Why does FF.net get such hate? For a reader, it is much more intuitive an interface than Ao3's. Short of a web ring of personal websites, it is the best out there.

I'm of the age where using FFN was the place to be unless you went to smaller archives that have disappeared now. I still like the site and found my few frustrations something I could handle. (Disappearing scene breaks being the most of them, and then a few stripped punctuation marks.)

I still use both when I post my fics, not that I'm writing a lot of fanfic lately.

I feel sorry for people who are insecure about their abilities, but constantly seeking validation like that is really tiresome. That said, I think that comforting words and praise is exactly what they want and what they're clearly fishing for. I just would caution you to be careful going down that road because for a lot of insecure people, one comforting validation is never enough. You don't want to end up as someone's emotional dumpster, I assume.

I'd say if you want to commission them, commission them, explain what you love about their art and why you want them to create this piece of artwork, without mentioning their self-derogatory remarks. A commission should give them a nice boost, along with the compliments, and if you don't mention "i saw you were feeling low about your abilities" it won't come off as a "pity commission" (which it doesn't sound like it is anyway).

Eh. If this person didn't want comfort from strangers, they wouldn't be repeatedly tweeting in public about how bad their art was, etc. etc. You're more patient than I am. I would've unfollowed after the second such "woe is meeeeeee" tweet.

FWIW, there used to be a huge number of monsterfuckers on Tumblr who wrote character/reader and shared it with each other. So that’s a self-insert “fandom” that thrived.
