What popular fandom characterizations do you hate?

I don't know if it's super popular, but I've started reading Star Wars fics set in the time period around the prequels and the amount of UwU twinky emotionally clingy whumped to oblivion versions of Obi-Wan really surprised me. I see where it came from, but I don't like it.

I hate Genma Saotome's fandom portrayal as being a fat evil git. While it is true he is perfectly capable of being a bit of a cowardly git at times, he's not fat nor is he even particularly evil. Canonically he is thickset but muscled, and he is more dumb than evil.

He is floofy when he turns into a panda though.

This applies to a lot of the fandoms I've been in - but where a female character is The Evil Bad/Villian/Bitch who's primarily there to 'get in the way' of a m/m ship or cause some unnecessary evil just because.

Use to be a lot more common back in the day and has mostly fallen out of favor - but every so often it pops back up in a couple of fics I've come across that had been written recently and always feel a little whiplash from it.

I have seen this in multiple fandoms and seriously wtf. (Maybe because they are genuinely nice guys and the writer only knows "nice guys"...?)

That Melkor is abusive towards Sauron. I can absolutely believe it in-character for Melkor, although I usually point out that he shared power with Sauron, which he doesn't do with anyone else, and let Sauron have a hand in all his works. But it isn't remotely in-character for Sauron to put up with that. Sauron is a complete narcissist. There is no way he'd put up with being abused and remain loyal to Melkor if that was going on.

Not a single characterizations so much as a group characterization, but I hate when Harry Potter fics act like the Gryffindors were all self-righteous bullies and if they'd been nicer then the Slytherins wouldn't have been the way they were, and after the war the Gryffindors have an ethical responsibility to extend a hand in friendship to the poor downtrodden Slytherins, and if they don't do it then they're no better than the blood purists they fought to defeat in the war.

It comes up a lot (though I think has been less popular in recent years), this sort of woobifying of the Slytherins while simultaneously acting like the Gryffindors had it soooo easy and were actually self-righteous jerks. And I'm just not here for it.

None of the Slytherins are beyond forgiveness or redemption, IMO, because they were young and they were parroting what they'd been taught. The good/bad divide isn't nearly as cut and dried as canon makes it out to be, and I do have sympathy for what some of the elder Slytherin characters must've gone through. But the elder Slytherins were plenty old enough to know they were doing things that were very wrong, and I'm not interested in seeing them cast as victims over and above the people who were actual victims of Voldemort and his supporters.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and I'll try my best to use an appropriate image choice. Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.

You know the thing which bugs me about Homer's The Odyssey? Odysseus's dog was still waiting for him when he got home. He'd been gone for ten years of the Trojan War, plus ten years of Odyssey-ing bouncing around the Med, plus whatever the travel and logistics time was gearing up for the Trojan War, just how the fuck old was that dog? How do I get a pupper that lives for nigh on thirty years?

I really wish Netflix would pick up Rememberwhenyoutried's "Sisters of Dorley" YA internet novel for a series, but it would probably be too weird for them. Plus I think they've given up adapting internet novels anyway. (Avail on AO3 )

Say what you want about Doctor Who in the mid eighties, but I just love their robot designs in that period. Drathro from Trial of a Timelord, and the cleaners from Paradise Towers both look awesome. That is the future-design language I wanted.

I don't know why so many Star Wars fans were creaming their pants over seeing Cad Bane in The Book of Boba Fett; he might be a fan fave, but he is not this fan's fave. Most overrated character in the whole damn franchise.

I loved the 80s Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. My favourite character from it was Shelia, the girl with the invisibility cloak, and I always used to pretend to be her when playing. Sometimes I look back on that and wonder if I'm quite as cismale as I think I am?

What motivates me to keep going with my physical rehab, especially on the tough days? Is it my physical therapist? Is it the thought of being able to one day run again? Is it the wealth of inspirational tv and movie characters cheering me on? Nope. It is a mental Image of Windsor Davies' character Sgt. Major "shut up" Williams from "It Ain't Half Hot, Mum" standing behind me screaming at me for being a pansy. Yay, it is a win for a horribly racist and homophobic tv show. I'm fucked up.

Normally I hate shows built on forced conflict, moody staring, and miscommunication, but I love Cobra Kai and it does all of those. Difference between that and all other shows is the silent, moody, staring manages to be full of characters motivations, the conflict actually furthers the plot, and the miscommunication comes from actual characterisation, and it isn't all just a way to pad the episode out and stop everything being resolved early.

Someone once said Son of the White Mare is 'Hungarian Dragon Ball Z' and I haven't been the same since. The former movie and the latter anime have fused into a single trippy entity in my subconscious; if I ever dream about one it's inevitably in the art style of the other.
