CGI was supposed to unleash film maker's imaginations, all it really did was document their lack of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Either that, or the greater worry for their budgets, or the abuse CGI animators get from Hollywood.

Not that I disagree. I've come to really hate the abuse of CGI.

At first I thought it was me being old and liking 90's films, but being new to watching The Thing, Army of Darkness, and They Live!, I realize I believe far more those special effects than those forcibly thrown quickly by overworked and underpaid CGI animators forced to do overtime by beancounters.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-15 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think also that Hollywood has gotten the idea that mainstream audiences aren't looking for super out-there creatures.

I think it's the loss of the tactile element. Computers just limit imagination in a way working with our hands doesn't.

I am horrified when I watch a movie about pilots in World War II and the flying sequences are all CGI. Like, I am here for the warbirds what is wrong with you people? Or driving movies with ridiculous CGI stunts.

Also I have no real quarrel with people whoike the Star Wars prequel films, but Yoda is supposed to be a Muppet, not CGI, and I can't get over it.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-17 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yoda is not a Muppet! The Yoda prop was designed, constructed, and operated by Industrial Light and Magic. To be a Muppet the character has to be a product of what is now called Henson's Creature Shop. They are totally separate things.

YES

Rygel there was one of Farscape's more vanilla looking aliens too. Check out Season One's DNA Mad Scientist for some truly freaky shit.

My favorite Farscape character was Pilot though, another amazing animatronic character. Animatronics can blend the best of physical prop and voice acting, which is always best for giving the flesh and blood actors something to act off of.

I love Pilot so much, he is such an interesting character. And I always forget that he is basically a big puppet

(Anonymous) 2022-05-15 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You know why Pilot was so great, other than the vocal work, it was because they gave the puppet microexpressions. I caught a talk from one of the creatureshop engineers once, and they talked about how for puppets to be believable they needed to be given small barely noticeable microexpressions to act alongside the human actors. Apparently that is something Henson tried to give even the stiff foam puppets in some way (usually with the way the puppeteers moved it), and the more sophisticated the puppet, the more mini-movements they needed to build in. It was a whole damn art. Too many puppet props just don't bother with anything other than the macromovements.

It is so good!
This creatures all have emotions and it's engaging

(Anonymous) 2022-05-15 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Pilot is such a great character, and it really is amazing how easy it is to forget he's a puppet.

DNA Mad Scientist was responsible for causing an unsuspecting, 12-year-old me to discover I had a massive, massive body horror squick. Very good episode, though!

That FUCKING creepy baby looking thing... To hell with that thing!

ALL the Pilot love! I adored Rigel (as awful as he was), but Pilot was...wonderful. If you've never had the pleasure of seeing 'Farscape Undressed' I highly recommend it - just to see Pilot, how big he is and how he is operated. You do truly forget that he is essentially a 'puppet', animatronics and operators not withstanding.

Farscape was amazing.

Just starting to watch episodes of this here and there (since they're airing on Comet now) and all the practical effects are just wonderful. And the CGI that IS used has aged pretty well, too!

Hard agree. CGI both seems to limit imagination in creature design, and in some cases, really screws with things like eyelines and actor chemistry.

It's because there's something actually there, like you can reach out and literally touch this character if you had the chance to, which make them "real" and "alive" in a way CGI can't replicate. Same goes with prosthetics and other physical make-up.

CGI can have some amazing visuals, but a lot of the time, it just feels like you're looking at a picture in front of a greenscreen.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-16 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
CGI has its place, like when it can be used to make dangerous stunts safer or allow actors to use less uncomfortable/damaging prosthetics, etc. But IMO it's always best used in conjunction with physical things. Not only for the reasons that you already put out there, which are valid, but because honestly, most actors don't really do that well with fully CGI special effects/characters/etc. They need something to interact with too, or it seems less real.

So I'm a big fan of animatronics, puppetry, and old school VFX/SFX. I think blending CGI is cool when used appropriately (not to mention wondering how much waste either of these processes create), but man I just love the weird old costuming, machinery, prosthetics and puppetry and how are we going to get this to look real yet unsettle you? That element is gone.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-16 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
CGI is young compared to puppetry and animation done by hand. It's still Getting There. Go back to early animatronics and I imagine you'd be whining just the same. Same with some of the earliest animation. You enjoy those because it comes from the benefit of years and years of people figuring out how to do them well.

I miss Farscape.
