I blame the writers for making him remember all of hell. And not just that, he has to deal with everything else that they throw at him too, be it pre-hell or Season Four. I love his angst but having him suffer this much is unbelievably numbing*. I don't know why he hasn't tried to eat his gun yet.

Agreed 100%. The extent of his suffering is incredibly numbing, and sort of unnecessary. It kinda seems sometimes like they're just going, what is the absolute WORST thing we can possibly do to Dean right now??? And it's like, sigh, what happened to him now? Then they have him go all bitchy, complaining, angsty S1 Sam on everyone's ass too in a couple episodes? Though I do think that he's not being productive like this, and someone does need to tell him to stop whining, I kinda feel like a bad person for it. He totally has the right to be a fucking mess. I don't even know.
