I went through something similar and the important thing is never to say anything remotely critical even if you think it might help or be construed as constructive criticism. They wouldn't be able to take it and resent you for it.

If you really have to read it, just skim through it and bear with it. I know it's not that easy but if you really want to keep the friendship, I think you have to.

I DID IT! I TALKED TO THEM AND THEY WERE VERY NICE. I spoke to them on my story and then read one of theirs that I actually kind of liked a lot and left kudos and a comment and we chatted for a bit and I was like 'I know people have been mean to you before but never stop writing okay?' and they said 'I will never give up!' and I'm just like :'D

Oof, I love starting scenes in media res and then backtracking, but you can't do that to open every scene.

I believe most, if not all, chapters of Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon start in media res and then backtrack? I might be forgetting a couple but it's a recurrent structure throughout the book, and then it's an even higher degree of difficulty because there's two different narratives in different time periods.

So it can be done, but it's very tricky.

yeah, I'm gonna be honest, I love finn('s potential) and I have never wanted to interact with his fandom. not because they don't have a perspective I understand, but because there's simply nowhere productive they can go with it.

are you both women and is this paralegal like this with men or other women? does your firm have a lot of female attorneys? sometimes I've found if a person is used to dealing with men, that it's straight up sexism.

That paralegal is a woman, my supervisor and I are both women, the second paralegal is a man, the head guy is a man. But her previous department supervisor was also a woman. My impression is its less sexism and more dislike of change and wanting to stop said change.

I don't blame you for loving them, OP. I can't really understand why adults are mad at someone who's not an adult for not bringing adult sensibilities or skill to writing. It's as easy as not reading once they realize that they don't like this person's stuff.

you know what immediately after tfa i was a huge finn fan and as a black fan i wanted everything good for him, however the insane vitriol for those that were fans of other characters completely turned me off from his fandom. like is it not possible to like multiple characters at once? i actually had my own race questioned by "finn only" fans for daring to like kylo. it got so bad so quickly that by the time tlj was released i was out.

i've definitely been on the side of being super annoyed at someone putting out bad fanworks or doing fandom wrong or whatever, but yknow i'm also 100% with you and this is a very cute secret.
i remember how proud and bold i was about my bad art when i was young (god i gave my grandma a printout of my emo poems as a gift) and i miss that kind of fearlessness dearly

It means "in the middle of things" and it's a storytelling technique where you skip the exposition/backstory to start.

Sometimes the writers will go back and fill in what happened up to that point later.

Think of those shows/films that start with something crazy happening and then have a character address the audience like "you might be wondering how I got here" or whatever.

i've been discussing me doing training in my field with my case manager at the jobcenter, because even though i studied it once that was 7 years ago and i've never worked in it, so there's literally no point in me trying to find jobs with how i am. because of covid this whole thing got pushed back for like 1 1/2 year since i needed a (mental) health evaluation if i want them to pay for it and they'd been closed down etc. so it's been really tough waiting.
so we finally got the results from my evaluation and yay, i'm fit to go into training. but during our talk it became very apparent... that she wasn't thinking of full training, which would take a couple of years, but just some courses that would take at most a couple of months. i'm trying not to panic about it, but i'm so heartbroken because i had such high hopes of just getting to start over. 7 years of severe depression have completely shot my memory. without hyperbole i remember nothing of what i learned, a couple of months are not going to cut it. i told myself i'd be prepared for disappointment because it sounded too good to be true anyway but i can't help it i'm so upset
