I feel like you're equating general audiences with fandom because while most people who watch shows do move on to the next thing quickly, while occasionally talking about it with friends/colleagues when it comes up, fandom inclined people are still here keeping their respective fandoms going. Like I can think of several current fandoms that are still putting out lots of content even with new shows coming out.

But this has always worked this way: most people don't care about a piece of media much beyond it's initial airing.

Yeah, agreed. I watch a ton of stuff but I only end up in fandom for maybe 1-2% of it. Most things I watch, enjoy, and then move on to something else. That's always been the case for me and the advent of binge-able stuff hasn't changed my consuming or fandom habits at all.

Same here. The things I got into fandom for I'm still into fandom-wise, maybe a little more sporadically for some depending on how old they are, but I can't say this happens for even 3% of the things I watch. I love watching new media, I'll watch a bunch of shows and movies in a year and really enjoy them! But it's not likely that I'll want to consume fandom content for those shows/movies in that year because most of what I watch doesn't inspire fandom-interest for me bar maybe retweeting some art on twitter and I personally don't consider that to count me as being in a fandom.

Exactly. I consume a ton of media but for the vast majority of it my fandom interaction never goes beyond retweeting some art and maybe reading a couple of fics at the most.

Meanwhile, I'm still into some actual fandoms I got into more than ten years ago, but that's the exception rather than the rule because it isn't often that I get deep enough into a fandom to want to engage with it on a regular basis. Most stuff is just "this thing was cool, I enjoyed it" and I don't really have any deeper feelings about it than that.

i think op is conflating being a fan of something as being in fandom as well, which isn't how it works. most people are casual fans of the things they like, hell i am too with many media properties because while i like them they do not inspire any fannish feelings in me at all, but the ones that do? i'm still here making content for them, that hasn't stopped just because i like some new shows that come out.

also i think what we're seeing is more casual fan activity online, so while it can look like fandom moves on faster, it's more that we're just seeing what's always happened when it comes to media, most people move on from it after a week or a month to the new thing. but it's been like this for a long time with general audiences.

Yeah, I think this might be the case too and the point about seeing more general opinions of shows/movies is likely a contributing factor into fandom folks genuinely believing that fandom is somehow dying or lacking in staying power? Because this isn't reflected in the activity I see in new fandoms across fandom, big and small, but I guess if you see every Tom, Dick and Harry talk about the new Star Wars movie but then next month they're all over The Witcher I can see how that might make it look like interest doesn't last, but what you're actually seeing is the people who are fans in a more casual way moving on the way overall audiences always have.

Fandom is definitely more fractured currently than it used to be, but I don't think it's loosing focus or interest. Plus I can distinctly remember the folks way back when who would fandom hop into the new hotness just for more clicks on their fic, so it's not as if that's some new fangled behavior only exhibited by younger fans.
