Cringiest Fanfic you ever wrote?

Ishizu/Marik voyeuristic bathtime smut is up there. Long story short, older sister unbeknownst to her little brother watches him from afar.

A melodramatic Pokemon fic where Team Rocket accidentally kills Pikachu while trying to capture it, they angst about it, Ash is consumed by vengeful thoughts, there's swearing. I think it would have been slightly less cringy if I'd just gone full-out grimdark, but I made the decision, which I thought was very smart and mature, to try and keep it within the boundaries of what might actually happen in a real Pokemon movie. Resulting in things like Misty tearfully shouting "D*** you!" at Team Rocket after Pikachu's bloodless death (yes, I typed it with asterisks in the fic) and everyone pausing to be very shocked at her language.

When I first learned that "self-insert fanfic" was a thing, I tried writing some intentionally. With that in mind it probably wasn't as cringey as it could be, because it did involve Sephiroth showing up in the real world and me taking him in since he was obviously unstable and confused and needed somewhere to live... but he still was crazy enough to want to destroy the planet and I was not cool with that.

Mostly it was cringey because I didn't realize when I heard of self-insert fanfic that there was cringe inherently built in rather than just another genre of fanfiction like say, hurt/comfort or smut.

What was the last film you watched and did you enjoy it?

The Scariest Story Ever: A Mickey Mouse Halloween Spooktacular is really cute, ya'll.

Spider-Man: Far From Home. Jake Gyllenhaal was clearly having fun! But the film was... no fantastic.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye. I loved it and am happy Jessica Chastain won the Oscar for her performance.

The last film I re-watched was Charade, which was just as fun, enjoyable, and comforting as I remembered. Tonight I'm planning on continuing my Cary Grant fest with The Philadelphia Story and possibly His Girl Friday.

The last new film I watched was The Adam Project. It was mildly diverting without being particularly enjoyable. I guess it's a serviceable sci-fi film, but it didn't make much of an impression and the jokes fell pretty flat. The brief serious scene (in the bar) seemed like it belonged to a more interesting movie.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

It was fun! Mostly gave background to a lot of the characters, and makes me hope we'll get a plasma vessel arc anime.

Also, the roots of Gojo's playboy ways were hinted at and now I need to know lol

last film I rewatched was one of my favorites, Napoleon Dynamite, this morning.
last film I watched that I hadn't seen before was My Dinner with Andre, a few weeks ago, which I also liked but you can't get a more different movie from Napoleon Dynamite if you tried.

The Power of the Dog, and I loved it. It's creepy as hell, sexy in a twisted way, and absolutely drop-dead gorgeous to look at.

What are you reading this week?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Severance by Robert Butler. Decapitation and the 90 seconds one experiences before death is an awesome theme for a collection of short stories and poems that unfortunately proved not as interesting in its, ah, excuse the pun, 'execution'.

Started Tantric Coconuts by Greg Kincaid last weekend, but I'm thinking I might not finish it. Already it's got some, like, not out-and-out racism, but one of the main characters is an Indigenous woman, and the author is a white man, and IT SHOWS. Ya girl is the most stereotypical Native American, hippie-ish character. Also, his writing style and pacing are very dry and slow so far. Thinking of switching to Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood instead.
