Having an interest in Japanese animation and being a weeb are different things. Unless you seriously investigating the possibility to legally marry your waifu and talk like kawaii desu, you're safe.

And also I don't see how it's anybody's business what you do in your spare time. I assume it's your own money you spend for tickets and merch. So presumably you are an adult. Therefore you can just tell anyone to sod off if they try to tell you how to live your life or criticise what you're interested in. Just an idea in case next time you're on a date and the guy laughs again.

Yep. Cue that xkcd comic with the ball pit. ;)

Also, at the risk of sounding like I'm going "back in my day, uphill, both ways"... anime is a relatively normal interest nowadays, at least in the US. You see merch in stores like Walmart and Target, it's been airing on TV pretty commonly for the last 25 years. "Normal" streaming services license it, tons of it gets released on DVD/Blu-Ray/etc. If he's still like "lol animu is for weebs" he's been living under a rock or something...

Buying merch and going to first-night showings of theatrical anime releases still puts you in the upper echelons of anime fandom, though

I dunno, speaking as someone who does go to cons and does cosplay, neither of those things seem extraordinarily weeby to me, unless the house is FULL of anime merch. Admittedly, my scale might be slightly skewed since, as noted, I do go to cons and cosplay. ;)

Or is "weeb" intentionally a lighter version of "otaku"? I had been going with the assumption they meant approximately the same thing.

Da

If you aren't aware, "weeb" is a shortening of "weeaboo". "Weeaboo" was the output of a particular mid-2000s website's word-replacement filter, with the input word being "Wapanese". As you might guess, "Wapanese" comes from smooshing together "white Japanese", and was specifically white-person-cringily-obessesed-with-Japan and super derogatory.

With the time since then, I think "weeb" has softened quite a bit in use, but that might depend on where in the internet you operate.

As with almost anything else dismissed, mocked, and whispered about, it's not the interest itself, it's the cringe trappings. Even cosplay itself (okay, I'm a cosplayer) is admired and emulated. What people inside fandom consider weeby is all the cringy behavior - like airt mentioned, talking like kawaii desu, posting pics of you spooning your dakimakura, and so forth. There's a level of performative acting-out involved in being a weeb that people look down down.

I mean, you don't hear derogatory names being slung at Marvel fans for going to midnight showings, wearing Captain America t-shirts, having posters framed on their walls, and cosplaying. Not until they display negative behavior aspects like not showering, mansplaining comics, rudeness and superiority toward fans of other things, etc do you start to consider them idk neckbeards or fanboys or whatever the bad word is this year. These days fandom is so mainstream that there's going to be negative behavior endemic to the specific fandom property for every property. Anybody calls you a weeb for watching anime, they're so out of touch. Clap back for that.

🥲 thanks, anon!

Nah, all that stuff is a bit beyond my limit. Although I'll admit my fanfiction preferences are essentially OC/Reader gets with fave MC, and I have no qualms or shame over that, it's pure fantasy, as one can't get with 2D men IRL.

Thanks again, yeah.

I know this is supposed to be a story about how he clocked your weebness or w/e but honestly he just sounds like a douchebag.

Yeah.

For real.

Lol

To be fair to him, I don't think he was *trying* to be a dick about it...we were kind of joking around. But still. I have to gauge better with whom I can bring it up ( at least *how* excitedly I can bring it up. I got fairly excited and thought he would match my excitement, but I was wrong). Ultimately, I'm going to want to be with someone who I can watch things with and can match my level, so you know what? w/e lol

Yeah! Or even if someone does not share your hype, they should find your hype cool or endearing and at least be interested. I hope you have fun embracing your inner weeb. :)

Thank you secret maker!

For making my secret! I went to see the movie! It's my first anime film I've seen in theaters since my childhood! It was worth it. Plus the theatre was basically empty, so my friend and I could crack jokes occasionally.
