That's a good point. I can think of other Austen heroines who'd be more fun, but I've always liked Anne and she'd be a very good, loyal friend who's level headed and sensible. I could use a friend like that.

Yes, I like her a lot - less exhausting than Lizzie or Catherine, less bossy than Emma, and so on. ALso I have a fellow feeling for her because I too have a shitty family.

I always liked, however, the idea of being Elinor's friend from Sense and Sensibility.

Anne is my favourite of the Austen protagonists. I think some of the maturity comes from the fact that she’s older than most of the others but it’s nice.

Yeah, Anne would probably be my top pick as well. I think Elinor would be second.

Austen honestly didn't write a single dud protagonist, though some were certainly more readily likeable than others. Emma is actually one of my favorite Austen protags, specifically because she had maybe the most pronounced character arc of the bunch. Not sure I'd be up to being her friend, though.

She's a bit too internal for me (which is lovely in a novel, but i'm not as fond of how much that seems like dithering in real life I think), but Austen did such a stunning job detailing how she's matured past the foibles of her other younger heroines, obviously as it's the point of the book, that I totally agree that she's one of two I could most be friends with, though I think Elinor is bit more fun. Fanny's a rather distant third.

Seeing the stepmother as abusive, let alone OTT abusive, is a total failure to comprehend anything about the movie's messages. Other characters repeatedly tell Sarah flat out that she's being ridiculous to think her life is unfair, and they're right.
