't do authortube for the most part. (I have like 5 videos I think out of over 50. A copyright one inspired by Jenna's tumblr. Sigh.)

It's hard to be educational and not sound pretentious. At the same time, so much of writing is opinion outside of some technical skills. And it does go in cycles too alongside styles evolving. And the videos don't really recognize this.
