I'm trans. If I see someone wearing a bunch of Potter merch, then I have no idea if they are a transphobe who is going to go off on me or not. I have to treat that person, who is draped in the merch of a property that is increasingly beloved of transphobes, as a danger. That is what makes it feel unsafe. And yes I know #NotAllPotterFans, but I can't tell which are the open transphobes, which are the closet transphobes, or which are just happy pretending to ignore the issue that affects me, that they are until they go off on me. So I'm going to take the option that keeps me safe, and treat that person like they are a transphobe and manage my safety. If you don't like it, take it up with Rowling.

How do you know that AYRT passes, or even chooses to? Because trans people who get clocked in public have absolutely received harassment and abuse, and it's irresponsible to comment about their life experience when you have no way of knowing.

The vast majority of people who wear Harry Potter merchandise know nothing about Rowling's personal views. So this is just funny to me as an indicator of how people feel about Trans people. It is like using of someone owns a Disney shirt or baseball hats.

Oh no, the many millions of people who read/watched Harry Potter properties and might have a scarf or something should all burn them to satisfy 1-2% of the population who thinks they're all transphobes.

I don't particularly care for Harry Potter, but many fans separate the works they enjoy from the author. Lovecraft's work is great, but he was a total dick. I don't assume people are racist if they have a Cthulhu t-shirt.

What is Lovecraft's twitter handle?

Because it’s not about the Trans person for the most part. It’s about the people who want to control the behaviour of others and co opt victimhood.

I teach third graders. Eight-year-olds. You know, the low end of the age group Harry Potter was originally written for. Of course some of them like Harry Potter. Some of them even seem to be reading it for the first time and bring their HP books for free reading period. Maybe some day I'll be able to have a talk with them about trans and other LGBTQ identities specifically, but for now I just try to be inclusive in my teaching style, and none of them have showed openly transphobic kid behavior. I assure you none of them have a clue about JK Rowling. I hope this discussion is about adults in fandom and not actual kids just liking kids books.

And the vast majority of Chelsea football fans are harmless, but if I'm wearing a Spurs top when a bunch of them come into a pub I'm still drinking up and leaving. I'm sorry if wearing the same gear as the violent assholes gets you lumped in with the violent assholes, but there is no way to tell that you are one of the violent assholes wearing the same gear from the same club as you are also in.

What if someone doesn't wear Harry Potter merch but still goes back and watches the third movie? What about someone who doesn't wear Harry Potter merch but still reads Harry Potter fanfiction? What about someone who goes to the Harry Potter theme park land at Universal?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
ngl but someone who willingly pisses money on the themepark is a fool.

at least you can pirate the movies and read fanfiction for free.

So if somebody has a really comfy shirt that happens to say Hogwarts, or a skirt with Gryffindor emblazoned on the hem, they need to throw those clothes away just to prove they aren't a transphobe? Sorry we can't all afford brand new wardrobes just because JK Rowling sucks.

Ikr, the only HP merch I own is a pair of slip-on shoes that I've been wearing for my cleaning job because they're one of my few water-proof shoes and I had gotten them before everything happened. The money is already gone and I intend to wear them til they fall apart :P

If you see someone wearing a plain t-shirt do you assume that they're a safe person to be around or do you wait to find out about who they are from the things that they say and do?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
If you see a t-shirt that isn't covered in gang signs, you can assume they are not interested in signalling to all and sundry they are part of a gang. If you see someone wearing a crips tshirt you can assume that they have at least a passing interest gang affiliation. One of those people is significantly more dangerous to be around.

I get what you're saying (unlike the other anons replying, apparently). TBH I do the same on dating apps if anyone's put HP in their interests. It's not a red flag, but it is a sign we're probably going to have disagreements down the line.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
By avoiding HP fans you will avoid some transphobes, but not a statistically significant number of them. Which is to say, you could just as well pick just about any other group of people to avoid and have comparable success at avoiding transphobes.

Still, socializing with someone is a choice not an obligation. If it's comforting to you to socially avoid HP fans then that's totally your prerogative and needs no justification.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
+1 all of this.

I think it's important to distinguish deciding on your own comfort zone and excluding certain people from it, and telling others that they should have the same comfort zones as you. "I avoid people I know like HP" fine, "If you're not avoiding people who like HP, you're putting yourself in danger! Stay safe!" ehhhh not so fine. People can make their own choices. And "avoiding" someone should also not include spreading word to others that a certain person is a transphobe, or confronting them to tell them why you're going to avoid them (unless they explicitly ask you first).

Oh boy, the number of people taking this personally. It's like they can't stomach the idea that a stranger might erroneously assume something about them for reasons of personal safety in a way that doesn't at all affect them. It's like men who get offended at the idea that some women who walk alone at night choose to cross the street when they see a man near them. It's like, sure, you are ~*misunderstood*~ and that sucks (debatably) but that other person is just trynna live.
