I dislike JK Rowling as much as the next person but I think some people get really hyperbolic in their discussion of her transphobia. I literally saw someone say that if they see a person wearing HP clothing that means "it isn't safe" for trans people to be around that person.

Some people are not terminally online and don't even know about JKR's views. Also Harry Potter clothing was popular for YEARS before JKR showed her true colors. I'm no longer buying anything new that's HP related but sorry if I don't want to throw away perfectly good clothes that I already paid for.

Hot take: People can also think the whole thing has been blown massively out of proportion by social media, and simultaneously don't hate JKR but support trans people too.

Famous men who express actual transphobia get left alone.

JKR expresses opinions based on real world facts - sex based discrimination is very real and is present in the lives of every person with female biology the world over. Single sex spaces are important in some cases, such as refuges. But because she's a white woman who refuses to bow to the culture of fear being used as a tool, she is demonised as if she is the worst person and transphobe on Earth. It's the same for all women who dare to point out that female presenting people suffer different issues to trans women, they get called TERFs instantly. Single sex spaces being erased does represent a risk because they are vulnerable to predators.

Where she and I disagree is that, just as I feel the female population should not be expected to shoulder that risk, I don't believe trans women - who are vulnerable in other ways - should either. That poses a huge problem because what solutions does it leave??? Unless we start castrating sex offenders.

There are actually very nuanced discussions in both the trans community and larger LGBTQ community about all the time about all the things yo just said people get demonized for proposing. If you only listen to performative screaming on social media and the TERFs who put it on blast to make it look like how trans people and allies are at large, you're going to have a warped view.

I don't think that's an accurate representation of what JKR has actually said. Defending the exclusion of trans women from women-only spaces is not the only thing she's said on the topic. And I definitely think the people that she's allied herself with and actively promoted go far beyond that into actively denigrating trans women and trans identities, and are more or less openly transphobic. I think those are basically the reasons why people have responded to her as they have done. People aren't really inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt based on the people and movements she's placing herself with.

I'm not sure what any of that has to do with "refusing to bow to a culture of fear being used as a tool" - I don't know what culture of fear you have in mind, or who's using it as a tool. And I'm also curious - you said that you support trans people; what exactly does that mean in your head? And you said that people get accused of being TERFs too quickly - what do you think actually does make someone a TERF?

As annoying as they can be, I don’t think hey_hey_hey is the type of person to hide behind anon in order to say anything. They’ve said plenty of suspect things while using their username, after all. I don’t disagree that this is TERF-like bs though. But at least OP does say they hate JKR, I guess? Which at least makes them better than the JKRstan TERF who’s blowing up the comments with their backwards bigotry.

OP here, not hey_hey_hey and kinda regretting making this secret now that the person above sperged their transphobia all over it. I was just annoyed at people telling me that wearing my favorite hoodie I bought seven years ago that happens to say Ministry of Magic is violence against transpeople.

I honestly do see where you’re coming from about clothes you already own vs. buying new merch, and how some people don’t consider that you may not be actively supporting the franchise anymore just by wearing a shirt. I have a pair of very comfy HP sleep shorts I bought years ago that I still wear sometimes, so it would be very hypocritical for me not to see your point in that regard. I don’t always have a lot of money to spare on new clothes anyways, and I imagine that’s the case for a lot of people.

It’s also not your fault that the TERF anon hijacked your secret to spam their bs.
