Even his Culture ripoff novel for Doctor Who is dripping with copaganda, the guy has issues with sucking up to cops.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
What does copaganda in a Doctor Who novel look like?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt but probably the cops just being present and doing their jobs instead of being portrayed as the most evil profession to ever exist.

What do you think of Paul Cornell? His supernatural London protagonists are cops, but they’re definitely not pro-cop
propaganda.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not read any of his non Doctor Who works, so I can't comment. I didn't generally like his Doctor Who works though, or his writing style, so I dunno.

Wait, both of these people wrote for Doctor Who? Is this the British equivalent of everyone writing for Star Wars?

Yeah, I felt the same. Also he is clearly obsessed with architecture and history and music and I would have loved the exact same thing but with an architect or an historian or a musician or something.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you think it's copaganda? The one that I read, it was packed with the culture clash between the... 'responsible' policing of the new kids and the nasty pieces of work that just beat up suspects until they got a confession.

Investigating the flaws of something, and how it can be better, isn't any kind of propaganda.

Or does the tone shift radically as the series goes along?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This was my feeling as well fwiw

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
DA yes, same here.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Portraying even one cop as not evil is copaganda, hth.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
/s Here, you dropped this.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
You need to get outside and see some sunlight.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Evil, no-- complicit, yes. And honestly I think that's worse. Oh there's so many cops that are good people and really want to help!!! --but will turn a blind eye to their fellow cops doing fucking evil shit. Bc in the end they're too scared to lose their jobs. And it's that cowardice that keeps us where we are. Thus, all cops are bastards.

How’s that boot taste?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I’m similarly confused and I’ve read several of the books. Some context — like describing actual story elements — would have been very helpful.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently it's just "has sympathetic characters that are police officers"

I only read the first book, but that sucks to hear.

...That said, it did end with me having the hots for Thomas Nightingale and uh, also me shipping him with Peter, sooooo...

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously, read what you want. But it’s worth saying that I saw no more “copaganda” in the subsequent books than in the first one. So if the depiction of the police didn’t bother you then, it probably won’t bother you in the others.

Next books are the same in this matter. I even want to say it's actually better in some parts. But it's debatable and depends on how you read some plot points.

I understand not wanting to read about cops, especially if one run into system and have seen how bad it is. (and believe me I hate cops) But acab crowd being mad at descriptions of fantasy cops is fucking annoying. No, author isn't pro copoganda if they chose for their character who fights crime profession that supposed to represent fighting crime

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
You do realise things are different in the UK right? Not perfect, but verrry different. Some shitheads here, but some solid people too working as cops. Just ran a training course with a bunch. Really mixed bunch, female, BAME, and all very concerned with modern day policing issues.

America =/= Britain.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say anything about the practices of British policing, but I can definitely say that I've seen British police defend the excesses of American policing.

Non-Americans: You Americans assume everyone else is American like them! How self-centered!
Also non-Americans: Assumes OP is American.

I don't live in the US or UK and we have protests against cops here, too. Whoops!

It sucks that so many anons in this secret thread haven’t done research and think police brutality and corruption is something that only exists in America. Guns and racism make it worse, of course, but these problems still exist wherever there are police. Also, I know there’s racism in other countries too, but you know the type of racism I’m talking about when I mention America.

Also, people generalizing and stereotyping any countries derisively is a shitty thing to do.
