I mean, yeah. Yep. Absolutely. It's terrible. A completely awful writing choice. No good. There would have been a million better things to write.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, Rey being overpowered is partly why I stopped watching after TFA. I suppose it might have been explained in the sequels, but it doesn't sound like the writing was great there either.

Found the incel. Tell me your strong opinions on Captain Marvel too.

NAYRT

People can dislike a character without being incels, and there's no need to respond so vituperatively to a disagreement about a character.

Oh, I was waiting for predictable troll to show up and predictably troll.

I hate bad writing, especially the kind that props up a character who hasn't earned their place, instead of giving them understandable motives or true character development. I don't give a shit what their gender is.

Not that I have an obligation to tell you my opinions on Captain Marvel, but I had no issues with the movie or the character. But I also admit that I didn't have previous material to compare either one to (not having read the comics), so maybe some writing decisions didn't seem that off to me.

Incidentally, I'm female. Try again.

I rolled my eyes hard at AYRT's opinion, but jumping straight to "they're an incel" is hella over the top and not helping anyone.

Overpowered my ass. Maybe in RoS but not TFA.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I guess we were watching different movies then.

Buddy. Every lead character in Star Wars is OP. All of them. Rey fits comfortably inside the power bracket laid down before her.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking THIS. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
YEP.

Or in any story for that matter. Oh no, in this fantasy magic story, the main character has special abilities? You don't say!

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly!

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah but the whole "reboot" sucked bc JJ Abrams has no concept of theme.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole "reboot" sucked. I blame JJ Abrams always.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Then again basically everything about both the First Order and Palpatine's involvement in the sequels was immensely stupid top to bottom.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
TROS still makes me so mad to this day. :(

There were certainly things about TFA and TLJ I both loved and disliked, but I can think of really one thing of TROS I liked (apart from the vague things like "BB8 is still cute" or "that hug was nice".
Everything surrounding Palpatine takes the "nope" cake, though.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate TRoS

But...

I liked Dio. I thought he was cute and the poor guy was abused.

I liked the look of the Burning Man Planet because yeah thats what it was.

I liked the shot with the ...iceberg?

I liked the part where all the jedi of the past speak to Rey.

Characters? Motivations? Plots? All are bad and the movie was bad.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the slug. "Somehow Palpatine has returned. Dark magic, cloning, secrets only the Sith know" is a line so bad that it's going to live in my mind forever. And it's always nice to see Oscar Isaac and Daisy Ridley doing things on a movie screen even if they're stupid things.

That's about all the credit I can give TROS.

Even the things I liked in TROS make me sad because once you drill down, there's nothing holding any of it together and the movie constantly has contradictory messages.

Yeah, the ending of RotJ is really cool and clever, and it's more than just "good guy and bad guy throw CGI at each other." As much as so many big Hollywood films, the sequels included, try to copy Star Wars, they often forget the coolest things about it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Rey didn't beat Palpatine in a duel, nor did she overpower him. She was able to reflect his own power back at him, and the strain of doing so literally killed her.

I agree that TROS was a dumpster fire, but let's call it out for what actually happened.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-26 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand why that killed her.

Chris Terrio claims he's seen ROTJ more than any other movie, but he seemed to have learned nothing from it.

Since the Rebels blowing up a second Death Star and overthrowing the Emperor only brought a temporary reprieve, then TROS needed to fundamentally change something to heal the galaxy and bring lasting peace. Not by having yet another Star Destroyer fall on Jakku and proving DJ to be the Cassandra of the franchise.
