(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)It always cracks me up as well (not just c-dramas, Japanese and Korean ones too -- LatAm telenovelas do it too, but it's usually someone European who actually speaks Spanish like a native or they put on an accent, but I digress). My favorite has to be when they're just there as random body guards or whatever to some rich family lol. There was one dude who played an English teacher and his Japanese was actually pretty good (I'm willing to bet he's actually an English teacher lol). He spoke English like normal. Some random tutor however...where do they cast these people?! Lol
I will say I was super surprised (and happy) when I saw a black girl in one the Japanese dramas I was watching! I'm pretty sure she was half Japanese probably, and she had no speaking lines, but still!!! She was visual constant as one of the other office workers. It was cool!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)To be fair, there's an in-character reason for Hendry's Mandarin to sound bad, in that he *is* a foreigner.

Yeah, but I don't expect that level of logic in a cdrama since they'll have characters who are supposedly Japanese speaking flawless Mandarin even when they're speaking to other Japanese characters. (Because the actors are Chinese.)

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 01:37 am (UTC)(link)Bear in mind that Hendry Cox is a guy who chews the scenery in every scene in which he manages to insert himself...

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)Honestly, people can be such dicks about things like this.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)Calm down, and let some people who love a series gently poke fun at one of its weaker areas.
If we start mocking everyday folk in their everyday lives, instead of people paid good money for their vocal expertise? Then I would accept your ire.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 03:21 am (UTC)(link)Also. Until you've heard an example of what we're talking about - your opinions aren't worth much. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 05:33 am (UTC)(link)Ah... in M9 Hendry Cox really chews the scenery. Lots of eye-rolling, active body language, huge and insincere grins.
I don't know about rare for villains to smile? But the character is extremely over-the-top, and that might be what OP is talking about.
(Oh god, every time Hendry Cox comes on screen I want to punch him so bad. By that standard, he is an *excellent* villain.)
