What draws you to a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of vaguely inspired by #1 - what kind of fandoms do you like, and what kind of media do you get fannish about? What do things you're fannish about have in common? Whether it's a medium, a tone or genre, specific character dynamics, or different kinds of fanworks. Or is it just totally random?

I watch something and end up shipping characters together so I go looking for fic about them. That's pretty much it.

For me it basically boils down to if whatever media I'm consuming is something I vibe with and want to get into discussions on it --- talking about a mythos or worldbuilding aspects. Sometimes I just end up loving a character and wanting to read fics about them.

Things where I need to talk to other people in order to understand the nuances.

I'm drawn to a fandom if I love the source material but ALSO annoyed by it. I need to be invested in the canon but also frustrated at things like shoddy world building, poor character arcs, etc. to get me really into a fandom.

Because I like fixes. I like writing fix-its. I like reading them. I want to see how a thousand different people can take the same bones of the canon and go in all different directions. That's what I like about fandom.

There are a few shows I love that I don't go looking for fandom because I don't... I don't feel they NEED anything else. I'm perfectly content with the canon as is. And if I genuinely hate a thing, I don't go looking for things either.

But I need the friction between my love for a thing and my wish for a thing to be BETTER.

I usually get attached to a character or a pairing and want to see more of them, so I write fic for them to keep their story going. Or sometimes I get mad at how one of my favorite characters was treated in canon, so I write AUs in which they get better endings.

It's pretty much always because of a ship. I'll get really into a ship, go looking for fic and want to discuss it with people, etc. Although it's usually a ship that's relatively drama-free, because there are ships I like where there's nothing but fandom drama and ship wars and I have no desire to deal with any of that.

Shipping potential. I can enjoy media that doesn't have that, but I don't get into the fandom.

philstar22: (911 Lone Star ship)

Re: What draws you to a fandom?

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-07-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The top two things is interesting, complex worldbuilding and complex, interesting characters. Those are the things that tend to make me full-on fandom something, not just enjoy watching/reading.

Occasionally a ship will grab me even if I'm not super invested in the actual fandom (Carlos/CK from 991:Lone Star would be the most recent example).

When it comes to any fandom I'm there exclusively for the porn or the aesthetic. Both are visual dopamine and they arguably go hand in hand.

Good fanfic, and lots of it.

(what can I say, I have no taste.)

Okay, also sf/fantasy/genre elements, diverse characters (especially in age and class and cultural background) who have interesting interactions, and not a lot of badly-done canon het ships or a lot of horror elements. And a welcoming fandom.

Pretty boys, sci-fi, supernatural (of the cool/magic sort, not really into horror), found family, LGBTQ friendly/accepting, minimal m/f sex/romance/'ship bullshite.

Things where there are a few cracks in the text - stuff that's unexplained, stuff that contradicts other episodes so you have to work to reconcile it, brief allusions to characters' backstories that might effect how they feel about a given event.

I prefer relationships where they're clearly interested in each other but the exact nature of the physicality is undefined. Gives me a lot to work with in fic (spicing it up or writing it as a friendship, or whatever.)

And protagonists who are... definitely on the side of the angels but also flawed in some way. A bit manipulative, perhaps, or they've made some decisions I wouldn't agree with, or some aspect of their life is just a complete mess. When they can be my Blorbo and my Poor Little Meow-Meow.

Two factors:

1. I fall for an OTP.
2. There is a lot of content for that OTP.

These are not even the main factors that determine what fandoms I'm in--they're the only factors. I'd say it's about 70% the former and 30% the latter. I mean, I've been out of content in my current fandom for like three years yet I'm still in it, because I'm still totally obsessed with that particular OTP. Lots of content definitely helps, though. If I start to fall for an OTP but then there is basically zero content for it, the flame may go out before it's had a chance to catch.

I love "chill" types of series ("realistic", friendships, coming of age, found family, slice of life, drama or fantasy+comedy). Heavy on character interaction, too. Worldbuilding through talks, yeahh.
Bonus if there is cute (and/or) "anime" art.
Bonus if there is strong (particularly M/M) ship subtext and I fall for at least one of the characters involved.
Just... Cute.

- Live-action media and/or books, primarily. I'm not a gamer at all, and I respect the art of animation but I don't get hooked into it fannishly very much. Fictional characters only, no RPF.

- Larger-than-life storylines and characterizations. Not really into realistic slice-of-life as a fandom thing. I prefer shows/books with SFF elements. I can enjoy a detective show sometimes if it's far enough removed from reality.

- GOOD DIALOGUE, I honestly think this is often my top priority.

- Give me a world I can immerse myself in, where even the minor characters are intriguing. Setting is very important too.

Been spending so many hours on AO3 recently due to the Markiplier web series fandom and trying to find older fics that have been categorized under RPF (I'm guessing before his web series with fictional characters was a tag, people just put it under RPF because that's where the majority of youtube fics are)
Like despite tags that are clearly there - if I click on them it takes me straight to RPF and holy hell I have never been more grateful for AO3 for putting in the exclude tags option so I can actually dodge the rpf and go straight to what I'm looking for (although then the other problem is that everyone years ago has a variety of tag names for either specific ships or characters - so I'm also trying to keep track with what I have yet to look through).

I feel a little like a fandom archeologist

Sorry, gotta vent....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2022-07-05 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
TL:DR - my fucking work is sucking balls right now and the new Program Manager is a clueless dumbfuck who is pissing me off and the training has gone to hell and WTF IS GOING ON. Plus COVID.

Details! :D

I know there was a vent threat yesterday (and i missed it, *plus* the F!S entry the day before) because of work. But...i just gotta vent about work, omfg.
I work at a domestic violence/sexual violence/trafficking emergency shelter. We are in a tiny town with limited resources, and we do what we can. The shelter/food bank/thrift store is all under one umbrella 'ministry' run by a church/churchy people. Fortunately, there is no religious 'stuff' attached to the help, but the Board and all the admin people are all church-people buddies and cover for each other all the time.

We recently lost our kick-ass Program Manager because she got so sick of the Ex.Dir's utter bullshite. Now we have a new PM who is...completely fucking clueless. She wouldn't do the training with our oldest employee (who knows all the stuff), she doesn't know wtf she's doing, she won't be told, and she's telling the new-hired staff to do stuff the wrong fucking way. Our funding DEPENDS on the right way.

We recently had a full house, and one of the clients came up COVID positive. This was not passed on to any of us. Then two staff were COVID positive. This was also not passed on, until Friday suddenly everyone is being moved to a hotel so they can quarantine and the shelter can be deep cleaned (by us, the staff).

The new PM...said if you're sick, it's okay, you don't have to come in. We 'don't need' 24/7 coverage at the shelter. But we are a 24/7 shelter, and now there are gaps in the monitoring of the crisis fucking hotline and crisis text line, and people calling in crisis and getting NO FUCKING ANSWER. In the past, the hotline number was transferred to the text phone so someone could take it home for 12 hours and monitor calls (and get paid as on shift) so there was ALWAYS SOMEONE answering the phone. She doesn't seem to give a flying fuck. The Ex.Dir is on holiday and definitely doesn't give a fuck, and I spent the weekend (overnight shifts) bleach-cleaning half the fucking shelter and am wondering if anyone else will bother.

The other employee who has been there the longest recently had shoulder surgery and so can't do much, so i'm fine with her not cleaning. But. ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH!!
