Very New Beginner to Dungeons and Dragons

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
So I know its been getting popular for a while, but a friend of mine who just started playing it has gotten me curious about it - and I was wondering if anyone who happens to be into it have any recommendations on videos or what to read to understand it better. So far I've read up on the races and watched a few episodes of A Crap Guide to DnD.

Recommend listening to some podcasts/watching some campaigns, if those are your kind of thing. Critical Role is the big one, but there are tons out there that might help you figure out what you like.

One of the handbooks (I think for DMs) has a page dedicated to finding out what you like. I still think everyone should look at it so they can pin down what they want out of a campaign. The list goes Acting, Exploring, Instigating, Fighting, Optimizing, Problem Solving, Storytelling. The page is called "Know Your Players."

Otherwise finding a game (like at your local comics shop) will probably be your best bet at actually getting a feel for D&D. You can also find beginner-friendly games on Roll20.

Davy Chappy has some good starter videos, the 'crap guide to dnd' ones are great too. The videos I watch now are really in depth, like 2 hours on why Trickery clerics are *actually* really good (they get good spells and the stuff that isnt as good is easy to ignore) and I'd hesitate to recommend them. But of you want to know *too much* about things Treantmunk's stuff is great.

There are tons of great Actual Play podcasts but they might give you higher expectations than non-professional voice actors will pull off at first so don't compare yourself to them.

Really the best thing to read is the player's manual, focus on getting a grasp of races/classes. After that make something very simple, like a human fighter or halfling rogue and join a game. Ask your friend if they'd like to start a game, or try roll20. I've had great luck finding games over Craig's list but that's not as viable now.

Pro tip: roll your d20 to hit and damage all at once, it saves a ton of time and you can narrate a a high damage miss differently than a low damage miss for variety.

Also, very important, Dungeons and Dragons isnt all things. There are so many systems out there. Pay attention to what you enjoy. If you decide dnd isnt for you you'll have an easier time finding what will work for you.

Just remember, bards get no respect and nobody likes the rogues. Especially the chaotic neutral rogues. I'd advise not selecting those classes and alignments for your first few characters.

How are We doing today?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've been feeling low a lot lately, but I'm also trying to come up with ideas for femslash feb next month - so that has at least given me something to focus on.

had to fight with technology so that made me mad, but I've had a lot of whiskey so now it's not quite so bad.

It'll go back to bad once I sober up, for sure.

Pain is finally starting to lessen a tiny bit. I only have taken 2 doses of hydrocodone (at 9 and then 4), and I managed to stay at work until 3:45.

I love the new attorney who is heading our immigration department. He just started on Wednesday, but I can already tell he's got good plans for us. He really wants to teach me. He's already gotten me started on a couple cases of types I haven't done before and is going to help me along the way. After all the turnover we've had, I think we're finally going to start settling in as a department and making this work. And I'm excited.

Plus, he's very into pro bono and is going to have us do a few cases for this nonprofit that helps human trafficking victims. And that's really exciting to me.

And he's clearly got actual plans for us for how we can improve things. I think he's in for the long haul. And that's what we needed desperately.

Anyway, work is exciting. Other than that, I'm still healing from last Friday's dental adventure. Pain is definitely worse at the end of the day. And I still wake up in the middle of the night when the meds wear off, so I'm exhausted. Eating dinner now and then probably going to crash.

cw bummer

it's my birthday and i'm lying in bed with shoulder pain at 3am trying to fall asleep. i stopped talking to my family last year and i have no irl friends so no presents and i'm flat broke so i can't even buy myself something nice. i have been single for 8 years and unemployed for about the same amount of time (depression bla), literally nothing going on except the d&d games with my online friends that give me bad social anxiety.
to top it off i'm out of antidepressants until i see my psychiatrist on monday and when i tried to see my general practitioner for a prescription the bitchy receptionist just turned me away because they "never write prescriptions like that". also i have an appointment with the jobcenter today, with a new file manager. not excited about that.

it's days like these that i wonder what i'm trying so hard for

TMI Warning: Sex/Masturbation Talk

I realized earlier today that I'm in a crabby mood. Had a moment to sort my thoughts and I'm pretty sure it's because I can't orgasm or haven't been able to edge off in a satisfying way. 😭
For at least a week now, every time I masturbate the scenario in my head isn't doing it and then I waste time trying to think of a new scenario. Watching/reading porn hasn't been helping either. Videos/fics that usually do it for me haven’t gotten me hot.
I write a lot of smut and even writing stuff hasn't really been able to get me super hot.
Am I too stressed to enjoy sex and it's making me more stressed????? Why world, why??? 😭

I am so so glad it is my weekend because I could legally only work 4.5 more hours today, and I did it this morning and the last 3 of those were INSANE. Training someone to be my backup on a system and she's... well, I know too much about her to like her even if she's taking to it well. (Anti-vaxxer. -_-)

I've gotten barely any sleep for the last week because Thursday/Friday were spent stressing about the trip on Saturday to pick up the new bunny. And the new bun, by Saturday night, was so stressed from the car ride (at least that's what the vet thinks, because he's in great condition otherwise) that he nearly went into stasis and I had to mix up and syringe-feed him every few hours to keep his GI tract working.

But. Today seems like it has been at least 48 hours long, but it is now my weekend, and new bun is eating and drinking at least a little on his own and there is at least a little poop in the litterbox so I feel like maybe I can relax at some point before I have to go back to insane work stuff.

(New bun is worth not sleeping, for the record.)

Pulling an all-nighter because I need to be up too early to trust myself to go to bed, so I cleaned the whole kitchen, updated my tv backlog, organized my drawers and I'm currently just chilling on dw. I will play some old videogame until it's time to get dressed and then pass out on a bus for 8 hours.

What are you listening to right now?

I use my ipod every day to and from work, and sometimes in my office too. Last song I listened to, trying to remember, I think was either Riell's Animal or Sabaton's Winged Hussars. I definately listened to both of those on the trip home.

Rachel Maddow updating us on the angry Irish fishermen who are facing off with the Russian navy. :D

(If we're going music-only, I think it was Richard Shindell's cover of "Northbound 35" because a couple days ago I was writing something that is breaking me and apparently I felt I wasn't broken enough.)

My beloved has the audio book for STP's Raising Steam going as he gets ready for bed. Normally I find spoken audio really annoying to jump in and out of, but I know discworld so well I can enjoy it even in 45 second chunks.

I found an album of old American political election songs somebody posted on Youtube. "Tyler and Tippecanoe", that kind of thing. "Get On The Raft With Taft."

Something You Didn't Think You'd Enjoy But Ended Up Loving

I never have a good opinion on League of Legends. I don't really play games that often (my internet is shit poo poo and I don't have the money for super good service or a nice shiny machine to run the computer eating games that come out now) and I don't really go for its type when I do happen to play. From what I've observed the player base is...not fun to hang around to say the least. So I've always avoided it.

And that's why I had no interest in the Arcane series that came out. But I gave in and watched it since I thought the animation was intriguing. I've never seen that style before, like a painting. I'm really glad I did! I enjoyed it a lot!

Still not going to touch the game with a very long stick. But I enjoyed the series and I can't wait for the new season they confirmed.

Kane and Lynch game. The only shooter I played through. Not sure why I even tried it. Perhaps a fandom friend recced it due to slash.

Pineapple pizza. I think that all pizzas are too fatty but the pineapple one is the best. Didn't try it until recently.

I just watched "Chicken People" a documentary about people who raise show chickens. I thought it would be mean spirited cringe but it was actually really sweet and makes me much more fond of chickens than the PBS documentary did.
